From hostel canteen to tea stall: Plane crash leaves trail of death in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: As all but one passenger of the ill-fated flight are now believed to have perished in the unfortunate accident on Thursday, a number of lives have been lost in the BJ Medical College hostel premises where the plane struck, killing several junior doctors as well as other non-medical individuals. While initially the number of casualties among students in the hostel was pegged at 10, it is now expected to rise significantly, though no official statement has been issued so far. At the time the plane crashed into the hostel canteen, it is believed that as many as 300 doctors were present within the premises. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like บ้านขนาดเล็กพร้อมห้องน้ำ ที่น่าสนใจในปี 2025 Visionary Echo อ่านเพิ่มเติม Undo People beyond the canteen have also lost their lives along with the doctors. Girish Patni , an auto driver, lost his son Akash, who was at a nearby tea stall when the fire from the crash engulfed the area. While Patni's wife sustained burn injuries in her attempt to save their son, two other bystanders drinking tea at the stall were also killed. Meanwhile, harrowing tales of survival are trickling out from the junior doctors. British More , a medical student and resident of the hostel, had just walked out after finishing his lunch when the plane struck. Live Events Speaking to local media later, he recounted that the sound of the crash was deafening, and before the cause of the noise could be identified, the hostel premises were filled with dust, making breathing difficult. "Later, even visibility was gone," More recounted, adding that soon debris from the building started falling around them, and by the time they got out, they realised that even the wall of the building had collapsed. The London-bound Air India Dreamliner Boeing 787 had crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon at 1.38 pm. 'I'd be the biggest fool if ... ': Olympian Deepika Kumari on criticism, her legacy, and more

Deepika Kumari (Photo by) NEW DELHI: If archery is where calm meets chaos in the span of a heartbeat, then Deepika Kumari has long been India's most trusted arrow. Last month in Shanghai, she proved once again that her aim is far from fading. "Getting my hands on the medal — I see this as an improvement," Deepika tells after clinching her 18th individual World Cup medal at the Stage 2 event. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The knockout rounds brought familiar foes, with Deepika stumbling in the semifinal against Olympic champion Lim Sihyeon. But she didn't stay down for long, returning to outshoot former world champion Kang Chaeyoung 7-3 to secure bronze. HUNGER FOR AN OLYMPIC MEDAL "I feel very proud. I think I've contributed something to Indian archery. People say, 'Because of you, archery became known.' But until I win an Olympic medal, I won't feel I've truly proven myself," said the four-time Olympian. Deepika's participation in four Olympics has seen her reach the quarterfinals in both the Tokyo and Paris editions — her best individual finishes at the Games to date. Heartbreaks, needless to say, have often been her companion on the sport's biggest stages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like nhà container: Xu hướng nhà ở hiện đại và bền vững 2025 Visionary Echo Tìm Ngay Undo The Olympic dream, however, is not a closed chapter. "Dealing with Olympic heartbreak in Paris? I dealt with it the next day. I just moved on, thinking the next time I play in the Olympics, I'll definitely win a medal," she says, eyes set on LA 2028. 'I'D BE THE BIGGEST FOOL IF...' The pressure doesn't end at the archery range; off the field, backlash often follows — fuelled by a nation's Olympic hopes that sometimes tip into harsh judgment. Deepika, in a world of instant opinions, has learned to filter out the static: "Why give answers to those who don't know anything? If someone doesn't know me, hasn't seen me struggle, why bother reacting? If someone doesn't even know me and I carry their opinion around, I'd be the biggest fool. Deepika Kumari of India (Photo by Dean Alberga/Handout/World Archery Federation via Getty Images ) 'They say, 'You're just standing and shooting.' I tell them: you try standing for eight hours. Now add pulling 22 kilos of force, 350–400 times a day. In 45°C heat. Then tell me it's just standing and shooting.' The bow itself weighs 3.5 to 4 kg, and the demands aren't just muscular. As the veteran adds, 'You can't rely only on body strength. You need the control of mind while drawing the bow — it must be balanced. Without proper training, kids today are injuring themselves trying to lift too much, too fast. We used to believe rest wasn't part of training. Now I know how important rest is.' NEW COACH, NEWER MOTIVATION With a new coach, Olympian Rahul Banerjee , and support from the Reliance Foundation, Deepika is now rewiring from the ground up. Yes, even a veteran sometimes needs to go back to the basics, and Deepika is currently doing just that. Recalling her early academy days, Deepika continues, "In India, we're constantly compared to Koreans, who've had a structured system from childhood. But in our country, expectations are high, and patience is lacking. "Like when I went to an academy, I was told, 'If you don't perform within the next six months, you'll be removed.' So it's the same everywhere — limited time, less funding. They expect performance instantly. "Then players forget to build the base as they are forced into bettering their performance. In India, there's still a lack of knowledge at the grassroots, especially about the basics. So I'm focusing on rebuilding my base from scratch." For many, just affording the sport is a mountain, as post-pandemic inflation has hit archery gear hard. "After COVID, equipment costs have gone up a lot. A good archery set-up can cost around 5.5 lakh INR (approx. $6500). You can get basic equipment for 2 to 2.5 lakh, but those will not be of international standard," she reveals. All eyes on the LA 2028 Olympics While the LA 2028 Olympics might still be a few chapters away, Deepika is excited about the introduction of compound archery — a discipline where Indian archers have excelled over the years. "If medal chances increase, our country benefits," she adds. In recurve, it's all manual. Even a small mistake can cost a lot. In compound, the trigger helps." Nevertheless, before LA, Deepika's focus is on the remaining World Cups, the national trials, and the Asian Games next year. "My coach and I have been trying a new approach. We're blending his experience with my style. I want to become the senior world champion," she sighs.

