The Waterfront – Season 1 Episode 1 'Almost Okay' Recap & Review

Almost Okay Episode 1 of The Waterfront begins with a couple of fisherman, Curtis and Troy, smuggling drugs. It's dark, misty, and the perfect place for an ambush. Several goons show up, steal their gear and wrap them in a net, throwing them overboard. This ends up being big news as their boat, Miss Glory, washes up on shore. The hull has been completely cleared out and the authorities are swarming all over this. The boat is registered to Cane Buckley, a prominent business owner around these parts who owns the fishery. They're a big family in town that everybody knows, so naturally it's the first port of call for the DEA. One of the more prominent agents here is a guy called Marcus Sanchez. More on him shortly! Cane Buckley has a nice house and a good family. He has a little girl called Savannah and a loving wife called Peyton. However, his money is not entirely clean. Having heard about the earlier boat, he rushes to get the date of registration changed on the official documents, erasing his own involvement in ownership. Things are estranged between Cane and his father, Harlan, who isn't in the best state. He has heart issues, he's having affairs behind his wife Bella's back (although she seems to know and not care much) and he's drinking heavily. Harlan has run the fishery into the ground and when things went off the rails a while back, he dumped the business – and all its financial woes – in Cane's lap. Marcus shows up asking questions though, but Cane lies and claims Curtis bought the boat from him a few months back. Harlan catches wind of what's happening and shows up at the office, punching Cane in the face. It turns out Cane has been mixed up with drug runners, although he shrugs it off and claims they've only run the drugs three times in total. Cane is working with a man named Hoyt Piper, but he's only a small-bit player that answers to someone called Owen. Cane was determined to try and run down their debt and thought smuggling drugs was the easiest way to get ahead. The haul was upwards of about $10 million, and Hoyt was the one setting the meetings up, so Cane is very much in the dark here. He has no idea who he's really working for. Harlan is not happy, and speaks to Belle that night about what's been going on. She admits to being aware of Cane's issues, given he came to her 6 months back for help. It was only supposed to be a couple of easy runs to get afloat but that's clearly escalated in a big way now. While Harlan was too busy getting blind drunk and sleeping around, Belle was working with Cane to try and save the business. This seemed like the only viable option. Harlan though is ready to take the reigns of this business again, and demands Hoyt come and see him so they can strike up a deal. They're joined by ex-offenders Tim and Reggie, who work at the fish house and are the only other ones who know about this drug operation. Harlan believes Hoyt is the one behind Curtis and Troy being killed. After dumping some Chum in the water, they drop Hoyt down so the sharks can force him into submission. Well, it works and he admits the drugs are locked in a shed in the middle of the woods. Harlan finds the drugs… but so too does Clyde Porter, the local sheriff. He and Harlan go way back and we've seen them friendly with each other across the season. Unfortunately, he shoots Hoyt dead and reveals that he's the one in charge here. He is Owen. The Buckley family now owe Clyde Porter and he has them right where he wants them. The pair deal with Hoyt's body, dumping him in a swamp full of alligators, before working out how to play this next. It's a stressful ordeal for Cane, who finds his whole life crumbling around him. The one bright spot though comes from an old flame back in town, Jenna. She's married, just like Cane is, but the pair have clear chemistry together. Everybody knows it, and it seems the pair are lying to themselves over what they could have been. Cane has been following Jenna's writing online for a while and even heads over to hers and propositions her, in a roundabout way. She shoots him down, but it's clear this isn't the end of things. As the episode closes out, Bree heads to a seedy motel in town, where Marcus Sanchez opens the door and invites her in. Is she working with the feds? The Episode Review The Waterfront gets things off to a decent start with its opening episode, combining elements of Ozark, Bloodlines and Outer Range, into this soapy crime drama. The estranged family clearly have a lot of demons to iron out and the episode does a good job of introducing everybody and quickly establishing their ties. Cane and Harlan are the lifeblood of this family and you can already see that these two and their bond is going to be the driving force of the show. Along with that, we've also got the situation involving Bree, who appears to be working with the DEA to take down her own family. We know she has an estranged relationship with her son but we don't know how or why. That, of course, pales compared to the drama involving Porter, and the nice little twist that Clyde is actually the big boss. Whether there's someone else higher up the food chain though remains to be seen. So far though, this looks like it could be quite the intriguing watch. The Waterfront – Season 1 Episode 6 'Hunting Season' Recap & Review

