Yoga Day preparations lead to traffic congestion in Vizag
Preparations for the upcoming International Yoga Day event are causing severe traffic disruptions across the city, particularly impacting the stretch from the Indira Gandhi Zoo Park to Maddilapalem Junction. The authorities have restricted the entry of vehicles on the Beach Road from Jodugullapalem to RK Beach, leading to severe congestion. Vehicles moved at a snail's pace between Adarsh Nagar Junction and Maddilapalem on Wednesday (June 18, 2025). Though the traffic flow eased a bit during the afternoon, it worsened again by the evening. Motorists were seen stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the stretch from Venkojipalem Junction to Hanumanthawaka Junction. Stranded vehicles included school buses, auto-rickshaws, and even ambulances. 'We expected traffic jams in view of the Yoga Day event, but not so early. The authorities could have at least used one lane of the Beach Road until June 19,' said a commuter, visibly frustrated by the congestion at Venkojipalem Junction. People attending offices and examinations were the worst affected. The DSC candidates who have an examination scheduled for June 19 received calls from the authorities, urging them to start early for the exam centre due to anticipated traffic delays. Both the traffic and civil police personnel were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation. In an attempt to ease the traffic congestion, traffic signals were disabled, and drones were used for aerial monitoring and coordination. Home Minister V. Anitha admitted to the traffic snarls and assured that the police were doing their best to manage the situation and minimise disruptions. Two-day holidays for schools Meanwhile, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad issued a release on Wednesday (June 18, 2025), announcing holidays to all schools on June 20 and 21 in view of the International Yoga Day celebrations.

Steps will be taken to develop Nakkapalle hospital and Revupolavaram in Anakapalli district, says Home Minister
Home Minister V. Anitha has said that Nakkapalle government hospital is being developed as a 100-bed hospital. She also stated that the government is taking steps to develop Revupolavaram as a major tourist destination. The Minister took part in 'Mukha Mukhi' programmes at Namavaram villages in S. Rayavaram mandal in Payakaraopeta constituency in Anakapalli district on Wednesday. Interacting with people as part of 'Mukha Mukhi', Ms. Anitha alleged that during the previous YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, not a single village saw development activity. But under the NDA government, villages are witnessing all-round development, she said. She said that Jalluru and Panduru bridges are nearing completion. She also announced that soon, an Anna Canteen is going to be opened at Payakaraopeta. She said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been working with a vision for the future generations and under his leadership, several industrialists are evincing interest to invest in the State. Anakapalli district is also receiving a significant number of investments. The arrival of bulk drug and steel plants will create significant employment opportunities, she said. During the programme, Ms. Anitha has assured to provide door-to-door tap water connection. She also said that steps are also being taken to ensure there are no issues related to irrigation water. The Home Minister also received petitions from several persons and many issues were resolved on the spot. 'Eruvaka' programme Earlier, Ms. Anitha participated in 'Eruvaka' programme at Geddapalem village. As part of the programme, she performed a traditional ritual, offering prayers and ploughed the field with oxen. She distributed subsidised seeds to farmers and also launched drone services for farmers. Speaking to the farmers, Ms Anitha said the government is committed to providing modern, technology-based equipment to farmers. She noted that drones are making agricultural tasks easier for farmers. She said that the NDA government has been giving high priority to the welfare of farmers.

Vizag police launch ‘Astram' app to tackle traffic issues in the city
Minister for Home V. Anitha on Sunday (June 8) launched 'Astram', a traffic monitoring app designed by the Visakhapatnam City Police, during a programme at the police conference hall here. She was accompanied by Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi, Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Ajitha and a few others. Ms. Anitha said the city police have been trying to ensure a smoother traffic, and the app was being launched keeping in view the interests of public. She said that with the city growing by leaps and bounds, traffic issues have become a major problem and the government was using technology to tackle it. Mr. Shankabratha Bagchi said Visakhapatnam is the only city after Bengaluru, where the 'Astram' app will be used by the police as well as public. Though the app was launched in Vijayawada earlier, it is only being used by the police. He said that the public can get real-time updates about the traffic in the city using the app, which will can be downloaded from the Play Store. He said field officers and traffic police on duty will report traffic situations in their localities to the control room, and the data will be integrated and further shared on the app on real time. The officer added that the app allows an analysis of the cause of the traffic congestions—whether it is a vehicle breakdown, road accident, road design issue or signal problem. The police can analyse and come up with solution, he opined. He said the app will also helps design green channels during VIP movements and transportation of body organs during emergencies.

HRF demands resignation of Home Minister for ‘defending police torture' of Tenali youths
The Human Rights Forum (HRF) has criticised Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V. Anitha for her reported statement defending the action of Tenali police in which three youths, accused of manhandling a constable, were thrashed in full public view. 'The incident, a video clip of which went viral on social media, is a stark display of police impunity,' HRF State general secretary Y. Rajesh and AP&TG Coordination committee member V.S. Krishna said in a statement on Wednesday. 'The reported statement of the Home Minister justifying the police action is an alarming breach of Constitutional responsibility by a person tasked with upholding the law,' they said. Instead of fixing accountability, the Home Minister has 'emboldened a culture of impunity within the police force', the HRD said and demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government initiate an independent and time-bound inquiry into the episode. 'If her (Home Minister's) statement is true, remove her from office. Her endorsement of such excesses not only undermines the Rule of Law but also amounts to a breach of the Constitutional oath,' they said. 'By openly siding with the erring police personnel, the Home Minister has not only abdicated her responsibility as a public servant but also undermined the legal order. Equally troubling is the silence of the Director General of Police over the brazen abuse of power by the Tenali police,' they said. Further, the Home Minister's alleged 'casual dismissal of the caste identities of two of the Dalit victims of police brutality' by saying 'a wrongdoer has no caste or religion' trivialises the systemic nature of caste-based violence, they said. Since the formation of Andhra Pradesh, 'no Home Minister has defended the police torture so openly and unapologetically,' they alleged.

Bulk Drug Park, steel plant in Anakapalli will help create jobs, says Anitha
The Bulk Drug Park and the steel plant proposed in Anakapalli district will create thousands of jobs, Home Minister V. Anitha has said, adding that the development and welfare are going hand-in-hand in the NDA government's tenure. The Home Minister was speaking at the TDP's Mini-Mahanadu organised at Payakaraopeta, for which a large number of people gathered. The event also saw the participation of Excise Minister Kollu Ravindra, MLAs, other people's representatives and party cadres. Ms. Anitha said that the people of Payakaraopeta gave her a huge majority while electing her as an MLA. She assured that every hardworking party worker would be recognised by the leadership. Criticising former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Ms Anitha warned that the State would have been under chaos had he been returned to power. Countering the former CM's recent 'cinema' remarks, Ms Anitha said that the 'cinema' recently shown by the people of Andhra had served a lesson to him. Leaders and workers who delivered outstanding service in Payakaraopeta constituency were felicitated.
