Newport engineer wins STEM Ambassador of the Year award

Stephanie Lewis has been named ICE Wales Cymru STEM ambassador of the year in recognition of her dedication to promoting careers in civil engineering. Ms Lewis, a senior engineer and STEM lead at WSP in Cardiff, was praised by the Institution of Civil Engineers for her commitment to outreach and innovation in engaging young people. She said: "Fifteen years ago, passionate STEM ambassadors sparked my civil engineering journey. "Now, as the ICE Wales Cymru STEM ambassador of the year, I truly appreciate the impact of this role; inspiring future generations, fostering innovation, promoting education, and championing inclusivity, all while sharing our industry's passion and shaping its future." Ms Lewis first became interested in civil engineering after being inspired by a STEM ambassador during her own education. Judges commended her for developing a cohort of STEM ambassadors within WSP and for creating a new workshop to support the programme. The judging panel said: 'Stephanie Lewis provided an exemplary submission where she detailed all the work she has put into STEM outreach as a STEM ambassador plus how she's promoted the programme within WSP. "She has maintained meetings with the STEM ambassador delivery partner, and it has been an absolute pleasure to provide guidance where needed. 'Stephanie demonstrated innovative methods to provide high quality engagement, and by creating a STEM ambassador cohort within WSP alongside developing a workshop is why Stephanie's submission stood out. "It showcased how she had not only considered her impact on current engagement but how she has left a legacy. "There were some incredible nominations however we feel that Stephanie is a very worthy winner of this award.' ICE Wales Cymru regional director Keith Jones said: 'It is great to see Stephanie's success in attracting potential future civil engineers in Wales to have a rewarding career within an industry that plays in a crucial role within society creating a resilient infrastructure that keeps our communities running and contribute to a more sustainable world.'

Austin, Texas, tests autonomous transit bus

The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Austin, Texas, conducted a demonstration in May of the first automated 40-foot electric transit bus in North America. The retrofitted bus successfully maneuvered through the authority's North Operations and Maintenance Facility, reacting appropriately to unexpected obstacles, according to engineering services company WSP. WSP conducted the demonstration to evaluate the operational benefits of autonomous buses, such as more effective use of bus yard capacity. Automated bus depot operations could help cut costs for zero-emission fleets, WSP said. CapMetro had planned to fully electrify its transit bus fleet by 2035, but it has encountered setbacks including the bankruptcy of one of its bus suppliers, reliability and range issues and charging capacity at its main bus depot. Automated bus depot operations could help cut costs for zero-emission fleets, WSP said. The technology could increase existing bus yard capacity up to 90% while also improving safety for drivers, mechanics and other workers, according to a WSP news release. The demonstration bus meets SAE Level 4 driving automation standards, which do not require a human driver but are limited to specific service areas. During the demonstration, the bus had to park with great precision. 'The most complex maneuver sent the autonomous bus to drive and park underneath an overhead pantograph charging dispenser – within just five to seven centimeters of accuracy – and initiate a charging session, all without anyone behind the steering wheel,' Severin Skolrud, vice president, critical and emerging technology, national transit and rail at WSP in the U.S., said in a statement. Possible next steps for the CapMetro program include adding three battery-electric buses to the system on a multiyear deployment, according to WSP. New automated dispatch software could remotely start and precondition the buses and send them to a designated area where operators could perform their pre-trip inspections. Similar projects and studies are underway in Europe. One project in Sweden with software engineering firm Unikie and Nordic public transportation company Nobina will look into the impacts of automated bus depots on work organization and safety routines. Volvo Buses also is developing and testing autonomous technology; it says it sees bus depots as providing the most initial potential for automation. Prince Contracting JV and Florida DOT partner on $933m infrastructure project

