PU student's death on campus: Lapses on part of both university & students' council, finds SDM probe
Two months after a 21-year-old Panjab University (PU) student was stabbed to death during a concert on campus, sub-divisional magistrate (central) Naveen Kumar, in his inquiry report, stated that there were lapses on the part of the varsity authorities as well as the student council. The report stated that the university administration came under pressure from the student council after two earlier concerts were cancelled. Further, they failed to do proper groundwork and anticipated a crowd of only 4,000, while on the day of the concert, around 10,000 people turned up. The security arrangements were grossly inadequate. Though private security was deployed, it was minimal and layered security was poorly implemented. The authorities had also requested a reduced police presence, it was stated. This went against them when students started getting agitated over the delay in the singer's performance. The student council was also criticised for failing to gauge the scale and seriousness of the event. They did not consult experts and organised the concert with a limited budget. However, such events require substantial logistical support and infrastructure, which was lacking. On March 28, 21-year-old Aditya Thakur, a second-year computer science student at University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET), was stabbed to death during a concert by Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma. The event was organised by the campus student council at UIET in Sector 25. According to the FIR registered at the Sector-11 police station, Arjun Dalal, a 19-year-old student and resident of Sector 20, was in the audience with his friends Aditya, Abhay, and Aniruddha. As they were leaving the venue, an argument broke out between Aditya and a group of five to six unidentified youths. The altercation escalated when the group allegedly threatened Aditya and his friends. Dalal told the police the group had threatened to kill them. The case was cracked within two days with the arrest of four students. After the tragedy, the varsity took a slew of measures to ensure students' safety. PU had carried out its own inquiry into the matter and the dean students' welfare was asked to step down during this, but later given a clean chit. To bolster security, PU has hired a former superintendent of police (SP) rank PPS officer Tejinder Singh Sandhu in an advisory role for campus security. Professor Dinesh Kumar of the department of laws has been appointed faculty supervisor of the security department. PU has also advertised 54 new posts in the security department, the first major recruitment in a decade. PU is also introducing measures to restrict entry of outsiders into campus. The varsity has also decided to ban Holi celebrations at the Students Centre. It has also decided to completely do away with star nights on campus.

From blueprint to buzz: PU's Sec-25 campus to get 4-storeyed student centre
1 2 Chandigarh: After years of student demand and over two years since its initial approval by Panjab University's budget estimate committee, the long-pending Student Activity Centre for the Sector-25 campus is finally moving from plans to execution. With the Chandigarh administration granting formal approval to the conceptual master plan for the South Campus, the university is set to begin work on the centre — envisioned as a hub for student-led activities, cultural events, and recreational engagement. The project was first formally taken up in Feb 2022 and has since been awaited by students of Sector-25, which houses departments like UIET, UIAMS, Dental Sciences, Microbiology, and Biotechnology. With over 5,000 students and hostels for both domestic and international students, the campus lacked a student-dedicated facility akin to the iconic Sector-14 Student Centre. Now, a four-storeyed round structure will come up opposite Girls Hostel No. 8, echoing the original centre's circular layout but redesigned with a contemporary, student-focused vision. It will house reading room, club rooms, seminar space, multipurpose galleries, a gym, and a modest cafe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo "This will be a dedicated space for student expression, learning, and community life," said a senior official from the PU architect office. "The structure draws inspiration from the original Student Centre but is adapted to today's campus realities. The priority here is not food stalls or retail, but activity, engagement, and student-led programming." Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig welcomed the approval, calling it a major step forward. "The conceptual Master Plan has been developed with a student-centric focus. Sector-25 has immense potential to support emerging and interdisciplinary fields, and this expansion is a timely boost. Both campuses will now complement each other in vision and infrastructure," she said. The new Student Activity Centre (official name) will be set within a planned residential and academic ecosystem. Unlike the heavily commercial surroundings of Sector-14, only a few convenience stores are proposed near the new centre, keeping in mind the adjacent residential zone, which includes three girls' hostels, one boys' hostel, and an international hostel. The Master Plan outlines nine new academic blocks in addition to the twelve existing ones, a multilevel basement parking facility near the UIET Gate with space for 700 vehicles, a new Library-cum-Reading Hall, and the long-delayed multipurpose auditorium. The auditorium, which began construction in 2009, remains incomplete. A new tender issued on May 8 for road work and civil finishing has revived hopes for its eventual commissioning, though the original March 2025 target has quietly slipped. Teachers' residences are also part of the upgrade. "Judicious land utilisation has been a top priority," the Architect Office official added. "Academic blocks are proposed up to four storeys, while residential buildings — including new staff housing — have been proposed up to seven storeys to optimise space within the campus layout." With the approval now in place, university officials say groundwork will begin in phases, including with the most awaited — and most visible — of the projects: a centre for students that's been long overdue. South Campus Master Plan: Key Highlights Student Activity Centre: Four-storeyed round building with seminar hall, clubs, gym, reading room, galleries, and a small café. Multipurpose Auditorium: 2,200-seat facility under construction since 2009; fresh tender issued May 2025. Library-cum-Reading Hall: New academic library to support Sector-25 departments. Multilevel Parking: Basement facility near UIET Gate, capacity of 700 vehicles. Academic Blocks: Nine new buildings proposed, in addition to existing twelve. Hostel Infrastructure: Four girls' hostels, two boys' hostels (one new), and an international hostel. Staff Housing: New residential towers proposed up to seven storeys.

