Atomic Kitten's Natasha Hamilton reveals skin cancer diagnosis

Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton has revealed she was diagnosed with skin cancer, saying she initially thought it was a "mosquito bite". The 42-year-old said she received the diagnosis last year after feeling an itch on her back following a holiday in Majorca while speaking on Good Morning Britain. She said: "I'd been on holiday, and I wasn't actually in the sun a lot, because my baby was only about five months old, and I was breastfeeding. "And one afternoon I had her on my lap, and my back was in the sun and I burnt, and I don't know whether it was later that day or the next day, I had, like an itchy spot on my back, and I just thought it was a mosquito bite. "Didn't think nothing, you don't get to look at your back very often, do you? It's tucked away. "I felt it and went, 'oh, mosquito bite', it wasn't until maybe four weeks later, when I was at home and it was itching, and I was like, hang on a minute that seems a bit long for a mosquito bite. "I asked my husband to have a look, and he went, 'oh, that's not a bite', and he took the picture, and when I looked at it, I went, 'okay, I think I know what that is'. "Originally it had just been a dark freckle that I'd had on my back for many years, it wasn't raised, it wasn't a mole, it was just a freckle." Hamilton went on to say she was later diagnosed with a "basal-cell carcinoma", and added that she thought her use of sunbeds during her early days in the girl group in the late 1990s and early 2000s could have contributed. She added: "People of my age will probably feel the same, or remember, if you were going on a night out you used a sunbed because you wanted that sunkissed look to make yourself feel good and give you a bit of confidence. "If I was going to do something like Top Of The Pops or a big TV show, I'd want my look sunkissed, so we would go to the sunbeds. "There was a sunbed shop based in the hotel that we stayed in all the time in London, and I'd use tan accelerators, and I can honestly say I don't think there was ever a time when I went on a sunbed that I didn't burn. "Looking back now, because I'm type one skin anyway, I'm not supposed to be in such intense sun." Hamilton's mother Maria was diagnosed with the same type of cancer after Hamilton noticed a mark on her face, and urged her to get it checked. She said her mother was initially told by doctors that the patch of skin was "nothing", before she urged her to ask to be referred to a dermatologist a year later, who told her it was skin cancer "straight away", before arranging for her to have them removed. Speaking in 2022, the singer, who has four children, said she had changed her lifestyle to lower the risk of increasing her chances of skin cancer following her mother's diagnosis. As part of Atomic Kitten alongside Kerry Katona and Liz McClarnon, before Katona was later replaced by Jenny Frost, Hamilton scored 13 UK top 10 singles and four UK top 10 albums – they are best known for the songs Whole Again and Eternal Flame.

Atomic Kitten star Natasha Hamilton, 42, mistook skin cancer for mosquito bite

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Natasha Hamilton has admitted she initially dismissed skin cancer as a mosquito bite. The 42-year-old Atomic Kitten singer, who recently revealed she was diagnosed with skin cancer last year, recalled getting an itch on her back after soaking up the sun on holiday in Majorca. She assumed she had simply been bitten by a mosquito, but eventually asked her husband to take a look after it didn't go away. Natasha went to get medical advice and got her diagnosis, before having aBasal-cell carcinoma removed. The Whole Again singer, who is now 'cancer-free', told Good Morning Britain on Friday: 'I'd been on holiday, and I wasn't actually in the sun a lot because my baby was only about five months old and I was breast feeding. 'One afternoon, I had her on my lap and my back was in the sun, and it burnt. I don't know whether it was later that day or the next day, I had an itchy spot on my back. 'I just thought it was a mosquito bite, didn't think anything of it, I felt it and went, 'Oh, mosquito bite!' It wasn't until maybe four weeks later when I was at home and it was itching, and I was like, 'Hang on a minute, that seems a bit long for a mosquito bite.' ' Common symptoms of skin cancer include a sore or area of skin that: Doesn't heal within 4 weeks Looks unusual Hurts, is itchy, bleeds, crusts or scabs for more than four weeks Keep an eye out for changes in moles, ulcers and freckles, and report new lumps or red patches of skin to your doctor. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The main treatment for skin cancer is surgery and the good news is, it's unusually minor with a high survival rate. But like all cancers, early detection is key. More invasive treatments including radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be needed depending on the type of cancer and if it has spread. She asked her husband to look and take a photo, and Natasha immediately realised the mole wasn't what she'd thought. 'When I looked at it I went, OK, I think I know what that is,' she said. 'Originally, it had just been a dark freckle that I've had on my back for many years. It wasn't raised, it wasn't a mole, it was just a freckle.' Although it's not been confirmed, Natasha thinks the skin cancer may have stemmed from her using sunbeds a lot in the 1990s. 'I have burnt my back so much over the years, and I used sunbeds when I was younger, you know, back in the 90s,' she told Scott McGlynn's Celebrity Skin Talk. 'It was like everyone used a sunbed before you went on your night out on a Saturday, and the repercussions of that is now I have to be super vigilant in the sun, like I need to have my high factors on.' And although she's now cancer-free and feeling 'fine', she admitted the health scare has given her pause for thought. More Trending 'It was found, it was cut away and, yeah, we move on. But it was a, kind of, 'Oh, I'm not invincible' moment,' she said. 'These things do happen to you sometimes, and you've just got to look after yourself.' Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon, 44, pregnant with first child

