Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 Text Size: Abang Johari said the 2023 amendment to the Sarawak Electricity Ordinance was a significant step in accelerating the development of renewable energy. - Bernama pic KUCHING: Sarawak is forging ahead with its Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), charting a clear path toward a low-carbon and sustainable energy future to support the state's rapid and inclusive development, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg (pic). In a keynote address, 'Renewable Energy Sarawak: Powering Sustainable Growth', delivered by Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki at the 18th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Exhibition and Conference (SNEC PV) in Shanghai, China, Abang Johari hailed energy security and affordability as the key pillars of the state's long-term development agenda. Advertisement 'Sarawak aims to achieve 10 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity by 2030, and 15GW by 2035, positioning the state as a renewable energy leader in the region. 'Sarawak currently has an installed capacity of 5,898 megawatts (MW), with over 60 per cent coming from hydropower, supported by thermal generation to ensure energy security. 'Reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy is essential to meet the growing demands of our people and industries,' he said, as quoted in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) repport. Abang Johari said the 2023 amendment to the Sarawak Electricity Ordinance was a significant step in accelerating the development of renewable energy. Abang Johari also highlighted the state's push for solar energy, citing the successful commissioning of the 50MW Batang Ai Floating Solar Farm in December last year – the first hydro-solar hybrid initiative in Malaysia. 'Sarawak is targeting 1,500MW of solar generation capacity by 2030 and is exploring more largescale floating solar projects in collaboration with regional and international partners. 'We are committed to making Sarawak the 'Battery of Asean' by exporting renewable energy to our neighbours. 'The success of our crossborder electricity export to West Kalimantan in 2016 has spurred plans to expand energy connectivity to Sabah, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. 'These efforts contribute to the development of an integrated Borneo Grid and, eventually, the Asean Power Grid,' he said. The ongoing SNEC PV Conference features over 3,000 exhibitors representing 95 countries, and serves as a key platform for policy updates, market trends, and global energy stakeholder engagement. Abang Johari also extended an invitation to global industry players to attend the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum (Saref 5.0), scheduled to be held in Kuching this Sept 3 and 4. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Should you own Utility stocks going forward? Jefferies weighs in
-- In a note to clients Tuesday, Jefferies analysts presented a mixed view on Utility stocks, maintaining an Overweight rating in large-cap Utilities but an Underweight rating in small-cap Utilities. While sentiment toward the sector remains strong, with inflows into ETFs, Jefferies' strategy team holds diverging opinions based on market capitalization. Sentiment for Utilities has been "very strong and provides a nice tailwind for the group," partly because "many of the stocks will help with the AI build out." Despite the sector's lower liquidity, Jefferies notes that "flows are currently in the sweet spot, not too hot and not too cold." Addressing the "higher for longer" interest rate environment, Jefferies believes it's "not really" a "death knell for this sector." The firm's forecast suggests rates will hover close to current levels, with three Fed Funds cuts expected in 2025 starting in September. While Utilities in small caps are more tied to rates, Jefferies notes that the correlation is weak in large caps. Interestingly, when the Fed funds rate falls, Utilities typically lag, which "has not been the case in this rate reduction environment." However, Jefferies points out that if investors are seeking yield, "the dividend yield is below both the 10-year and the 2-year," suggesting "one can find cheaper dividend-paying stocks elsewhere." Valuations are also said to be a concern, with Utilities viewed as "expensive in both size segments." Jefferies' overall view leans towards Overweight large-cap utilities due to attractive valuations and strong earnings visibility, while being Underweight in small caps where Utilities are among the "most-expensive groups and does not provide enough economic torque." Texas A&M Faces Setback as star Utility player enters the transfer portal
Texas A&M Faces Setback as star Utility player enters the transfer portal The transfer portal has struck the Texas A&M softball team once again. This time, however, it involves a major contributor expected to play a key leadership role. On Friday afternoon, in a shocking announcement, starting utility player Amari Harper entered her name into the softball transfer portal. The junior was a key contributor all season, routinely delivering clutch hits and showing emerging power by knocking out crucial home runs. While the Aggies have a deep roster and should be able to fill the void, Harper's departure is still a significant loss, especially if head coach Trisha Ford can't find a way to bring her back next season. Every athlete has their reasons for entering the portal, and even though this move is surprising, players must do what they believe is best for their future. Entering the portal doesn't necessarily mean Harper is leaving, but in today's NIL landscape, anything is possible. Aussies rushing to buy $99 Uniqlo jacket as an affordable dupe to designer Barbour coat
Don't get me wrong, I love designer brands as much as the next person. But instead of splashing cash, I'm busy hunting down the best dupes, made from high-quality materials that will last for seasons to come. That's when I discovered the Utility Short Blouson, buried deep into the men's section of Uniqlo, that looked incredibly similar to the best-selling jackets at British Heritage brand Barbour (minus the hefty price tags). Known for countryside wax coats loved by the royal family, Barbour's signature shapes have grown in popularity, especially as we head into the colder months, with hundreds of shoppers adding the recognisible collared jacket back into their wardrobe. Rather that forking out a few hundred dollars for the real deal, the similar Uniqlo style ticks all the boxes, without the triple digits. Complete with a corduroy collar, cuff details, multiple pockets and a checked lining, the Utility jacket comes in three different colours; black, brown or olive, and is the perfect length and shape to wear with a pair of jeans. The jacket has now gone viral on TikTok, with shoppers showcasing the endless way to wear it. So if you're in the market for a versatile jacket to wear from the office to evening drinks, consider it found. Best fashion deals of the week Click Frenzy Mayhem may be over, but there's still plenty of sales to shop across our favourite fashion brands, and we've been keeping an eye out for the best deals to shop. From May 21, New Balance is hosting an epic end of year sale with up to 40 per cent off select styles across its lifestyle and performance collections, making it the perfect opportunity to stock up on active essentials. Those on the hunt for a designer pair of sunnies without the hefty price tag, Sunglass Hut are offering up to 50 per cent off selected sunglasses, across popular brands like RayBan.