2024-25 placements: UIET student bags highest package of ₹24.73 lakh
Even before sitting for his final BTech exams, Anuj Kumar, a computer science student at Panjab University's University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), has landed the highest placement package of the 2024-25 session — ₹24.73 lakh per annum. Anuj, 22, who hails from Karnal, secured a job with Cisco in Bengaluru, where he is currently interning. He had cracked a national-level entrance test to secure the internship, which eventually led to the full-time job offer for which he expressed gratitude to the UIET placement cell. But he isn't resting on his laurels. After gaining a few years of industry experience, Anuj has set his sights on pursuing an MBA from a top business school abroad. As per data released on Monday for the 2024-25 placement session, a total of 325 UIET students have secured jobs so far — 78.4% of the batch — with an average CTC of ₹8.5 lakh per annum (LPA). Top sectors for recruitment this year were information technology, consultancy and core engineering. Notable recruiters included American Express Cisco, and ZS, while firms such as Viscadia, FutureFirst, and Hero Cycles participated in UIET's placement drive for the first time. Over 100 recruiters visited the campus this season. PU vice-chancellor Renu Vig, who previously served as the UIET director, said, 'Now in its 23rd year, UIET has shown remarkable growth. Strong industry linkages with companies like Infosys, IBM and the Bharti Group, along with a vibrant alumni network, have played a key role.' Numbers on the decline Notably, the highest offer in UIET, even at graduate level, is neck and neck with the highest offer received by the University Business School (UBS), offering post-graduate courses, where the highest offer this year was for ₹25.11 LPA. But over the years, the packages offered have reduced. In 2023, Amazon had hired four UIET students for ₹45 LPA after offering ₹32 LPA packages the previous year. Even the average package this session — at ₹8.5 LPA — is lower than last session's ₹9.11 LPA and ₹8.72 LPA in 2023. Officials said since the placements had not concluded, the average may rise by the end of the session.

Director Prof Sanjeev Puri emphasised the focus on bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry expectations. "We stress technical competence as well as soft skills, and this year's results reflect that approach," he said. Students received training in aptitude, interviews, and technical skills, along with sessions by companies such as Infosys and American Express. Alumni working with firms like JP Morgan and Apple also conducted mentoring programmes, while events like Ideathon and Technovate provided hands-on industry exposure. Training and placement officer Prof Sarbjeet Singh said placement activity is still ongoing. "A number of off-campus processes are under way. More offers are expected in the coming weeks, and we remain confident about closing the season on a stronger note," he said. The placement cell now plans to bring in international recruiters and explore emerging fields such as AI, fintech, and green technology. BOX: Lesser growth than previous years This year's placement figures fall short of the peaks seen in recent years, particularly the 2022–23 session, which had marked a high point for UIET. That year, students received offers up to Rs 45 lakh from Amazon, and a record 382 offers were made overall. The average package then stood at Rs 8.72 lakh. In 2023–24, the top on-campus offer was Rs 25 lakh from Cisco, with a higher off-campus offer of Rs 42 lakh by ServiceNow, and an average of Rs 9.11 lakh. By contrast, the 2024–25 cycle has so far seen fewer offers, a lower highest package of Rs 24.73 lakh, and a drop in average salary. While officials cite ongoing off-campus processes, the slowdown has been noted.
