Hijacking syndicate: 3 arrested in Gauteng
A joint law enforcement operation successfully intercepted members of a hijacking syndicate in Evaton West, Gauteng, over the weekend. Law enforcement units from CII Gauteng, Sedibeng Tracking Unit, Sedibeng Flying Squad, Gauteng Traffic Police High Priority Crimes and Internal Affairs and the Sedibeng Infrastructure Unit D Shift intercepted a vehicle hijacking syndicate operating between Randfontein and Evaton West over the weekend. Police spokesperson Constable Thulisile Msibi says the operation was launched following intelligence received from an informant, which indicated that suspects who had hijacked a vehicle in Randfontein were transporting it to Evaton West to be 'cooled off' and later sold to an unknown buyer in the area. Sedibeng Ster reports that the syndicate was reportedly using a white Audi as an escort vehicle, while a red VW Polo was identified as the hijacked vehicle. The team intercepted the suspects on Moakedi Street in Evaton West. 'Upon arrival, one suspect was found inside the red Polo, which was later confirmed to be hijacked [in] a case opened in Mohlakeng. [Other] suspects were discovered in the white Audi, that was 'escorting' the stolen vehicle,' Msibi says. Police recovered one unlicensed firearm with its serial number filed off and 19 rounds of live ammunition inside the Audi. All three suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of a hijacked vehicle. Woman shot dead in alleged attempted hijacking
EVATON. – A murder case is being investigated by the Evaton police following a shooting on April 12. A woman was left dead after an alleged attempted hijacking on Avondale Road. According to police spokesperson Constable Thulisile Msibi, the incident occurred at approximately 01:20 when the victim was traveling with her husband and a friend, returning from Green Valley. As they approached their home, shots were fired. 'The husband, who was driving, told police that he immediately got out of the car and ran for safety. His wife and their friend also fled from the vehicle. From a distance, he noticed individuals attempting to steal his car, but they were unable to take it as he still had the key, which caused the car to lock its gears,' Msibi explained. Msibi adds that the suspects fled the scene, and the husband used the car to chase after them but lost sight of where they went. 'Upon returning, he began searching for his wife. A few metres from their entrance, he found her lying in the grass, unresponsive, with gunshot wounds to her chin and neck. Emergency services were called, but she was declared dead on the scene. Her cellphone was also missing, believed to have been taken by the suspects during the attack,' said Msibi. The suspects are currently unknown and still at large. 'We are investigating a case of murder and urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the suspects' whereabouts to come forward,' she said.
