Auckland City FC lose 10-0 to Bayern Munich at FIFA Club World Cup

Bayern Munich romped to a 10-0 victory over Auckland City — a team made up of part-time players — in its Club World Cup opener.
Jamal Musiala had a hat trick in a 17-minute span of the second half in front of a crowd that unfurled a banner saying "Smash FIFA!" while accusing the governing body of mismanagement.
Thomas Müller, Kingsley Coman and Michael Olise scored two goals each for the Bundesliga champions, who went ahead on Coman's goal six minutes in. Bayern had a 17-1 advantage in shots on target.
Musiala, a 22-year-old midfielder, replaced Harry Kane in the 61st minute, making his first appearance since April 4 after recovering from a hamstring injury. He scored in the 67th minute, converted a penalty kick in the 73rd and scored again in the 84th.
Auckland City — not to be confused with Auckland FC in the A-League — were the club champions in the often-overlooked confederation of Oceania, and are the only non-professional team at the tournament.
Before a crowd of 21,152, fans displayed a red and white banner referring to the 2015 raid by US law enforcement at a Zurich hotel that led to the arrest of many soccer officials: "10 Years Baur Au Lac — World Football Is More Poorly Governed than Before! Smash FIFA!"
Meanwhile, Fabián Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, and Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened their Club World Cup play with a 4-0 victory over Atlético Madrid.
PSG largely dominated Atlético at the Rose Bowl in its first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31.
Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atlético in the second half of the European powers' meeting in front of 80,619 fans at the site of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup.
Earlier, Lionel Messi was denied a sensational late winner as Inter Miami had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Egypt's Al Ahly in the opening game of the tournament.
Argentina's eight-time Ballon d'Or winner looked set to provide a stunning finish in front of a crowd of more than 60,000, whipping a curling long shot towards the top corner in the sixth minute of added time.
But he was denied his moment of glory as Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy pushed the ball onto the crossbar. Messi also shaved the post with a free kick earlier in the second half.
Miami had its own good fortune, surviving a first-half onslaught by 12-time African champion Al Ahly, with goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saving a penalty from Trezeguet just before the break.

Auckland City thumped 6-0 at Club World Cup by Benfica

Auckland City has been thumped 6-0 by Benfica in a Club World Cup game that was delayed at half-time because of thunder and lightning. The 2025 A-League Men premiers might have preferred the match be called off rather than delayed with the score at 1-0, as things got out of hand in the second half to leave the New Zealanders with a 0-16 goal difference after a first-up loss to German giants Bayern Munich. 2022 World Cup winner Ángel Di María scored his first goal from the penalty spot deep into added time at the end of the first half and his second, the team's sixth, was again from the penalty spot in added time at the end of the match. Leandro Barreiro also nabbed a double. Auckland City exchanged counterattacks with the Portuguese powerhouse in the first half of the Group C match, but was still outshot 18-1 and things got out of hand after the weather delay. "I'm a little bit frustrated," Auckland coach Paul Posa said. "The first half was solid. It was just very disappointing to concede a goal. I think the guys are going to be a little bit disappointed in the scoreline." A thunderstorm delayed the start of the second half in Orlando for more than 2 hours and when the match resumed, the goals came pouring in for Benfica. Vangelis Pavlidis made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, Renato Sanches scored a short time later and Barreiro then scored a pair of goals to increase the lead to 5-0. Auckland midfielder Tong Zhou went down with an apparent head injury just before half-time. Trainers attended to Zhou on the field, and Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras complained about the delay. He was given a yellow card after a spat with game officials. Auckland's final game in the group stage will be a mid-week clash against Argentina's Boca Juniors in Nashville. AP

Flamengo give Chelsea the Blues in Club World Cup

Flamengo have overturned a first-half deficit to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in their Club World Cup clash, a result that gives the Brazilians pole position in Group D. Second-half goals from Bruno Henrique, Danilo and Wallace Yan secured the South American side their second consecutive win in the tournament. Pedro Neto's early strike had put Chelsea ahead but the Premier League side squandered several opportunities to extend their lead, allowing Flamengo to stage a stirring comeback. The Brazilians scored two goals in quick succession through Henrique and Danilo, in the 62nd and 65th minutes, which was followed by Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson being shown a straight red for a nasty studs-up challenge three minutes later. Flamengo wrapped up the victory with Yan's strike in the 83rd minute. The result leaves Chelsea second with three points while Esperance de Tunis and Los Angeles FC have yet to register a point, both sides having a game in hand. Flamengo began brightly, pressing Chelsea high and forcing defensive errors, but they failed to capitalise on early chances as Luiz Araujo, Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Ayrton Lucas were denied by Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez. However, Chelsea struck first in the 13th minute after Flamengo fullback Wesley sliced a clearance attempt and lost his footing, gifting the ball to Neto. The Portuguese winger raced unmarked into the box and slotted a composed finish past Agustin Rossi to give Chelsea the lead. The goal shifted momentum, with Chelsea dominating possession and creating further chances. Malo Gusto and Liam Delap had efforts saved by Rossi. Flamengo also had a great chance, with Enzo Fernandez clearing a Gerson volley off the line just before half-time. Chelsea also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty when Fernandez appeared to be held in the box. Flamengo, however, roared back into contention after the break. Bruno Henrique, introduced as a substitute, made an immediate impact in the 62nd minute. Gerson's cross found Gonzalo Plata at the far post, whose clever header set up Henrique for a simple tap-in to equalise. Just three minutes later, Flamengo took the lead from a corner. Henrique rose highest to head the ball back across the box, where Danilo pounced to fire home from close range. Chelsea's troubles deepened when Jackson, who had just come off the bench, was sent off in the 68th minute for a reckless studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas. Flamengo sealed the victory in the 83rd minute when Yan, another substitute, slotted home a rebound after a surging run from the right by Plata. In Orlando, Ángel Di María and Leandro Barreiro each scored two goals to help Benfica rout Auckland City 6-0 in a Club World Cup game that was delayed at half-time because of thunder and lightning. Di María, who teamed with Lionel Messi to win the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, scored his first goal from the penalty spot deep into added at the end of the first half. His second, and the team's sixth, was again from the penalty spot and deep in added time at the end of the match. Auckland City exchanged counterattacks with the Portuguese powerhouse in the first half of the Group C match, but were still outshot 18-1. Vangelis Pavlidis made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, Renato Sanches added a third a short time later and Barreiro then scored a pair of goals to increase the lead to 5-0.
