Two London restaurants have been named in the 50 best in the world

Every year, the prestigious World's 50 Best holds a ceremony to crown the 50 very best restaurants on the planet. Earlier this month the extended list (from 51 to 100) was revealed, and two London restos featured. Now the top 50 has been unveiled at an awards ceremony in Turin. Now in its 23rd year, the 2025 list comprises eateries from 32 cities and 22 countries, with 10 new entries and four re-entries. In the ranking, two London restaurants were crowned as one of the world's 50 best in 2025. High-end Mexican restaurant Kol came in 49th place. The Michelin-starred spot in Marylebone is known for its impeccable presentation, and for making Mexican dishes with British ingredients. Helmed by ex-Noma and Noma Mexico chef Santiago Lastra, some of Kol's best-renowned dishes include a langoustine taco, and a whole grilled octopus with bone marrow. The other London restaurant to make the list was Ikoyi, coming in 15th place. According to the World's 50 Best, co-founders Jeremy Chan and Iré Hassan-Odukale have 'created a culinary style that defies categorisation'. The swish joint on the Strand blends West African and Asian spices with British vegetables, meat and fish to create a unique blind tasting menu. Stand out dishes include a refined take on jollof rice and the plantain dish, which has taken on different iterations over the years. Founded 16 years ago, Maido features a Japanese-Peruvian fusion menu, and lunchtime diners in the sleek Lima dining room were ecstatic about the win, shouting "Maido, Maido!" "The fusion of flavors at Maido is spectacular," Valentina Mora, 33, told AFP. Restaurants from three continents made the podium of the World's 50 Best, which was launched by a British press group to compete with France's Michelin red guides. Asador Etxebarri -- which offers Basque cooking in Atxondo, Spain -- won second place and Quintonil in Mexico City was third. Maxime Frederic, at the helm of the Cheval Blanc Paris pastry shop and head pastry chef at Plenitude, was named Best Pastry Chef. The 50 Best award has been presented since 2002 by media group William Reed, based on reviews by one thousand "independent experts" such as chefs, specialist journalists and restaurant owners. The list has been criticised above all by French chefs, who accuse it of being clubby and opaque, but it is generally considered to be ahead of the Michelin guide in identifying the latest food trends. Its detractors -- French, but also Japanese and American - launched The List in 2015, a ranking of 1,000 restaurants across the world that uses an algorithm to aggregate and analyse data from more than 400 international sources.

Each year, the World's 50 Best announces a list of the top 50 restaurants on the planet, and for 2025 that will take place at a ceremony in Turin on June 19. But 50? That's hardly very many spots to allocate when there are so many fantastic restaurants out there. Luckily, there's an extended version of the list – 50 restaurants that didn't quite make the final cut, but can very proudly say they're in the top 100 on the planet. Ahead of announcing the official top 50, the guide has just released the 51-100 best restaurants in the world right now. Among the inclusions is La Colombe, a stunning fine-dining institution near Cape Town, nestled in the Silvermist organic wine estate, which overlooks the Constantia Valley. Here you'll find a menu of classy plates influenced by Asian cuisine and created with French techniques. Over in the heart of São Paulo you'll find Tuju, a breezy, contemporary restaurant led by chef Ivan Rolston, where you can indulge in a decadent 10-course menu – which, according to World's 50 Best, 'pays homage to Brazil 's distinct seasons, showcasing locally sourced ingredients through creative techniques.' One of the best bars in Bangkok is popping up in Chicago for one night only

Chicago is already home to some of the best bars in North America, but we'll never turn down the opportunity for an international cocktail stunner to come grace the Windy City. And one of the world's best drinking dens—literally— will do just that next month: on Monday, May 5, Vesper will head to Chicago by way of Bangkok for an epic takeover and collaboration at Hawksmoor Chicago inside the historic LaSalle Powerhouse building in River North. The globally acclaimed Thai bar was recognized as one of the World's 50 Best Bars in 2024 and was featured on Asia's 50 Best Bars list nine years consecutively, coming in at number 13 just last year. "This is pretty much the ideal date bar: it's chic but not austere, the drinks are strong and if conversation runs dry the menu will provide the perfect talking point," the World's 50 Best write-up praised the Bangkok bar, which opened in the city's Silom area back in 2014. Vesper's current cocktail lead Tom Hearn (formerly at the American Bar at the Savoy and KOL Mezcaleria in London) will join forces with Hawksmoor Chicago's Zach Ballard to showcase a specially curated menu of Vesper's wildly inventive cocktails that helped them earn the reputation as one of the most exciting bars on the globe. The open-to-the-public event will run from 6pm to 9pm on May 5. On the menu will be the Beehave (made with gin, lychee liqueur, lychee honey, soda and jasmine); A Samurai Walks into the Sunset (with tequila, Talker 10, Campari, dry vermouth, crème de cacao blanc and shio koji); and the Greenball, a strong spirit-forward drink that makes use of tequila, absinthe, mezcal and sour apple liqueur; as well as the bar's namesake Vesper (Tanqueray gin, Ketel One vodka, Cocchi Americano and orange bitters). Cocktails will be available a la carte, with prices ranging from $12 to $14 per drink.