ED arrests ‘mastermind' in multi-crore Goa land scam

Panaji: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested Rohan Harmalkar in connection with an alleged land scam in Goa. Harmalkar contested the state assembly polls in 2022 from the Cumbharjua constituency as an independent candidate. The ED issued five summonses to alleged mastermind Harmalkar to appear before it and join the investigation. He appeared before the ED on Tuesday and joined the investigation, but was arrested as he failed to cooperate. He was subsequently produced before a special court in Panaji and remanded in 14 days of ED custody. In April, the ED searched Harmalkar's office and residences in connection with an alleged land scam, and seized documents pertaining to immovable properties worth over Rs 600 crore. The operation also uncovered incriminating documents of properties — the current market value of which exceeds Rs 1,000 crore — including forged title deeds, indicating manipulation of land records and fraudulent transfers of high-value land parcels spanning several lakhs of square metres in places like Anjuna, Arpora and Assagao. On April 24, the ED registered a case against Harmalkar under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like تعرف على ما يؤثر على أسعار السيارات المستعملة وكيفية الاختيار بحكمة Visionary Echo ابحث الآن Undo Goa police also registered an FIR against him in connection with an alleged land grab case at Anjuna. The ED said the searches were conducted based on intelligence and subsequent financial investigation, which revealed that Harmalkar is a mastermind and the he, along with other associates, resorted to a large-scale conspiracy to illegally appropriate land belonging to rightful owners through fraudulent means, including impersonation, creation of fake documents, and tampering with revenue records. During the search, the ED also found that proceeds generated from the crime were laundered through various individuals and benami entities and finally invested in real estate, luxury vehicles, and other high-value assets. The ED said that the investigation is ongoing to trace the money trail, identify other beneficiaries, and the roles of other persons — including govt officials — connected with illegal property transactions.

Karnataka high court asserts allowances part of salary, raises relief for techie's kin to Rs 2.3 cr

Bengaluru: The high court has increased compensation by Rs 1.5 crore in an accident case, noting that allowances were integral to the deceased software professional's pay package. The family of Santhosh Kumar Singh will now receive Rs 2.3 crore, plus 6% interest, up from the initial Rs 81.9 lakh awarded by a Bengaluru tribunal. The accident occurred on Jan 29, 2019, when Singh was riding his scooter in Electronics City. A speeding water tanker from the opposite direction collided with his vehicle, causing his fatal injuries. His family, including his wife, minor son, and parents, approached the tribunal seeking Rs 3 crore in compensation, stating his monthly income was Rs 1.4 lakh. The insurance company contested it, claiming the deceased man had been responsible for the accident. On Nov 2, 2023, the tribunal granted Rs 81.9 lakh in compensation, confirming the water tanker driver's negligence caused the accident. However, it calculated the compensation based on Sigh's Rs 40,000 monthly income, excluding allowances, citing his probationary status. Both Reliance General Insurance Company and the deceased's family appealed against the award. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Home Renovation & Repair Contractors in the Philippines for 2025 Visionary Echo Learn More Undo A division bench of Justices KS Mudagal and KV Aravind confirmed the water tanker's wrong-way driving caused the accident, dismissing the insurer's appeal. On compensation, it cited the Supreme Court's Pranay Sethi case ruling on considering established income. The bench noted that additional allowances, including for car, holiday, fuel and vehicle maintenance, performance bonus, and food valet, supplemented the basic salary and the house rent allowance. Pay slips showed consistent monthly payments, establishing these as part of the agreed employment package. The bench termed as erroneous the tribunal's assumption about the completion of his probation and the salary stability. It emphasised that the Rs 1.4 lakh salary during probation reflected recognised skills and expertise. Given the deceased man's permanent employment status at age 35, the documented evidence supported the enhanced compensation. MSID:: 121534269 413 |
