Bayern's 'many nice stories' from Musiala hat-trick to Karl debut
Bayern's Jamal Musiala celebrates scoring his side's eighth goal during the FIFA Club World Cup Group C soccer match between Bayern Munich and Auckland City at the TQL Stadium. Sven Hoppe/dpa Jamal Musiala scored a hat-trick upon his return, Thomas Müller his 250th goal in an official match, and super talent Lennart Karl got his first minutes in Bayern Munich's senior team. It was thus no wonder that board member for sport Max Eberl spoke of "many nice stories" after Sunday's 10-0 thrashing of New Zealand part-timers Auckland City in their Club World Cup opener. Advertisement "That's exactly what we need. We need these positive results, these positive elements, if we want to be here for a long time," he said. Bayern's next tasks in the US will be tougher when they face Argentina's Boca Juniors on Friday and Lisbon club Benfica on June 24 in their other group games. "We can't now have the feeling that we can let up in any way. On the contrary, we need to step it up a notch again," newly signed Jonathan Tah warned, while also insisting that "we're ready." Musiala and Upamecano back Germany defender Tah played his first match since a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday in Cincinnati, and fellow centre back Dayot Upamecano got his first minutes for the Bundesliga champions in a comeback from injury. Advertisement Upamecano came on at the hour together with Musiala, who was on fire after two months on the sidelines with a hamstring tear and netted a hat-trick within a span of 16 minutes. "Jamal is back, and that with a hat-trick. That is extraordinary," Eberl said. Coach Vincent Kompany said: "It is great when an attacking player scores. He won't need so many talks tonight, and tomorrow he will feel good." Kompany added that "the highlight for me was Jamal Musiala's defensive sprint. And if you're doing that in this sort of game, then you've got a good foundation.' Müller milestone Müller, whose 25 years at his boyhood club will end after the tournament, was on target twice, with his second for the final score also his 250th in an official Bayern game. Advertisement 'We played well, played seriously, played with intensity," Müller said. "We want to keep going like this. We won't always get results like this, but the way we played is what we want to take into the next games.' Super talent Karl makes debut Wingers Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise also scored twice each, and talent Karl came on for the second half with the score already 6-0, making his debut at the same age of 17 as Musiala once did. Karl didn't find the net but had several moments to show his talent, from a tight angle shot to a courageous dribbling. "It is always about the future of the club. So it was important to give Lennart Karl his first minutes. He deserved it," Kompany said. Advertisement Karl is among several Bayern academy players in the Club World Cup squad, having previously impressed for Bayern's U17 and U19 teams with goals, assists and plenty of skill. He has said he "absolutely wants to succeed here at FC Bayern." Day off Karl and the others could relax a little on Monday as Kompany gave the players the day off to enjoy the various attractions at their base camp in Orlando, Florida. "It is also important for me that we don't unnecessarily have all the stress of a tournament every day," Kompany said.

Germany updates: Court rules on Syrian 'torture' doctor – DW – 06/16/2025
06/16/2025 June 16, 2025 Club World Cup: Bayern Munich hit Auckland City for ten amid FIFA criticism Bayern Munich got their Club World Cup campaign underway with a thumping 10-0 win over Auckland City in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Sunday. The game between the German champions and the semi-professional outfit from New Zealand quickly proved to be a mismatch as Bayern flew into a 6-0 half-time lead, before adding four more after the break. "It's difficult to accept too much praise for such a game," admitted head coach Vincent Kompany after Jamal Musiala scored a hat-trick and Thomas Müller, Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman all scored twice. "The most important thing for me was that the players took it seriously," continued Kompany. "There will be tougher challenges to come." Bayern next face Argentinian giants Boca Juniors in Miami on Friday before playing Portuguese side Benfica. Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller both scored twice for Bayern Munich Image: Jeff Dean/AP/dpa/picture alliance During the game, some of the traveling Bayern supporters expressed criticism of world football's governing body and tournament organizers FIFA. "Ten years [on from] Baur au Lac, world football is more poorly governed than [ever] before!" read a banner unfurled behind the goal, referring to the luxury Swiss hotel in which several high-ranking FIFA executives were arrested on corruption charges in May 2015. The political circumstances surrounding FIFA's newly expanded Club World Cup, including its Qatari sponsorship, Saudi-funded broadcasting arrangements and FIFA President Gianni Infantino's proximity to US President Donald Trump, have kept the organization firmly in the sights of critics. Back on the pitch, Borussia Dortmund begin their campaign on Tuesday when they face Brazilian giants Fluminense.

