Karan Johar On Bollywood's Herd Mentality: "After Chhaava And Stree, Everyone Wants To Make Historicals And Horror-Comedies"

New Delhi:
Karan Johar recently got candid about how the latest trend of "herd mentality" in Bollywood is plaguing the film industry more than ever. He elaborated by saying that with blockbusters like Chhaava and Stree, everyone wants to now make historicals and horror-comedies, as they seem to have cracked the code to keep the audience interested.
He further shared how he wants to focus on individualism. Karan added that he was asked about his universe of films like the trending horror-comedy verse, and he said his verse was cinema itself.
What's Happening
Karan Johar recently spoke about how everyone in the film industry is trying to copy each other's success stories.
Speaking of the ongoing "herd mentality" that seems to be prevalent in the film business, Karan told Bollywood Hungama, "I think it is everybody grappling to do what others are doing. We see Pushpa running and catering so strongly to the tier-2 and tier-3 audiences, and suddenly, we will see 20 others wanting to do the same. You see Chhaava working, everybody would want to make historicals. Stree and everybody wants to make horror comedies. Those worked because they were individually strong, and there was no other option in that genre. It was a unique thought that made those films work."
He added, "We all need to have individual thoughts that are unique to ourselves. Someone asked me the other day, 'Do you have a universe?' I was like, 'As in?' They were like, 'A spy universe or a cop universe.' I was like, 'My universe is cinema itself.' I am not here to build universes, I am here to tell stories. In that story if there's a universe, then why not?"
Karan's Latest Achievements
Karan Johar recently attended the Cannes 2025 Film Festival. Neeraj Ghaywan's film Homebound, which had Karan Johar as one of its producers, premiered in the Un Certain Regard category. The cast featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Vishal Jethwa were also present.
In A Nutshell
Karan Johar shared his thoughts on Bollywood emulating the tried-and-tested formula of successful films. He spoke about the "herd-mentality" phenomenon where everyone now wants to make horror comedies and historicals after blockbusters like the Stree franchise and recently Chhaava.

Tejasswi Prakash recalls ‘the only time' Karan Kundrra cooked for her: ‘We were in the mood for…'

Tejasswi Prakash loves being on Celebrity MasterChef, where she is getting a chance to showcase her culinary skills. But the Naagin actor doesn't really cook at home. 'I have not yet cooked a full-fledged meal for him (Karan Kundrra). I have made him basic masala rice etc,' Tejasswi said in a chat with The Khabri. In another conversation with FilmiBeat, she revealed what Karan made for her once. 'Everyone knows Karan cooks delicious food. But he doesn't cook at home. The only time (he did)…we were in the mood of eating fries at about 3-4 am, so we sliced some potatoes and fried them. He is fond of presenting food in an appetising way. So, he ensures he presents a basic dish with some great seasonings like lemon, masalas etc. He did all that and gave me the fries to eat. That's the only thing he made for me. It's a madhouse, especially after the dogs. It's fun,' said Tejasswi. A strong relationship is always built on mutual respect, trust, shared responsibilities, and the willingness to grow together. As such, partners cooking or looking out for each other is a positive sign. Sharing responsibilities or chores helps enhance relationships further, said Dr Santosh Bangar, senior consultant psychiatrist, Gleneagles Hospitals Parel Mumbai. 'Supporting each other by doing little things can create a sense of belonging and boost happiness. Even a little push or encouragement can boost your partner's confidence and ease out any apprehensions,' said Dr Bangar. Sharing or expressing thoughts, feelings, and concerns with your partner through such gestures can significantly lighten up mental load and reduce stress, the expert said. 'This approach could provide emotional support and stability as it shows comfort and understanding. It also allows couples to spend quality time and always have a safe space in each other, which can help create deep connections,' said Dr Bangar.

Sudhanshu Pandey On KJo's The Traitors: ‘No Phone, No WiFi, It Was Peaceful'

Last Updated: Sudhanshu Pandey shared that the experience in The Traitors was meditative, as there were no phones, no internet and just one TV. Sudhanshu Pandey has stayed away from television since he exited Anupamaa. After leaving the daily soap, he wanted to try something different. Now, he's back in action as a contestant on The Traitors, a reality show hosted by Karan Johar, where he's competing with 19 others. At first, the show may seem like something out of his comfort zone, but Sudhanshu actually found it very peaceful. He shared that the experience was 'meditative," as there were no phones, no internet and just one TV. This gave him a chance to observe others closely and think more about human nature. In a recent conversation with ETimes, the actor speaking about the experience on the show and what he's learnt so far, he said, 'It was a very meditative space to be in because we would play the whole day and then go back to our rooms at night and be just completely by yourself. There was only one TV, there was no internet, there was nothing, there was no phone, there was no WiFi. So you were completely disconnected." 'I was observing everybody there and how they behave. They were splitting their personality every other second. You realise, there are all sorts of people there. So, it makes you sit and observe the kind of people around you or what kind of people are they growing into. It was a great observation class for me and a great vacation, I would say," Sudhanshu Pandey explained. The Anupama star feels that for Karan Johar, hosting The Traitors must have been tough for him. Since the filmmaker enjoys talking and connecting with people, staying silent and serious for a show like this was not easy for him. He had to hold back his usual energy and remain calm. Sudhanshu also spoke about why he doesn't expect to have fights with anyone on the show. He explained that he always treats people with respect, and because of that, he usually gets the same respect back. Sudhanshu Pandey further explained that he didn't plan any special strategy for the show. He decided to just be himself and act naturally, without pretending or showing any fake image. For him, a reality show is meant to show the true side of a person. Since he has been in the industry for many years, he feels this is a good chance for the audience to see his real side. He wants people to connect with the real version of him. Other than Sudhansu Pandey, The Traitors also feature Anshula Kapoor, Apoorva Mukhija, Ashish Vidyarthi, Elnaaz Nourouzi, Harsh Gujral, Jannat Zubair, Janvi Gaur, Jasmine Bhasin, Karan Kundrra, Lakshmi Manchu, Maheep Kapoor, Mukesh Chhabra, Nikita Luther, Purav Jha, Raftaar, Raj Kundra, Sahil Salathia, Sufi Motiwala and Uorfi Javed.
