Pennsylvania Turnpike starts removing toll plazas at Interchanges

(WHTM)– The Pennsylvania Turnpike announced it has started removing toll plazas as part of its next phase of open road tolling. The PA Turnpike says toll plazas are being demolished where Open Road Tolling (ORT) has launched. So far, open road tolling has been launched east of Reading in the Northeast Extension. Pennsylvania State Police and PA Turnpike personnel will be in the impacted areas during each demolition. The PA Turnpike says that the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) on the Northeast Extension was the first toll booth to be completely removed. 'The PA Turnpike has been a leader in transportation from the day we opened in 1940 as 'America's First Superhighway' and while traditional tollbooths made practical sense then, we now have more advanced and efficient systems that better serve today's 21st century customers,' said PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton. 'The switch to ORT modernizes the Pennsylvania Turnpike for today. We look forward to providing customers with a safer and more convenient travel experience on the PA Turnpike and better serving the communities we touch along the way.' This is a developing story. Pennsylvania Turnpike exit temporarily closing: Here's where

(WHTM) – The Pennsylvania Turnpike is warning drivers that an exit will be temporarily closed for a demolition project. The Turnpike says the Pocono Interchange (Exit 95) on the Northeast Extension will be closed in both directions from 12-5 a.m. on Sunday, June 8. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The closure will allow crews to remove the overhead toll gantry as part of the toll booth demolition and Open Road Tolling. Drivers looking to exit in the area should take the Wilkes-Barre (Exit 105) or Route 903 (Exit 87) interchanges. Why aren't there any ships on the Susquehanna River? Open Road Tolling will be implemented on turnpike interchanges east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension by the end of 2026. Open Road Tolling allows drivers to use their E-Z Pass or Toll By Plate without stopping or slowing down. The statewide launch of Open Road Tolling is scheduled for January 2027. New Jersey Turnpike to Replace Tesla Chargers After Contract Expires

The agency that runs the New Jersey Turnpike is replacing the more than 60 superchargers for Tesla vehicles along the highway after the state did not renew its contract with the electric-car maker. New Jersey officials said in a statement on Friday that the state would shift to another company that would provide universal charging stations. The change, already underway, will almost triple the number of charging stations along the turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, a second major toll road, where chargers are being added for the first time. The decision drew an apparently irked response from the company's chief executive, Elon Musk. 'Sounds like corruption,' he wrote on his social media platform, X, on Friday night, without providing any evidence. Mr. Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. Thomas Feeney, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which operates the highways, said that the decision was both about increasing the number of stations and providing chargers that were compatible with more than just Tesla vehicles. 'Our goal is to serve as many E.V. owners as possible across all our service areas,' he said. The state has amended its agreement with Applegreen, an Irish company that already manages restaurants and stores in the turnpike's service areas, to include its new line of fast charging stations to replace the Tesla equipment and build new stations elsewhere. In a message posted to X on Friday, Tesla said it would continue to offer its superchargers in New Jersey. 'We have been preparing for 3 years for this potential outcome by building 116 stalls off the New Jersey Turnpike, ensuring no interruption for our customers,' said the post, which included a map of the charging stations. OTA asks for public input on new alignment of South Extension

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) — There was a tense back and forth exchange in Norman on Tuesday evening with hundreds of people who live in the path of the proposed Turnpike letting the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) know how they feel. Most of those in the crowd didn't care one bit about what the OTA had to say, but they definitely let them know not to put a Turnpike in their backyard. 'The big reason for why we are here is that the alignment has to move west,' said David Strep, President and CEO of POE and Associates. The meeting over a proposed extension through Cleveland County quickly turned tense. 'We want to be able to help you to make this a good Turnpike,' Strep said. OTA changing route of south extension, asking for public input Though after every few sentences, most in attendance were letting him know they don't want a Turnpike at all. 'We will repeat again to them tonight, which is no Turnpikes,' said Dave Moore, who is against the Turnpike. 'The town hall meetings that they had back in, I believe, the spring of 2022, were nothing more than the same kind of meeting we're having tonight,' said Randy Carter, who is also against the Turnpike. 'They just were showing people where the turnpike was proposed to go, and they didn't ask us if we wanted it.' The OTA says Tuesday evening's meeting was to gather input on where the south extension could go. 'How can you help us? We would love to hear your input to make this alignment as could as it can be,' Strep said. All of this comes after the OTA was told they could not build as close to Lake Thunderbird as they initially planned. 'The Turnpike Authority is going to do everything possible to even improve the water quality coming into the lake,' Strep said. However, some found that hard to believe. There are also concerns about what the new alignment will possibly mean for hundreds of homes. 'Obviously there is no way we can build these Turnpikes without impacting homes,' Strep said. Continuous outbursts led to one woman being escorted out of the meeting. A short time later, a man stood up to the rowdy crowd. 'Will you all please be quiet! I came here for some public information. I'm a member of this community, and I'm tired of hearing all the hysteria about this. Hush, let them talk.' After the presentation, tables were set up to receive public input. Those opposed say they will not provide input on the new alignment, but will continue to do more to prevent it from happening at all. 'We, as Oklahoma citizens, are appealing directly to Executive Director Kelly, to Secretary of Transportation Yates, and to Governor Stitt do what Secretary of Transportation McCaleb did in 1999, tell the Turnpike Authority to stop and let our people go,' Moore said. The OTA says you have until June 30 to weigh in on the new alignment for the South Extension. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