🔎 The Debrief as PSG confirm favourite status and Bayern show no mercy
The Club World Cup really kicked into gear on Sunday with four games, including a record-breaking win for Bayern Munich. Here's what happened. You can sign up to DAZN to watch every FIFA Club World Cup game for free. What happened? 📝 Sunday's action kicked off in Cincinnati as Bayern Munich scored 10 (Ten) against amateur outfit Auckland City. Thomas Müller netted twice with what could be his last ever goals for the club whilst Jamal Musiala bagged a late hat-trick. Advertisement After that it was Paris Saint-Germain's turn to impress as they hammered 10-man Atlético de Madrid 4-0 to further enhance their status as the likely favourites for this tournament. Then it was off to New Jersey as the MetLife Stadium played host to Palmeiras and Porto. The Brazilian giants were probably the better side in this one but the game remained goalless. Finally it was heartbreak for home side Seattle Sounders, as they lost 2-1 to Botafogo thanks to two first half headers. Player of the day 🔥 PSG carried on where they left off in last month's Champions League final with a total demolition of Atleti in Pasadena. Advertisement There were plenty of exceptional performances on display, but the best came from midfielder Vitinha. The Portugal international has truly found a home with the Parisien outfit and once again looked like the best central midfielder on the planet. Stat of the Day 📊 Bayern Munich's 10-0 annihilation of Auckland City was the largest winning margin in Club World Cup history. The biggest margin of defeat before yesterday's game was Al Hilal's 6-1 loss to Al Jazeera back in 2002. What this means 🤔 Bayern Munich sit top of Group C with an incredibly healthy goal difference and now wait to see how Benfica and Boca Juniors get on later tonight. Advertisement In Group B meanwhile, PSG and Botafogo are level on three points with the European champions leading on goal difference. Palmeiras' draw with Porto means that Group A is on a knife-edge with all four teams now level on one point following Al Ahly and Inter Miami's own goalless draw on Saturday. What they said 🗣️ 📸 Dylan Buell - 2025 Getty Images When asked whether he felt sorry for Auckland City following their 10-0 defeat, Bayern winger Michael Olise simply replied: "No". Palmeiras winger Estevao was pleased with his side's point against Porto, telling "We played a good game, with a lot of volume, passing exchanges, but lacked efficiency with our finishing. We weren't capable of scoring a goal. Now we have to improve and go for a result in the next game.' Advertisement PSG captain Marquinhos was delighted with his side's intensity as they brushed Atleti aside: "We never know how a game will end up, especially when playing an opponent like them. Our team showed its strength. Yes, we won the Champions League, but today we showed our intensity once again. We have to be humble, continue to defend, to attack, and keep going in the same direction.' Seattle Sounders may have lost in front of their home crowd, but head coach Brian Schmetzer was happy with his side's performance: "It was an exciting game. I'm happy for the fans and proud of the players' effort. In the first half, we gave a couple goals away but came back in the second half and made a statement. We showed we can compete. That's what we're asking: work and compete. And they did that tonight.' What's next? 👀 There are three more games on Monday and into the night with Chelsea making their bow against MLS side LAFC. Advertisement Then we've got a fascinating encounter between Boca Juniors and Benfica that will round of the first matches in Group B before Brazilian behemoth Flamengo take on African giants Esperance de Tunis. 📸 FREDERIC J. Auckland City FC lose 10-0 to Bayern Munich at FIFA Club World Cup
Bayern Munich romped to a 10-0 victory over Auckland City — a team made up of part-time players — in its Club World Cup opener. Jamal Musiala had a hat trick in a 17-minute span of the second half in front of a crowd that unfurled a banner saying "Smash FIFA!" while accusing the governing body of mismanagement. Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise scored two goals each for the Bundesliga champions, who went ahead on Coman's goal six minutes in. Bayern had a 17-1 advantage in shots on target. Musiala, a 22-year-old midfielder, replaced Harry Kane in the 61st minute, making his first appearance since April 4 after recovering from a hamstring injury. He scored in the 67th minute, converted a penalty kick in the 73rd and scored again in the 84th. Auckland City — not to be confused with Auckland FC in the A-League — were the club champions in the often-overlooked confederation of Oceania, and are the only non-professional team at the tournament. Before a crowd of 21,152, fans displayed a red and white banner referring to the 2015 raid by US law enforcement at a Zurich hotel that led to the arrest of many soccer officials: "10 Years Baur Au Lac — World Football Is More Poorly Governed than Before! Smash FIFA!" Meanwhile, Fabián Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, and Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened their Club World Cup play with a 4-0 victory over Atlético Madrid. PSG largely dominated Atlético at the Rose Bowl in its first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31. Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atlético in the second half of the European powers' meeting in front of 80,619 fans at the site of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup. Earlier, Lionel Messi was denied a sensational late winner as Inter Miami had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Egypt's Al Ahly in the opening game of the tournament. Argentina's eight-time Ballon d'Or winner looked set to provide a stunning finish in front of a crowd of more than 60,000, whipping a curling long shot towards the top corner in the sixth minute of added time. But he was denied his moment of glory as Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy pushed the ball onto the crossbar. Messi also shaved the post with a free kick earlier in the second half. Miami had its own good fortune, surviving a first-half onslaught by 12-time African champion Al Ahly, with goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saving a penalty from Trezeguet just before the break. AP
