BMW X3 Cargo Test: How Big Is the Trunk?
I'm eventually going to talk about the BMW X3 and how much stuff fits in its 31.5-cubic-foot cargo area. But first, I must discuss spare tires. Remember how they used to be in everything? And then remember how a little thing called run-flat tires were invented and automakers started using these supposed modern marvels while removing spares in the name of weight, packaging and, possibly, cost? BMW was an early and extreme adopter of run-flats, much to the chagrin of ride quality enthusiasts and the wallets of owners who needed to replace them. Why am I talking about this? Well, a few years ago, it seems like BMW decided that spare tires were OK after all and started putting them back into its cars, at least as an option. The last-generation X1 and X2 were the earliest two examples I can remember. You could either have a spare tire or a big spare-tire-sized underfloor storage area. (That's the case with the current generations, too.) I'm guessing this move was popular because the X3 eventually got a spare tire option. Unfortunately, the previous-generation X3 was not originally engineered to have one, so to make a spare fit, engineers awkwardly raised the floor, creating a stage-like space. See below.

Major car brand discontinues ‘funky' motor after 10 years with ‘no plans to replace it'
Other models have been highlighted as alternatives END OF THE ROAD Major car brand discontinues 'funky' motor after 10 years with 'no plans to replace it' A MAJOR motor brand has announced it will axe a popular "funky" luxury SUV from its lineup with no plans to replace it. The unique motor is expected to be axed as soon as stock runs out, and will not get a facelift or a model upgrade next year. 2 The BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover, and has four doors, though sometimes referred to as a coupe 2 The larger and more refined second-generation X2 was a big part of the discontinuation of the X4 BMW is scrapping its popular X4 Coupe SUV from its production lineup - and is expected to take it off the market as soon as next year. First revealed in 2014, the SUV quickly became popular with motorheads who love to drive adventure vehicles with a bit of luxury. However, over the decade, the car failed to maintain its position as the leading Coupe SUV, with passionate motorists eventually falling out of love with the vehicle. Due to a lack of popularity, the German brand is expected to stop the production of X4 after the 2024 model year. BMW will reportedly kill the X4 after the 2025 model year. Company officials additionally confirmed the Mercedes GLC Coupe rival won't live to see another generation. But its not all bad news, as BMW still has the new X2 crossover coupe as an alternative. The price gap between the X4 and X2 has also been substantially narrowed. And those who are after a larger, or more stylish SUV can look into getting their hands on the big X6. BMW M135 is a power-packed hot-hatch that's precise, solid & slick… everything about is 'sheer driving pleasure' The German luxury brand says the new X3 can also provide a more in-between sized vehicle, which unlike the X2 has RWD underpinnings and a six cylinder engine. It is not yet known exactly when BMW will end production of the X4. This year has already seen 30 cars on the chopping block, with already 20 more set for next year.

Electric plane maker Heart Aerospace moves to US in blow to Sweden
OSLO, April 30 (Reuters) - Hybrid-electric airplane maker Heart Aerospace will relocate its headquarters and operations to Los Angeles from Sweden's Gothenburg, in a bid to boost its product development in the United States, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. Heart Aerospace is developing a regional electric aircraft capable of carrying 30 passengers, targeting a niche market between smaller battery-powered transport and larger regional turboprops or small jets. "Heart has decided to close its operations in Sweden to enable a bigger scale up of the U.S.-based team," the company said, dealing a blow to Swedish hopes of leading a transition to electric aircraft for regional travel. A total of 75 jobs will go in Sweden as a result, the company said. An experimental prototype known as the X1 is scheduled for its maiden flight this year and will be followed later by the X2, the company said, adding that its customers, partners, and investors were increasingly based in the United States. "By consolidating our operations in Los Angeles, we can accelerate development, strengthen collaboration, and better position Heart Aerospace for the future," co-founder and CEO Anders Forslund said. The company raised $107 million in a funding round in 2024 and recently secured an additional $40 million investment, it added. Former GE Aerospace executive John Slattery, who was appointed Heart's non-executive chairman in 2023, separately said it was the right time for him to step down, although he would remain an investor. "This pivot from Gothenburg is a shift in strategy and in any startup there will be such moves, but I'm pleased with what we achieved over the last couple of years," he told Reuters. The hybrid-electric plane, which will be known as ES-30, will have an all-electric range of 200 km (124 miles), a hybrid engine range of 800 km and a 30-minute charge time, with the aim of certifying the model in 2029, according to Heart's website. Company President Simon Newitt is also stepping down from Heart, a source with knowledge of the matter said.
