EXCLUSIVE Man United's biggest loss this summer: Insiders reveal the huge hole left by Nick Cox's Everton move, how he transformed United's academy and the reason every player's parents will miss him

Even as late as this week, Nick Cox was keen to confine talk of his exit to as small a circle as possible. After nine years at Manchester United, Cox is heading for a new challenge at Everton where the prospect of becoming technical director and getting the scope to map out a brighter future for the Toffees was simply too good a role to turn down.

Everton backed to complete 'perfect' Man Utd transfer for David Moyes

Everton could target Manchester United in the summer transfer window and one player would be a 'perfect match' for David Moyes if the Toffees were to get a deal over the line Everton should target a summer move for Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund according to their former player Pat Nevin. Hojlund has endured two difficult seasons since joining the Red Devils in a £72million deal from Atalanta. The 22-year-old scored 10 goals in 52 appearances last term as United struggled to find the net and 16 goals in 43 outings during his debut season in 2023/24. Ruben Amorim is looking to strengthen his forward line this summer having already added Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen linked to transfers. ‌ Nevin, who played 150 games for the Toffees and scored 21 goals, reckons David Moyes would be able to prise the Denmark international away from Old Trafford on loan. And he believes the Everton boss will find a player well-suited to his style. ‌ Moyes will find himself short a striker as Dominic Calvert-Lewin's contract runs out at the end of June. And Nevin reckons the perfect solution is out there. Speaking to Spin Genie, the ex-Scotland international has urged Moyes to make a move. "There are some good names out there," said Nevin. "The loan market is something Everton have looked at in the past and I think it's something they should revisit again. It gives them all sorts of possibilities as they're not spending £50 million. "There are two or three players that they could think about bringing in from Manchester United but Rasmus Hojlund is the one that sticks out. If you look at his style of play, it's a perfect match with how David Moyes likes to play. While his numbers haven't been great this season, Moyes loves hard workers and that's something you can never complain about in regards to Hojlund. "It's not very often David Moyes has had a 20-30 goals-per-season striker. He's had strikers who run in behind and create space to bring others into play, so, if he's available, Hojlund could be a tempting option for Everton to sign on loan." ‌ Everton have already missed out on Liam Delap this summer, after the striker joined Chelsea. Moyes has admitted that the Toffees will need to find greater success to enjoy an easier time in the transfer market. 'Players, if they have the chance, want to play in the Champions League. I've just come out of a club ( West Ham United) where three out of four years we played in Europe and what a difference it makes when you're a club in Europe because the players are attracted, whatever European competition that is, is attractive to a lot of players and makes a big difference," he said. 'We're not at that at the moment so I don't know if I can compare us selling Wayne [Rooney] but we were always a club that didn't have a huge amount of money. We had to generate some money ourselves. 'But then, the club had £500million to spend and in that period and I don't think it was as good as when we spent carefully and were a little bit wiser." Everton confirm Heather Payne will leave club this month

Everton have confirmed that Republic of Ireland international Heather Payne will leave the Women's Super League club when her contract expires at the end of the month. The versatile 25-year-old, who is not in Carla Ward's Irish squad for this month's friendlies in the USA having been hampered by injury, has been at the Toffees since August 2023 after spending four years in the US collegiate system with Florida State Seminoles. The Ballinasloe native won Everton's Young Player of the Season award in her debut campaign before making another 17 appearances last season. "Heather has worked tirelessly and her improvement as a player, and a person, is clear to see. Her attitude and desire to win games has helped us massively throughout my time as head coach," said Everton head coach Brian Sorensen of the former Peamount United player as her impending exit was confirmed. Payne's Ireland team-mate, goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, remains part of the club's first team and is contracted until June 2026. The Everton women's will be , with the men's side moving to the newly-built stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Manchester United to lose 'key leader' of backroom staff to Everton

Manchester United are set to lose director of academy Nick Cox to Everton as talks reach an advanced stage. The 47-year-old is being lined up for the role of technical director with the Toffees and his departure from Old Trafford is expected to be confirmed soon, reports the i paper. Cox has been at Manchester United since 2016 and has been head of the academy since 2019. The significant role saw him leading the development of players from Under-9s all the way up to Under 21s. Manchester United has always boasted an impressive pathway to the first team for their youth players and that continued under Cox. The likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have graduated to first team regulars in recent years, while Toby Collyer and Harry Amass are pushing to do the same. However, Cox is now set to leave the academy behind and take the step up to a senior leadership role with the Everton first team. The Athletic report that Cox was 'recently named on an all-staff email at United as a key leader on the football side,' so his departure will come as a blow to the Red Devils. He will be expected to stay with Manchester United until a replacement is found, though, so his exit may not be imminent just yet. The Friedkin Group completed their takeover of Everton in December and the recruitment of Cox will continue the overhaul made by the new owners. David Moyes returned to the club as manager in January, replacing Sean Dyche, and comfortably kept the Toffees in the Premier League after a sticky start to the campaign. Everton will start the 2025-26 season in their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind at the end of the last campaign. There will also be a new arrival at Everton in the recruitment department as they are bringing in Manchester City's director of recruiting and scouting, James Smith. Another significant coup for the Toffees will see Smith link up with Moyes again having been with the Scot in his first spell at Everton and at Manchester United. Recruitment will be key for Everton this summer as they look to move away from a relegation scrap and push up the table under Moyes. More Trending Kyle Walker has reportedly agreed a one-year deal to move to the club, having been deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester City and at AC Milan, where he spent the second half of last season on loan. Also being linked with swapping the Etihad for Everton is Jack Grealish, who is expected to leave Manchester City this summer after falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola. City are reportedly open to offers of around £40m for the player they spent £100m on, with Everton not the only interested party. His mammoth wages could be a problem but a loan deal could be struck for the England winger. Nick Cox set to leave Man Utd academy role to become Everton technical director

The Toffees are in the midst of a restructure under the Friedkin Group ownership and have headhunted the Red Devils' director of academy for a role in their new set-up. Cox is understood to have turned down a variety of other opportunities since moving to Old Trafford from Sheffield United in 2016, having received interest from Premier League, EFL and European clubs as well as governing bodies. Nick Cox with former United academy chief Nicky Butt (Simon Peach/PA) A succession plan is under way at United and PA understands he will remain in the post for the coming months to ensure a smooth transition before his amicable exit for Everton. Cox was promoted to head of academy in 2019 and has helped overhaul United's fabled youth system, with the club winning the FA Youth Cup in 2022 as Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo starred. A widely respected figure in youth development, 27 academy players made their United debut during his time as head of the youth system. United have sold around £100million of homegrown talent in the last three years and sell-on clauses mean that figure is expected to rise.