Hunting Season Episode 6 of The Waterfront starts with horrific flashes to the past for Bree. She soon awakens, with Cane next to her. She's now sober but clearing heroin out of her system isn't exactly smooth sailing. However, Bree has serious guilt over how this has gone down with Marcus. Cane reminds her that Marcus is a former addict and the allure of doing heroin was just too much for him to turn away from. It's not her fault he's dead. Cane believes they need to cover their tracks, which involves destroying all the evidence that Marcus has gained. It's here where Bree points out a horrifying moment from the past about her grandfather's death that's shaped her whole life. The man didn't die peacefully in his sleep after all. He was tortured while Bree was hiding inside the closet, watching the whole thing play out in horror. This entire incident explains why she has substance abuse issues and what led her down this path. Belle made her promise not to say anything and she didn't. With the pair busy, Harlan finds Grady waiting in his office. He's brought over some payroll (and a little extra to sweeten the deal) and wants to celebrate their little win with the DEA. However, Grady also has an emergency shipment he wants to fly out asap. Harlan is having none of it and doesn't want to mess with their business. Grady is not letting this one go and reminds him who's in charge here. With Harlan refusing to play ball, and needing to prove his point, Grady shows to see Diller and they hang together. He facetimes with Harlan and shows they're off hunting together, which obviously is his way of keeping Harlan in check. While Harlan races off to get Diller back, he eventually concedes and agrees to go hunting with the pair. Elsewhere, Belle signs for some documents from the bank, which only confirms they're in even more trouble than she initially thought. It seems Wes is trying to strongarm them and Belle meets with him to discuss it further. However, the ship has sailed and they have limited time to pay up. Back hunting, things take a horrible turn when Grady, in his desire to try and hunt some birds, ends up shooting Diller. Whether an accident or a warning, news of Diller's shooting reaches the whole family. Cane rings Jenna that night, just to talk, despite initially saying they weren't going to. Their conversation stirs up old feelings, which is only compounded further by his earlier chat with Bree, and he heads over to see her. No more 'mr good guy'; the pair wind up having sex. At the same time, Belle shows up to see Harlan, showing off the documents from the bank that mean bad news for their business. Even worse, Belle immediately susses that Bree has been using and it just makes Cane feel worse that he's caught in the middle of this. He apologizes for how everything has gone down, and the pair share a sweet moment together. When Grady shows up at the hospital, everything kicks off again. Grady speaks to Belle about the shooting, claiming that he didn't intentionally shoot him but subconsciously? Well, he's not 100% sure. Belle smacks the guy in the face, and as his goons grab her, Shawn – of all people – shows up and saves her before security arrive. Shawn speaks to Belle privately after, wanting to know what she's mixed up in. Naturally, she doesn't tell him but that's not going to stop his questions. Meanwhile, Harlan looks over the documents in his office that night. Unfortunately, after the altercation with Grady at the hospital, he shows up with his men and strong-arms Harlan into submission. To prove his point, he grabs a couple of buckets full of Portuguese man o' war, and place them on his bare chest. Harlan's screams ring out across the warehouse. The Episode Review Grady shows his true colours here, as the nice guy facade wears off and he shows just how vicious he can be. The torture with the jellyfish is pretty sadistic, and it's clear that the hunting trip shooting 'accident' was Grady's way of sending a message to Harlan. Cane and Bree patching up their differences though is a nice touch and one of the highlights of the episode for sure, while Cane predictably succumbs to temptation and sleeps with Jenna. Whether this is going to blow up when Peyton returns though is anyone's guess, but it's clear that this situation is far from over. With a couple of episodes left, will Harlan and Cane manage to save the business before it's too late? Previous Episode Next Episode Expect A Full Season Write-Up When This Season Concludes!

