Ben Roethlisberger paints troubling picture for Steelers, T.J. Watt contract situation
Everyone has an opinion on the T.J. Watt holdout that appears to be brewing — including Steelers legendary QB Ben Roethlisberger. On his podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, Big Ben discussed the possibility of Watt and the Steelers being far apart on a potential deal and compared the situation to his infamous "hold-in" in 2021: Advertisement "This year he's not there — and so you asked the question, what's the difference? I don't know. Only T.J. knows the difference. My only speculation and guess — and it's because you brought it up — [the Steelers and Watt] must not be close," argued Big Ben. "Like, if you're close — I would think T.J. would do what he did last time, like, 'Okay, we're close. We'll get this thing done.' Maybe they're not even in the ballpark, and T.J.'s like, 'Why am I coming if we're not in the ballpark?'" Roethlisberger's speculative take makes perfect sense — as reaching the new $40 million per year standard set by Browns DE Myles Garrett makes these negotiations far more difficult. Insider gives positive update on Steelers, T.J. Watt contract negotiations
T.J. Watt's minicamp no-show was far from ideal — but insider Mike Garafolo recently provided some reason for hope. On last Tuesday's episode of The Insiders, Garafolo took a more positive stance on the Steelers–Watt situation: Advertisement 'I don't feel that this one is contentious,' Garafolo said. 'If a player misses mandatory minicamp over the next couple days, you don't have to fine a player. We'll see what the Steelers wind up doing on this one. I know that they feel really good about the talks that they've had and the offers that they've made. … Mike Tomlin has the belief that T.J. Watt is gonna be just fine working away from the facility, so they're not stressing about that part of it. If there was a pressure point right now — and the start of training camp seems like it's a pressure point — I feel like this thing would get done. And it will get done at some point. I don't sense any long-term concerns about T.J. Watt — despite the fact that he's throwing up that peace sign in that picture he posted on Instagram a couple of weeks ago." Despite concerns over whether or not the Steelers are even close to the number Watt is looking for, there seems to be an overreaction stemming from his minicamp absence — one that can be easily alleviated if he shows up at training camp next month. Steelers DT Cam Heyward roasts Antonio Brown: 'Let me know when you're back in the states'
Cam Heyward isn't going to tolerate any disrespect coming his way — even if it's from ex-Steelers WR Antonio Brown. On Wednesday, Brown took to social media to refer to Cam "Hayward" as "Magic [Johnson's] son," including pictures some may find offensive — and the veteran defensive tackle didn't take the insult lying down, clapping back at the ex-Steelers wideout: Advertisement "Good thing you can't spell?! Let me know when you back in the states." Heyward is referencing the situation in which Brown is allegedly in the Middle East while the former receiver faces an attempted murder charge in the United States — stemming from his involvement in a violent altercation at Adin Ross' celebrity boxing event, as reported by The Washington Post. Brown has ruffled more than a few feathers on his social media page, but Heyward is definitely the last person's bad side I'd want to be on. Mark Kaboly confident T.J. Watt, Steelers extension gets done based on past contracts
Mark Kaboly confident T.J. Watt, Steelers extension gets done based on past contracts Everyone has an opinion on the Steelers–T.J. Watt contract drama — and that includes Mark Kaboly, who's convinced a deal gets done. On Wednesday, Kaboly took to social media to argue why the Steelers are more likely than not to extend Watt long-term: 'Why do the Steelers feel like a T.J. Watt deal will happen? When the Steelers identify a player they WANT to keep, they keep. Off top of my head, the extensions that got done before the final year to significant players: Maurkice Pouncey, Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Heyward, Cam Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Diontae Johnson, Pat Freiermuth, Chris Boswell, Antonio Brown, Ramon Foster, Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, and Heath Miller. Mike Wallace and Le'Veon Bell were outliers.' Kaboly hit the nail right on the head. While Watt is likely on the tail end of his career, he is the heart and soul of the Steelers defense — and it seems like it's only a matter of when, not if, the future Hall of Fame defender signs a new extension with Pittsburgh.
