George Kittle on Robert Saleh's return: Violence is coming

George Kittle doesn't play defense, but Robert Saleh's return to the 49ers still has him fired up. Saleh built a strong defense when he was the team's coordinator from 2017-2020 and turned that success into a job as the head coach of the Jets. Saleh couldn't reach the same heights in that role and was fired during the 2024 season, which left him available for a second stint with the NFC West club this year. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show this week, Kittle shared a message for the rest of the league about what Saleh's return to the team will mean. 'Violence is coming is what I would say,' Kittle said. The tight end expanded on his thoughts about what Saleh brings to the table. 'He's really good at his job, and I'm really excited that we somehow convinced him to be our defensive coordinator again,' Kittle said. 'He knows what he's talking about, he's inspiring, he gets the boys fired up, and he just happens to also be really, really smart. So, I'm pumped to have him back in the building, just hanging out with him a little bit, talking about stuff. You can just tell he's ready to roll this year, and he's gonna get the boys fired up.' The 49ers selected defensive players with their first five picks in this year's draft and the new blood will be needed after a slew of departures on that side of the ball this offseason. If Saleh can mold them into a similar unit to the one he built in his first 49ers run, a rebound from last year's disappointing season in Northern California could be in the cards.

NFL coach says Aaron Rodgers is best Steelers QB since Ben Roethlisberger

NFL coach says Aaron Rodgers is best Steelers QB since Ben Roethlisberger Even at 42 years old, the NFL isn't ready to write Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers off. On Tuesday, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reported the comments of an unnamed NFL offensive coach who had high praise for Pittsburgh's veteran signal caller — believing Rodgers still has enough gas in the tank to be the best Steelers QB since Big Ben: "He's still throwing the s--- out of the ball, honestly," a veteran NFL offensive coach said. "He's the best quarterback they've had since [Ben Roethlisberger]. We will see how the body holds up, but I think he's going to help them immensely." Three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth took a similar stance on The Rich Eisen Show — claiming that a healthy Rodgers is "going to tear it up" with Pittsburgh. Almost two years removed from his 2023 season-ending Achilles tear, Rodgers will look to put the injury concerns behind him as he gears up for a make-or-break Steelers season. Three-time SB champion excited for Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers: 'He's going to tear it up'

Three-time SB champion excited for Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers: 'He's going to tear it up' Aaron Rodgers definitely has his fair share of doubters heading into the 2025 season — but three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth isn't one of them. On a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Schlereth touched on the Jets' inefficient run game and Rodgers' lingering injuries, then explained how great the future Hall of Fame QB looked at the end of the 2024 season: "Toward the end of the season, when I dug through the three games that I always watch as I'm prepping — I'm breaking down the coach's film, three games — I was like, 'Damn, Aaron can play,'" Schlereth said. "And then I'm watching him pregame on Sunday morning, and pregame I'm watching him throw the football versus the way a bunch of 25-year-olds throw the football — and it's like varsity versus JV. That dude can still rip it. … If [Rodgers] is healthy, and you've got [the Steelers run game], mixed with that play-action game, he's going to tear it up." The Jets had the second-worst rushing offense in terms of yards last season — and while OC Arthur Smith made it clear the Steelers didn't acquire Rodgers and DK Metcalf to "run the wishbone," the four-time MVP should have a drastically better running game to work with in 2025. Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa has tough challenge balancing success, health, says Steve Young

