Now, Trichy residents can avail instalment option for UGD deposits
Trichy: Trichy corporation has, for the first time, introduced an instalment-based payment option for house service connection deposits, to ease the financial burden on residents seeking new underground drainage (UGD) connections under the ongoing UGD project phases, the . This move comes in response to reluctance, particularly among residents of low-income areas, to pay the full deposit amount upfront. The new instalment facility aims to encourage more households to opt for legal UGD connections, thereby reducing the risk of untreated wastewater being discharged into stormwater drains. Phases II and III of the UGD project will cover 24 wards in the city, where a complete underground sewage network will be laid to handle three types of wastewater: fecal waste from toilets, grey water from bathrooms, and wastewater from kitchens. Even properties in economically weaker areas that lack private toilets and rely on public sanitation facilities will be provided UGD connections for non-fecal wastewater. This wastewater will be channelled to sewage treatment plants for proper treatment and disposal. The civic body is targeting at least 3,500 UGD connections per ward in all 24 wards, covering both residential and commercial properties that are registered for property tax. However, the non-refundable deposit amount—ranging from 7,500 to 20,000 depending on the location and type of property—was proving to be a financial hurdle for many, as both residents and traders have expressed their inability to pay at one go. "We are accepting the payment in 10 instalments now. Both residential and commercial property owners can make use of the option and obtain UGD connections," a corporation official said. The local body has planned to promote the availability of instalment options among low-income group areas, to encourage new UGD connections, particularly in Ariyamangalam and Thiruverumbur areas. Trial run for phase II and phase III of UGD projects is planned in the next three months to commission both the UGD network and a new sewage treatment plant (STP) built at Keela Kalkandarkottai.

Highways Department to repair Palakkarai Main Road within a few days
Restoration work will be taken up in the next few days on the Palakkarai Main Road, which had been dug up for laying underground sewer lines, sources in the Highways Department said on Thursday. The poor condition of the road, following the execution of the UGD work, had triggered a road blockade by irate residents near Warehouse in the city on Wednesday. According to Highways Department sources, the UGD work was completed five days ago and the road, which is under the maintenance of the department, will be restored within the next few days. Sources said a proposal to relay the Thanjavur Main Road for a stretch of about 1.2 km from the Palpannai Junction towards Gandhi Market is expected to be sanctioned soon. The work would be taken up under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme. The road has developed several potholes after the execution of the underground sewer line work, much to the inconvenience of motorists.

Mammoth UGD charges upset Coimbatore residents
Residents across Coimbatore city are reporting alarmingly high Under Ground Drainage (UGD) user charges on the civic body's online payment portal, with demands for some properties extending into lakhs of rupees. Coimbatore Corporation had recently passed a resolution stipulating revised monthly UGD user charges, to be assessed based on the size of buildings. As per the revised structure, residential buildings up to 600 are to be charged ₹120 per month; 601 to 1,200 at ₹150; 1,201 to 1,800 at ₹180; 1,801 to 3,500 at ₹210; 3,501 to 5,000 at ₹250; 5,001 to 10,000 at ₹280; and properties above 10,000 at ₹300 per month. However, several residents have discovered significantly inflated figures on the citizen web portal, where property taxes are also managed. P. Srinivasan, a resident of Gandhipark, said, 'The Corporation recently provided me with the UGD connection book, similar to property and water tax documents. Although no payment demand was explicitly made, I checked my account online and was shocked. My building falls within the 1,801 to 3,500 slab, which, as per the newly proposed ₹210 per month, would only amount to approximately ₹22,680 from 2017 to 2025. Yet, the portal shows a demand of ₹3,30,000.' A similar situation was reported by a resident in Nanjundapuram. For an 1,100 sqft building, the expected charge for nine years (at ₹150 per month) should be ₹16,200. However, the total displayed demand was ₹1,36,000. K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause, emphasised the need for clarity. 'The State government must clarify the basis on which these charges are calculated, as there is a complete lack of transparency. Given that there were no regular monthly charges for paid UGD previously, when the civic body begins collection, it should be well-prepared to avoid such errors,' he stated. According to a senior Corporation official, any reported discrepancies will be investigated. They aim to ascertain if these are isolated cases or part of a wider problem, with steps taken to resolve them.

Conservancy worker slips into manhole in TN's Thoothukudi, dies
THOOTHUKUDI: A conservancy worker employed by Tiruchendur municipality on contract basis asphyxiated to death after he fell into a manhole while clearing a choked underground drainage (UGD) pipeline near the Tiruchendur Murugan temple on Sunday. The deceased was identified as P Sudalai Mani (40) of Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli. Sources said the municipality deployed contract conservancy workers to clean choked UGD pipeline as sewage overflowed on the road. A group of conservancy workers were working on a manhole on the road behind the Tiruchendur government hospital on Sunday and Mani accidently slipped into it. On information, the fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot and rescued him, but he had asphyxiated to death, sources said. They added that UGD lines are to be cleaned only after the lids are kept open for three days to allow any gases that may have accumulated inside to escape. However, authorities had forced contract workers to open the lids and clean the pipe on Sunday itself in view of the Vaigasi Visagam festival. A case has been registered. CPM town secretary Muthukumar said police shifted Sudalai Mani's body to Thoothukudi MCH for post mortem examination instead of Tiruchendur GH to thwart any protests by rights groups.
