La Masia product breaks silence after Barcelona exit – ‘Looking forward to a change of scenery'
Earlier today, FC Barcelona confirmed that promising La Masia midfielder Aleix Garrido has left the club after spending 13 seasons. The 21-year-old prospect was the captain of the Barça Atletic this season but could not help them avoid relegation from the RFEF Primera Division. Advertisement With Garrido's contract expiring on June 30, the youngster, who made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2023 under Xavi Hernandez, decided to move onto a new challenge. As such, having left Barcelona for free, the La Masia product has signed for Eibar in La Liga 2, penning a three-year contract. Aleix Garrido opens up after exit Following his move to Eibar from Barcelona, Garrido has now opened up on what this move means for his career. 'For me, it's a big change because I've been at Barça for many years. It's the end of a chapter and I'm looking forward to a change of scenery and to experience football much more professionally and to wear this shirt,' Garrido said. Continuing, the 21-year-old starlet added: 'The second division is something I haven't played in yet and it motivates me a lot to develop myself as a footballer. Eibar is a perfect place. Advertisement 'I'm happy, I'm happy to join this family. It's going to be a great year and I'm motivated, I'm keen to get out of my comfort zone.' Garrido has struggled with several physical issues over the past two seasons, particularly with a metatarsal injury. As such, he saw his chances of breaking into the first team as extremely limited. In fact, Hansi Flick did not call him up to the first team even once during this campaign, instead turning to younger players like Guille Fernandez, Toni Fernandez, and Unai Hernandez. The 21-year-old prospect, thus, will be hoping to hit the ground running and live up to his potential after joining Eibar.

Official: Barcelona confirm promising midfielder's departure
The departures from Barcelona's reserve team ranks continue as the club have now confirmed that promising midfielder Aleix Garrido has departed after 13 years in the academy. 'Aleix Garrido will not continue at FC Barcelona next season. The 21-year-old player and captain of Barça Atletic is ending a 13-season spell at the Club, from joining as a youth player to making his first-team debut,' the club statement read, Advertisement 'The Club wishes him the best of luck in the future, both personally and professionally.' Garrido, 21, joined the club back in 2012, at the Benjamin C level and rose through the ranks at La Masia, going on to become the Barça Atletic captain this season. The midfielder even made his first-team debut for the Blaugrana during the 2022/23 season under former manager Xavi Hernandez against Elche in La Liga – his only senior appearance. Having missed a good chunk of the season due to injury, Garrido did establish himself as a regular in the team after returning but could not stop Barça Atletic from getting relegated. Now, with his contract expiring on June 30, the 21-year-old has opted to move on from Barcelona and embark on a new journey, with Eibar understood to be his next club.

FC Barcelona Star Wants Contract Terminated

An FC Barcelona star who will return to the club at the end of the month would like his contract to be terminated according to AS, which cited anonymous sources. After an impressive season in Girona's reintroduction to the Spanish top flight, Oriol Romeu started a second stint at his boyhood club Barca in the summer of 2023. It was no secret that the defensive midfielder was way down then-head coach Xavi Hernandez's shortlist, however, with the former number 6 and Camp Nou legend instead preferring the likes of Joshua Kimmich or Martin Zubimendi to replace Sergio Busquets once he headed off to Inter Miami for a reunion with Lionel Messi. At the time, however, Barca's financial hamstrings meant that a pursuit of either man was out of the question, and Xavi instead had to settle for Oriol who cost a few million euros. Unfortunately for the Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012, he wasn't able to replicate his Girona form and even admitted to suffering 'mental issues' derived from the high-pressure demands of donning the iconic Blaugrana shirt. A return to Girona in 2024 was the best solution for all parties, but with the loan that took Romeu back to Montilivi expiring on June 30, the 33-year-old will become a Barca player once more in under a fortnight. With the likes of Marc Casado, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal all above him in the pecking order, Romeu isn't tipped to have prominence under Xavi's successor Hansi Flick amid being unable to replicate his best form at Girona where he suffered knee problems and wasn't always a regular starter. Considering he'll soon have just 12 months left on his contract, it makes little sense to renew Romeu to avoid losing him for free in 2026 given his age and probable lack of suitors. To get a clean slate, Romeu prefers that his terms are terminated according to AS, which would help FC Barcelona get his salary off the books and have more room to operate in terms of Financial Fair Play. If this does come to pass, however, the club will probably have to part with a compensation fee in Romeu's direction.