The Waterfront – Season 1 Episode 2 'Taking Control' Recap & Review

Taking Control Episode 2 of The Waterfront begins with authorities finding Curtis and Troy's bodies in the water. While the authorities chalk this up to a freak accident – including the DEA agents in the area – Clyde takes Cane and Harlan aside to talk about their next run. Even with the DEA still in town, things are hot and the Buckleys want to wait before running more drugs. Unfortunately, Porter isn't taking no for an answer and they don't have much of a choice but to go ahead as scheduled. Speaking to Belle about their financial issues, Harlan learns they're four months behind on both mortgages and two months behind on the loan. They really are up shit's creek given their debts amount to about 6.8 million. Willis at National has given them a three-month extension to prevent them defaulting, but they need to find about $2 million to keep afloat. Harlan though believes they can make it work by cutting Porter out of this and going right to the source. Harlan wants to negotiate with the buyer and have their own supply line. Belle though, has another idea. She wants to partner with a developer called Wes Larsen to expand and invest in building out the beachfront. This would eventually solve all their financial issues, but Harlan is adamant that the land isn't to be worked on. As we soon find out, Belle has already gone ahead with this and spoken to Wes in private behind her husband's back. An ongoing issue here stems from Bree, who works in the restaurant. She has an estranged relationship with her son, Diller, and Harlan wants to help try and patch things up between them. That's difficult to do given there's a restraining order in place for her, but Diller is offered a job working at the fish shop. Bree has been hitting the booze hard and has been in and out of rehab, where she met Marcus, the DEA agent. He's also an ex addict so the pair have a lot in common. It seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it? Bree meets with Marcus at a motel and after destroying the dresser together in a fit of passion, they talk about the case. Marcus doesn't see this going anywhere but Bree is adamant they're onto something. She wants to expose and get Cane out the business, whom she has a grudge with. She's okay with Belle and Harlan though, but the reason for her resentment toward her brother is still unclear. Bree breaks into Cane's office while he's out doing his drug run, intending to take incriminating documents or evidence of wrongdoing. This includes the deed for the boat changing hands. Harlan and Cane work together to do their drug run, unaware of what's going on back at shore. Harlan is taking absolutely no chances though, handing over guns and deciding they need to be ready. Unfortunately, they're ten kilos under the scheduled weight and things look set to kick off. That is, until Cane convinces them to ring Owen and smooth things over. Instead of ringing Porter though, they call a guy called Grady, and he allows them to leave unharmed. It seems like he's the one who's really pulling the strings here. We soon learn that this definitely was a stick-up, and when Harlan finds out, he's pissed. He confronts Porter about it and smacks him across the mouth. Sporting a bloodied mouth, he admits he likes to see the Buckleys struggling like this and talks a big game. That is, until Harlan mentions Grady's name. Harlan wants to meet with him and refuses to do more runs with Porter until he organizes this. That night, Cane meets with Jenna ready for dinner with their partners. Both are nervous and decide to do some shots and eat a gummy to loosen up. Unfortunately, they loosen a bit too much, making things super uncomfortable for their prospective partners. Less uncomfortable though is the meeting with West and Belle. They wind up kissing outside in a it of passion as the development deal looks set to go ahead. When Belle heads back inside, composing herself, she finds Shawn, the new bartender, in a heated conversation with someone on the phone. Belle has been suspicious of him all episode, given he's new in town and clearly doesn't know how to pour drinks properly. His CV also has glaring holes too. When Belle confronts him about this, she demands answers. Well, it turns out Shawn is actually the estranged son of Harlan. That night, Harlan and Cane hash out their issues together. While Harlan sees his son as a fool for running his mouth, Cane believes honesty, or at least honour among thieves, is their best policy. The pair clearly don't see eye to eye and their chat doesn't go well, especially when Cane admits he's glad he's not like his pa. As the episode closes out, Bree shows up to see Marcus and hands over the USB drive that has evidence of wrongdoing from her brother. At the same time, Peyton is approached by a couple of masked figures who douse her in gasoline with a trail heading off to the road and they light a match. The Episode Review Alas, the plot thickens! It's clear now that Grady is the one in charge and it could well be his men that have shown up and threatened Peyton. It's a harsh reminder of who's in charge and Harlan is right in one respect – being a snitch in this line of work is going to end badly. The drama involving the family is starting to get interesting though, with Belle's ties with Wes, Bree's relationship with Marcus and the ongoing sexual tension between Jenna and Cane, looking set to cause big drama going forward and completely implode the family dynamics. Everything here is set up on a precarious knife-edge – roll on the next episode! Previous Episode Next Episode Expect A Full Season Write-Up When This Season Concludes!
