2024-25 placements: UIET student bags highest package of ₹24.73 lakh
Even before sitting for his final BTech exams, Anuj Kumar, a computer science student at Panjab University's University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), has landed the highest placement package of the 2024-25 session — ₹24.73 lakh per annum.
Anuj, 22, who hails from Karnal, secured a job with Cisco in Bengaluru, where he is currently interning. He had cracked a national-level entrance test to secure the internship, which eventually led to the full-time job offer for which he expressed gratitude to the UIET placement cell.
But he isn't resting on his laurels. After gaining a few years of industry experience, Anuj has set his sights on pursuing an MBA from a top business school abroad.
As per data released on Monday for the 2024-25 placement session, a total of 325 UIET students have secured jobs so far — 78.4% of the batch — with an average CTC of ₹8.5 lakh per annum (LPA).
Top sectors for recruitment this year were information technology, consultancy and core engineering.
Notable recruiters included American Express Cisco, and ZS, while firms such as Viscadia, FutureFirst, and Hero Cycles participated in UIET's placement drive for the first time. Over 100 recruiters visited the campus this season.
PU vice-chancellor Renu Vig, who previously served as the UIET director, said, 'Now in its 23rd year, UIET has shown remarkable growth. Strong industry linkages with companies like Infosys, IBM and the Bharti Group, along with a vibrant alumni network, have played a key role.'
Numbers on the decline
Notably, the highest offer in UIET, even at graduate level, is neck and neck with the highest offer received by the University Business School (UBS), offering post-graduate courses, where the highest offer this year was for ₹25.11 LPA.
But over the years, the packages offered have reduced. In 2023, Amazon had hired four UIET students for ₹45 LPA after offering ₹32 LPA packages the previous year.
Even the average package this session — at ₹8.5 LPA — is lower than last session's ₹9.11 LPA and ₹8.72 LPA in 2023. Officials said since the placements had not concluded, the average may rise by the end of the session.

From its humble beginnings in a borrowed room at Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, it has grown to become a premier institution, now situated on a sprawling 420-hectare campus located on the Grand Trunk Road, around 15km west of Kanpur city. Land for the institute was gifted by the govt of Uttar Pradesh in 1960 and, by March 1963, it had shifted to its current location. Today, IIT-Kanpur is renowned for its academic excellence, research, and innovation. A visit to the campus back then would have revealed a serene landscape featuring standing crops, acacia woods, a picturesque line of stately mango trees, flocks of peafowl roaming freely, and a quintessential Indian countryside scene. This idyllic setting made a perfect blend of natural beauty and rustic charm. The institute's inaugural batch, the Class of 65, produced some illustrious technocrats and business honchos in the country like Abhay Bhushan, a computer scientist who has been a major contributor to the development of the internet TCP/IP architecture and is the author of the File Transfer Protocol, Suresh Pandey (former director, Bokaro Steel Plant), and Vinay Kumar Modi (Director of Modi Industries Limited). The batch members recall how they departed from the campus in May 1965 and were waiting to hear when the convocation would be held. Finally, they received invitations by India Post. By then many batchmates had left for studies abroad and some of the ones in India could not attend because of work or personal issues. A few of them, though, did make it to Kanpur to receive their degrees. IIT-K made arrangements for them to be picked up at the railway station and they were lodged at the Visitors' Hostel. Abhay Bhushan, chairman of Asquare Inc and part of IIT-K's 1965 batch, reminisces: "The convocation was planned for the afternoon, from 3pm to 5.30pm. We, the graduating students, were asked to arrive by 1.30pm to collect our gowns and caps and to get instructions on walking in the procession. In all, 67 BTech and 5 PhD degrees were awarded." "During the convocation, several speeches were given. Of note was Dr Kelkar's speech where he recalled what we, as the pioneer batch, had been through and how we were better educated to handle whatever our profession and life may have to offer. He said that the faith that they have shown in the future of the institute has been a real source of inspiration," Bhushan said. The Class of 1965 gifted IIT-K Rs 2.5 crore during its Diamond Jubilee Reunion celebrations in March. The batch pledged this amount towards creating a "Pioneering Research and Innovation Award" at the institute. Talking to TOI, the institute's present director, Professor Manindra Agrawal, said: "This year, we are celebrating the 58th convocation. Over the years, the institute has come a long way in contributing to the nation's technology and innovation landscape, as well as shaping bright minds. As an alumnus myself, every convocation here is nostalgic."

PU moves up in QS World Rankings, enters 901-950 band
Chandigarh: Panjab University has moved up significantly in the QS World University Rankings 2025, breaking into the 901-950 bracket globally. Last year, it was placed in the 1001-1200 band, and the rise reflects improvement across several key academic and research indicators. According to the detailed metrics published by QS, the university has made notable gains in academic reputation, citation impact, and employment outcomes. PU's academic reputation score rose from 7.8 last year to 9.4 this year, while its score for citations per faculty—a key measure of research output and quality—jumped from 24.1 to 43.5. Employer reputation also saw an increase from 7.3 to 11.5, suggesting growing industry recognition of PU graduates. Faculty-student ratio improved from 6.2 to 10.3, and employment outcomes rose from 31.8 to 39.6. The university's performance in the international research network metric also continued to rise, reaching 33 from last year's 30.9. There has also been improvement in PU's international student metrics. QS World University Rankings 2026: With the rank highest in four years, PU now among top 950 universities globally
The Panjab University (PU) has seen a remarkable improvement in the QS World University Rankings 2026, jumping to the 901-950 band from its previous position of 1001-1200, marking a significant advancement of 100 positions. The university's global ranking has continued to show improvement in the last four years with the global rank band of 1201-1400 in 2023 to 901-950 in 2026. The QS World University Rankings 2026, which evaluated 8,467 institutions from 106 countries and published rankings for 1,501 institutions globally, recognised Panjab University's (PU's) consistent progress across multiple performance indicators. This achievement represents the university's best performance in recent years, reflecting its commitment to academic excellence and research quality. From research to employment opportunities, the PU has scored well in a host of parameters. Research impact: A normalised citation score of 109.7 per faculty member, more than twice the global median of 52.0, in this year's ranking. Employment outcomes: Ranking 10th nationally, the PU have achieved significant improvement, outperforming the global median. Sustainability: With the PU embarking on sustainability-related curriculum, there is bound to be further improvement in its performance. Research excellence: The varsity's research output continues to grow impressively with 9,467 papers published in the period of 2019 to 2023 with 100,932 normalised citations. PU Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Renu Vig has expressed her happiness at the continuous improvement in its performance on most of the parameters over the last four years.