Liz McClarnon has admitted she is 'petrified' ahead of welcoming her first child after having two miscarriages. As a teenager Liz joined the girl group Atomic Kitten alongside Kerry Katona and Natasha Hamilton. The group – who later had Jenny Frost join after Kerry left – scored three number-one hits – Whole Again, Eternal Flame, and The Tide Is High – plus two number-one albums. However last year Liz was left as the only member of Atomic Kitten after the other two quit. A year on Liz has revealed some exciting news in her private life. Earlier this month the 44-year-old admitted she'd 'been keeping a secret'. 'I've mostly kept myself off social media because sometimes it was hard to smile. But after years of sometimes quite painful IVF quite dark times…I'm pregnant,' she captioned a video, which showed her sitting in a park cradling her bump. 'I started to record a video of me just telling you but I got too emotional, so I thought I'd just hide behind this little announcement instead. I just can't believe we're here,' she continued. 'So many have been through exactly what I went through and worse. ❤️ I want to share what I can and add my voice and ears to those who already help others understand or deal with all that comes with IVF and loss after so much hope. I've been a part of some beautifully supportive communities. I'm so grateful.' The singer is expecting her first child with husband Peter Cho, a doctor she met on a dating app during the pandemic. Four months later they moved in together and four months after that the couple were engaged. Early in their relationship they began the IVF process as both wanted children and were aware her being 40 might delay the natural process. However, in 2022 they had three failed embryo transfers, and last year she suffered two miscarriages after the first successful cycles. In an interview with The Mirror, Liz said she decided to share her fertility struggles following 'dark times'. 'The whole process made me truly appreciate that having a baby is a miracle,' she said. 'When it doesn't work, you're just in shock. 'I felt so bad emotionally, it was really tough.' But Liz said she was now 'loving life' and was excited to find out the sex of her baby. She did joke about her nerves though too. 'My knees already hurt. Don't get me wrong, I'm so grateful, but I'm also petrified. But you know what? It's happened to women older than me before, and it'll happen again – so we'll just get on with it!,' she said. When sharing her pregnancy publicly, Liz was flooded with many messages of support – including from her former bandmates. 'Literally couldn't be any happier for you both! After all you've been through, this little miracle is everything,' Natasha wrote. 'The best news ever …. You have been through it girl but never lost faith in what you knew was meant to be 🤍 Beyond happy for you both,' Jenny added. More Trending Liz and Peter married in 2023, but she only revealed his identity to her followers when they celebrated their first wedding anniversary last year. After sharing photos with her husband's face covered by confetti soon after their wedding, she paid tribute to Peter a year later. Sharing a photo of them together, she wrote: 'Guess what?! I've been married to my perfect match for a whole year, I love you Peter Cho!' Got a story?
