Netflix thriller leaves viewers 'gripped' with retelling of true story

Directed by Thomas M. Wright, The Stranger is a psychological crime thriller that is inspired by the real-life investigation of 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe Penned and helmed by Thomas M. Wright, the 2022 psychological crime thriller 'The Stranger' draws its inspiration from Kate Kyriacou's factual tome 'The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe's Killer'. Reflecting on the heart-wrenching murder case of 13 year old Daniel Morcombe, the film casts a light on the intricate investigation of a child's kidnapping. It follows undercover detective Mark Frame (portrayed by Joel Edgerton) as he embarks on a covert mission to befriend Henry Teague (played by Sean Harris), the main suspect in the case. ‌ 'The Stranger' made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 within the Un Certain Regard category, subsequently enjoying a select cinema release across Australia. Later that year, it garnered international attention with its launch on Netflix for worldwide streaming. ‌ Boasting an impressive 92 per cent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, 'The Stranger' was met with widespread acclaim. One critic hailed it as "a standout, a high-octane look into the pursuit of a criminal – a compelling and measured film that delivers," while another described it as "Taut and effective." In July 2022, amidst concerns over the use of their son's tragedy for promotional gains, Daniel's parents 'demanded' that the filmmakers stop using their late son's name in marketing efforts, reports the Mirror US. The producers of The Stranger issued a press release regarding the movie's portrayal: "The Stranger is a fictionalised account of the undercover police operation that resulted in a successful murder prosecution. "With the deepest regard for the family involved, we've omitted any mention of the victim's name from our film, and it contains no representation of the murder's particulars. Nor does it portray the family in any form or fashion. "The focus instead lies on the unheralded police professionals whose years of service, not to mention their mental and physical well-being, were dedicated to cracking this case alongside others of a similar nature. We had initially reached out to the victim's family during the film's early stages to inform them of the project; however, they opted not to participate – a choice which we continue to honour." ‌ Critics have found favour with the film, one noting: "The Stranger offers strong, subtle performances from its leads, and a freshly vital approach to familiar material." Praise has also flowed for the director, as one review extols: "Wright artfully directs his film with the kind of precision that'll keep you hanging on to every shot." Audience reactions have been equally enthusiastic, with one viewer declaring: "Brilliant, just brilliant. Edgy, disturbing, paced, enough without too much being said... do yourself a favour. Plug in and shake yourself." Another said: "Stunning film. No other film in a long time had me as gripped and absorbed as this, even more so on the second watch. Truly visceral, but there's no denying you need to steel yourself for it. "I particularly enjoyed the score, and the varying blends of tension and mood drifting throughout. Superb lead performances and a great example of a low budget/big impact production."

Karan Johar On Bollywood's Herd Mentality: "After Chhaava And Stree, Everyone Wants To Make Historicals And Horror-Comedies"

New Delhi: Karan Johar recently got candid about how the latest trend of "herd mentality" in Bollywood is plaguing the film industry more than ever. He elaborated by saying that with blockbusters like Chhaava and Stree, everyone wants to now make historicals and horror-comedies, as they seem to have cracked the code to keep the audience interested. He further shared how he wants to focus on individualism. Karan added that he was asked about his universe of films like the trending horror-comedy verse, and he said his verse was cinema itself. What's Happening Karan Johar recently spoke about how everyone in the film industry is trying to copy each other's success stories. Speaking of the ongoing "herd mentality" that seems to be prevalent in the film business, Karan told Bollywood Hungama, "I think it is everybody grappling to do what others are doing. We see Pushpa running and catering so strongly to the tier-2 and tier-3 audiences, and suddenly, we will see 20 others wanting to do the same. You see Chhaava working, everybody would want to make historicals. Stree and everybody wants to make horror comedies. Those worked because they were individually strong, and there was no other option in that genre. It was a unique thought that made those films work." He added, "We all need to have individual thoughts that are unique to ourselves. Someone asked me the other day, 'Do you have a universe?' I was like, 'As in?' They were like, 'A spy universe or a cop universe.' I was like, 'My universe is cinema itself.' I am not here to build universes, I am here to tell stories. In that story if there's a universe, then why not?" Karan's Latest Achievements Karan Johar recently attended the Cannes 2025 Film Festival. Neeraj Ghaywan's film Homebound, which had Karan Johar as one of its producers, premiered in the Un Certain Regard category. The cast featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa were also present. In A Nutshell Karan Johar shared his thoughts on Bollywood emulating the tried-and-tested formula of successful films. He spoke about the "herd-mentality" phenomenon where everyone now wants to make horror comedies and historicals after blockbusters like the Stree franchise and recently Chhaava.

Cinema Without Borders: Of love and hatred—The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo

The barren, dusty landscape gives the feel of an American Western but is punctured by the colours and brightness, verve and vitality of the trans community. They are all named after colourful birds with drab and dull miners on their hunt. This sense of contrasts and contradictions takes several other forms—the emotions and drama get interspersed with humour, violence gets balanced by unconditional love and brutality is offset by tremendous grace. Cespedes' narrative does get needlessly protracted and overtly didactic at points but he does manage to create a compelling universe thanks to the production design (Nicolas Roses and Oscar Rios Quiroz of the Art Department) and cinematography (Angello Faccini). A world that you carry home and that stays in your mind long after the film is over. Needless to say, Cespedes gets ample strength and support from his phenomenal large ensemble. Cortes brings an unusual depth to her character that goes way beyond her young age. Dinamarca is spontaneous and natural as Mama Boa, despite being a non-professional actor. The most compelling presence is of Catalan as Flamenco who uses body language, face and expressive eyes to great effect. Totally mesmerising! In the pride month, and with transgender rights under siege globally, specially USA and UK, it feels fitting to look back at the Chile-France-Germany-Spain-Belgium co-production that won the Un Certain Regard prize at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival. The bigotry and otherising at its core haven't quite gone away but have acquired myriad other forms, be it to do with sexuality or caste, class, gender or religion.