UEFA Wants To Hit FC Barcelona With $68.5 Million Sanction
European soccer governing body UEFA proposed hitting Spanish giant FC Barcelona with a $68.5 million ... More fine as part of sanctions according to Mundo Deportivo, which cited anonymous sources. European soccer governing body UEFA proposed hitting Spanish giant FC Barcelona with a $68.5 million fine as part of sanctions according to Mundo Deportivo, which cited anonymous sources. Once one of the sport's most monied clubs, Barca has battled financial problems since an economic crisis at the turn of the decade brought on by the pandemic's lack of matchday revenue and overpaying for signings took it to the brink of oblivion. Facing what were set to be four long years without the La Liga title, FC Barcelona and its president Joan Laporta got creative by pulling a series of what Laporta called 'financial levers' in the summer of 2022. This involved operations such as selling 10% of future television broadcasting rights to American investment group Sixth Street for €207.5 million, and then another 15% to the same party for €315 million, in order to raise the funds required to sign the likes of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde. The move proved successful in that then-head coach and midfield legend Xavi Hernandez made Barca Spanish champions once more. Yet while La Liga accepted these financial gymnastics, UEFA did not look on them too kindly and argued that the sales of the television broadcasting rights stakes could not be defined as 'operating income'. That's why Barca was sanctioned by UEFA in 2024 but ended up paying just €500,000 after appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). As explained by Mundo Deportivo, however, the European authority is not satisfied and wants to hit Barca with a hefty sanction of $68.5 million (€60 million). Laporta is relying on his cordial relationship with UEFA president Aleksandr Ceferin to work something out, and he's argued that Barca is not a SAD or 'Public limited sports company' and therefore cannot make capital increases. Furthermore, Barca is allowed to make a sale of assets for a certain period of time in Spain, and La Liga president Javier Tebas validated the levers at the time they were pulled. After Laporta used his charm, UEFA has agreed to reduce the fine from €60 million to €15 million providing the club complies with it and La Liga's FFP rules. Even if the fine is still only €15 million, it is still a hefty blow for a club like FC Barcelona, which is still on the road to recovery. It's not far off the €25 million it needs to raise to pay Joan Garcia's release clause, and could affect pursuits for the likes of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford or Liverpool's Luis Diaz elsewhere.

FC Barcelona Announces Contract Termination And Saves $36.5 Million
FC Barcelona announced the contract recission of a now former first team player through a statement ... More sent to members o the press on Monday afternoon in Catalonia. FC Barcelona announced the contract termination of a now former first team player through a statement sent to members of the press on Monday afternoon in Catalonia. According to Mundo Deportivo, this move will help save Barca a much needed $36.5 million (€32 million) considering the pay that Frenchman was owed for the last two years of his contract. 'FC Barcelona and first team player Clement Lenglet have reached an agreement for the termination of his contract with the Club,' a statement from the Blaugrana began, before thanking the central defender for his 'gratitude' and wishing him 'luck and success in the future'. Lenglet arrived at Barca in 2018 from Sevilla after then-president Josep Bartomeu agreed to pay $40 million (€35 million) for his services. In 2022, however, the 29-year-old became surplus to requirements for head coach Xavi Hernandez at Camp Nou and went to Tottenham Hotspur on loan. The reigning Europa League champions decided not to make his temporary assignment permanent, and nor did Aston Villa after taking him on for the 2023/2024. At Atletico Madrid, however, Lenglet has found his feet and impressed across a campaign where he enjoyed 32 of 34 appearances as a starter. Rescinding his contract is key to Lenglet staying on in the Spanish capital. It of course means that Barca will not receive a penny from Atleti for a player that was still on its books. Yet perhaps most important for Barca, it will not have to pay Lenglet €16 million per season for the last two years of his contract, which could prove important in staying on the right side of Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits when it wants to bring in new players itself. Barca is expected to sign Joan Garcia from Espanyol this week, and will need to activate his €25 million release clause in order for the goalkeeper to cross town to the Pericos' bitter rival. As a consequence, Marc-Andre ter Stegen could be on his way out of the club but SPORT says he is ready to make things difficult and 'go to war' with the La Liga champions. With the likes of Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez and Ronald Araujo all to choose from lest me mention substitutes such as Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen, FC Barcelona coach doesn't need Lenglet. Atletico clearly likes him, however, and he's expected to sign a fresh deal until June 30, 20228 at the Metropolitano.