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's health has become a major sticking point in not only his professional career, but the fortunes of the organization. Tagovailoa, 27, has suffered several of concussions throughout his NFL career, mostly recently during a game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 of the 2024 season. Tagovailoa missed four games on injured reserve after what was his third documented head injury with the Dolphins. Advertisement On "The Rich Eisen Show," Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young spoke on Tagovailoa's situation and how he should proceed under center. 'When you put on the helmet, you are at risk. No matter what happens, you are going to be at risk,' Young said. "Tua is in a super tight spot to be able to play the game the way it should be paid and remain available." "If you are not going to attack the line of scrimmage, if you are not going to give that threat, you will not be in the Super Bowl," Young said. Steve Young NFL career cut short by injury Young, a two-time MVP (1992 and 1994) and three-time Super Bowl champion, suffered several documented concussions in his 17-year playing career between the NFL and USFL. His last concussion occurred on Sept. 27, 1999, and was said to cause him to retire. Advertisement Young led the NFL with 36 touchdowns passes in 1998 and even at age 38, was still considered one top QBs in league when he retired, coming off his seventh straight Pro Bowl season. He only played in three games in 1999 when symptoms from post-concussion syndrome forced him to retire. Young famously backed up Joe Montana for five seasons before getting his chance to start with the San Francisco 49ers, helping extend that team's run near the top of the NFL. The Niners had won double-digit regular season games each year Young was the full-time starter. Miami Dolphins handling Tua situation Dolphins general manager Chris Grier spoke about Tagovailoa in January, expressing the necessity of his quarterback to stay on the field. Advertisement 'He needs to be available," Grier said. "He needs to know how to protect himself. Like, you're going to get hit at times, it's always going to happen, but he needs to control what he can control." Tagovailoa missed a career high six games in 2024 including four straight after colliding helmet first with Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin in Week 2. The Dolphins went 2-4 record in the games that Tagovailoa missed (he was out a pair of games in December with a hip injury) and went 6-5 in the games he did play. Tua spoke to the media at the Dolphins mandatory minicamp on June 10 and reiterated his GMs words. "Doing everything I can to stay available for the guys,' Tagovailoa said. Like I've said before in the past, nothing changes with that. It's knowing when is the time to give up on a play. I would say the longevity for me to be on the field with my guys is more important than whatever that one play is. Advertisement Tagovailoa has consistently stated that he wants to play football and the concussions he has received will not take that away from him. Young knows the position Tua is in but knows what is needed if the quarterback hopes to win. Ex-NFL Player Expects Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf's Ego's to Clash in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is well-known to call out teammates publicly. That was the case last season when he threw Mike Williams under the bus. He called out Williams for running the wrong route — as he should've ran the 'red line.' Former NFL defensive end and two-time Super Bowl champion Chris Long expects some commotion this season between Rodgers and All-Pro wide receiver DK Metcalf. Advertisement 'When he was in New York — and I'm not taking a shot, but I don't love seeing stuff that should be worked out in the locker room, worked out on podcast,' Long said on The Rich Eisen Show. 'Metcalf has not always been the most surgical route runner. You talk about if we end up in a situation where somebody's not on the right side of the 'red line', famously, infamously, I could see some stuff like that happening — and the growing pains being tough.' Metcalf is chomping at the bit to learn from the four-time NFL MVP quarterback. 'Just how cerebral he is and how he views the game,' Metcalf said at minicamp last week. 'I like the way he views the game from a receiver's standpoint, but also from a quarterback's standpoint. I think I can gain a lot of knowledge just from being around him because he's seen a lot of football. Just trying to soak up as much information as I can.' DK Metcalf believes Rodgers' skillset fits his game perfectly. Advertisement 'How quickly he releases the ball and me getting off the line of scrimmage fast is one thing that stands out first,' he said. The two have formed a close bond since their throwing session with each other at UCLA in March. Rodgers raved about Metcalf during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show in April. 'I've had a few conversations with DK and I just think he's a super guy,' Rodgers said. '… I wanted to see how it felt to throw with DK, how the juices felt, and how the ball came out, just all those little things. And also just get to know DK. Like I said, that's a really good human being. From the first conversation I had with them, he was saying 'yes sir' and 'no sir.' Just cause I'm old? No, that's just how he talks. He's just a really respectful dude and an absolute specimen. He's accomplished a lot in the league, and I'm enjoyed getting to know him a little bit, enjoyed throwing to him. What a talented guy he is.' Advertisement Metcalf plans on training with Rodgers in Malibu prior to the start of training camp in late July. 'Yes, sir. We're both based out of California, so yeah,' Metcalf said. 'I planned on getting together with him before, just watching film or just talking ball.' Rodgers and Metcalf are at the honeymoon phase now, but that could change this season when the two face adversity. Metcalf is an emotional player, and Rodgers is certainly not afraid to express his opinion on matters. Alan Saunders contributed reporting for this story.