A joint venture (JV) comprising FlatironDragados subsidiary Prince Contracting, construction company OHLA USA and designer WSP has partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for an infrastructure project in Broward County. The project involving planning and design is valued at an estimated $933m. It aims to widen the I-95 and enhance the SW 10th Street and Hillsboro Boulevard interchanges, improving safety and connectivity for the region. The approximately four-mile-long initiative will see the introduction of reconfigured interchanges, new flyover ramps, and improved entrance and exit ramps. These enhancements are designed to promote traffic flow, bolster safety, and strengthen emergency evacuation routes. Prince Contracting has earlier carried out infrastructure projects in Florida and Georgia. These include around 17 miles of the I-95 corridor in District 4 since 2015, with the most recent completion being the Segment 3B-2 Diverging Diamond design-build at Glades Road in Broward County, a $148m project. Other projects include the I-75 and Fruitville Road Interchange design-build ($177m), Orlando International Airport Terminal C ($121m), SR 25/Okeechobee Road and SR 826/Palmetto Expressway interchange ($254m), and Central Polk Parkway from SR 570 to US 17 ($257m). Prince Contracting president Jack Calandros said: 'The phased design-build method fosters collaboration between the contractors, client and designer, which drives greater innovation. 'Further, this alignment will provide greater cost and schedule certainty through effective risk management. Our team is committed to engaging local subcontractors and suppliers to accelerate efficient project delivery.' Based in Tampa, Florida, and operational for more than four decades, Prince Contracting self-performs around 80% of its work. It focuses on transportation projects throughout Florida and the Southeast. 'Three-year journey': Train station back on track as BUILD projects advance

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Heritage Johnstown has finally outlined a plan for using the more than $11 million it was awarded in U.S. Department of Transportation Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant money to refurbish the Johnstown Train Station. The goal is to restore the structure, located at 47 Walnut St. downtown, to its original 1916 appearance while adhering to modern Americans with Disabilities Act and environmental standards. Dan Solomon, chairman of Heritage Johnstown, said the final idea was developed after meeting with Jennie Louwerse, the transportation business line leader for WSP, an engineering firm brought on by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to help with the project. Together, the organizations 'simplified the scope,' according to Solomon. Environmental engineering still needs to be done. But afterward, Phase One will consist of fully restoring the grand concourse and ticket office section, completing exterior restoration and ensuring structural stability for the second floor and baggage area. That part of the work is expected to cost approximately $7.2 million and be completed between November 2026 and April 2027, depending on when Amtrak builds a new platform as part of a separate project. The second phase will involve installing an elevator, restoring the second floor and improving the baggage area. Solomon expects Phase Two to last into late 2028. 'It's really a three-year journey,' Solomon said. Johnstown Train Station Johnstown Train Station on Walnut Street in downtown Johnstown on Thursday, June 12, 2025. 'Reinvigorate the core' Three local entities were awarded nearly $24.5 million combined in grants through the then-RAISE, now known as Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD), program in 2021. The City of Johnstown received $8 million for a Main Street corridor redevelopment project. Cambria County Transit Authority got almost $880,000 for repairs to the Johnstown Inclined Plane and $3.6 million for upgrades to the Transit Center on Main Street. All of the money must be used for the specified transportation initiatives and cannot be directed elsewhere. The projects also 'have to be in lockstep,' regarding environmental studies and other plans, according to Johnstown City Manager Art Martynuska. Johnstown City Council has not picked a final Main Street design yet, but the idea is to add modern lighting, arts spaces, new sidewalks and safety features. Work on the rest of the corridor is expected to start after renovations are done to Central Park using a separate pool of American Rescue Plan Act federal dollars. It will be the first major redesign of Main Street since the years after the 1977 Flood. 'I think the last time we looked at anything was in the late '70s, early '80s,' Martynuska said. 'That's obviously when there was federal revenue sharing and some other things that happened, Main Street East (Parking Garage), so on and so forth. It's to reinvigorate the core of the city and hopefully move forward from there.' The Inclined Plane money will be used to 'replace three wayfinding signs and to improve the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp used to access the pedestrian overpass/crosswalk over the Johnstown Expressway (PA‐56),' according to the project description from 2023. Meanwhile, 'the CamTran Downtown Transit Center will be upgraded with a dedicated bus lane in front of the center, along with passenger facility upgrades including an enhanced passenger waiting area, advanced passenger information systems, pedestrian/cyclist accessibility improvements to and around the station,' per information provided by the transit authority. All BUILD, formerly RAISE, funds must be expended by Sept. 30, 2029.
