Netflix has racked up 15 No. 1 shows in 2025 (so far) — here are the 3 you shouldn't miss

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. We'll soon be halfway through 2025, and that means Netflix has served up an awful lot of new movies and TV shows to watch. If you've not been able to keep up with Netflix's new releases, but want to try and start catching up on all the new shows you've missed out on, I can help. After all, keeping up with what's worth watching on the best streaming services is literally my job. By scanning through a list of shows that have claimed the top spot in the streamer's most-watched charts throughout 2025 so far, I've put together a brief set of recommendations that I think are most deserving of a spot on your watchlist. If you saw me break down the 10 Netflix No. 1 shows of 2025 to my top three choices earlier this year, you can skip ahead to the recommendations. Otherwise, before I move on, I'll quickly explain how I made my choices. To build the initial list, I headed over to Tudum, where Netflix shares its weekly viewing data (available from the start of 2025 through to June 8, at the time of writing). After noting down the 15 shows that have risen to the top spot in a given week, I then whittled that list down to just three picks. Because Netflix only gives us weekly data, I do have a couple of favorites that didn't fit into my criteria — I'd love to be spotlighting 'The Residence' and 'Dept. Q' — but rules are rules. So, with the methodology explained, I'll move on to my top three Netflix No. 1 shows of 2025 (so far) I recommended 'Adolescence' last time around, but I couldn't bring myself to replace it just yet, thanks in no small part to the massive impact the four-part series has had. This powerful limited series sees 'Boiling Point' star Stephen Graham and creator Philip Barantini reuniting to tell the story of a fictional family whose world is turned upside down when their 13-year-old son, Jamie (Owen Cooper), is arrested for the murder of a fellow female pupil. Since its release, 'Adolescence' has become the No. 2 Most Popular English-language TV show (second only to 'Wednesday') and has sparked conversations about young people, healthy relationships and online radicalization. 'Adolescence' isn't just worthy of a mention owing to that impact, though. It's also an expertly crafted and brilliantly performed series in its own right, and one that you shouldn't miss out on. It's not a 'fun' series, as such, but it has lingered in my memory long after streaming it back in March. Watch "Adolescence" on Netflix now If you're into "The White Lotus" brand of shows — TV series that whisk us away to luxury settings, and revolve around enigmatic or off-kilter affluent ensembles, with mysteries or secrets just waiting to come to the fore — then Molly Smith Metzler's glossy dark comedy "Sirens" should be on your radar. Set over Labor Day weekend, "Sirens" sees us following Devon DeWitt (Meghann Fahy) to the lavish estate of socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). She's there because she thinks the Kells have brainwashed her younger sister Simone (Milly Alcock), who resides on-site as Michaela's live-in assistant. The problem is, Michaela proves to be a far more formidable opponent than Devon expected.... It might not have been as well-received as Metzler's previous Netflix creation, "Maid," but "Sirens" remains a worthy watch. It's a dark dramedy that's equal parts intriguing, dramatic, emotional, and, crucially, very funny, and can be powered through in a matter of hours. In my eyes, it's one of Netflix's best new originals of the year. Watch "Sirens" on Netflix now "The Four Seasons" is a hilarious eight-part comedy from Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. The series is based on the 1981 Alan Alda movie of the same name, and sees us accompanying a group of friends played by an impressive cast that includes the likes of Fey, Steve Carell, Will Forte and Colman Domingo. When the gang discovers that one of the three couples is about to call it quits, the entire group is upended by the news. The series plays out across a year and across four vacations, and shows how that decision affects the whole dynamic. It's easy, warm, and witty viewing: what more could you want? Watch "The Four Seasons" on Netflix now Below, you can find the full list of the 15 Netflix series that have been a No. 1 show at some point in 2025 (listed alphabetically). 'Adolescence' 'American Manhunt; O.J. Simpson' 'American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden' 'American Murder: Gabby Petito' 'American Primeval' 'Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing' 'Ginny & Georgia' season 3 'Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer' 'Ransom Canyon' 'Running Point' 'Sirens' 'Squid Game' 'Surviving Black Hawk Down' 'The Four Seasons' 'The Night Agent' season 2 Already streamed all three picks? Does HIQA have sufficient powers?

The recent RTÉ Investigates exposé, on a number of private nursing homes and the fall-out, has raised fresh questions about the extent of HIQA's powers or ability to regulate the sector. A number of important facts emerged from the Oireachtas Health Committee today. Firstly, HIQA said it has no power to fine a nursing home and that cancellation of a home's registration is the "nuclear option". It also said it lacks the authority to go after a parent company, which may own a group of companies, that in turn own a number of nursing homes. HIQA said that recent updates to its regulatory powers, "when fully implemented", will provide powers to investigate specific individual complaints, will mean extra enforcement powers and shorten the timeframe for escalatory actions. Time will tell and these improvements cannot come fast enough to reassure families and residents. We learned today that there are 95 nursing homes under additional restrictive conditions. This is a dynamic situation where restrictions can be imposed and taken away. Many of the homes are run by the HSE, or small stand-alone private homes and not large corporate entities. The big question was why it took RTÉ Current Affairs, rather than HIQA, to uncover the issues at Benevain Manor in Glasnevin and The Residence in Portlaoise. A full HIQA report on the two homes is due to be sent to the Minister for Health and the Minister of State for Older People at the end of the week. The Interim Report found that Beneavin Manor had reported almost 200 incidents related to alleged suspected or confirmed abuse of patients. And The Residence had reported 40 such allegations. HIQA said today around 14% of notifications from Beneavin were moderate risk and that each one was explored. "We don't wait for a television programme for that. We review it," HIQA told the committee. HIQA has sought assurances regarding the other 23 homes than Emeis own. It has also referred matters to An Garda Síochána. HIQA told the committee that 85% of all inspections are unannounced and that in Emeis centres, 91% of inspections were unannounced.

HIQA notified gardaí over concerns about nursing homes in RTÉ exposé

The Health Information Quality Service (HIQA) has notified gardaí about its concerns on the care deficits identified at two nursing homes which recently featured in an RTÉ Investigates programme. The information is contained in an opening statement submitted by HIQA Chief Executive Angela Fitzgerald to the Oireachtas Committee on Health, ahead of her appearance at Leinster House today. HIQA says the two nursing homes - Firstcare Beneavin Manor in Glasnevin and The Residence in Portlaoise - were issued with an official warning of cancellation of registration, should they fail to implement significant improvements in the centres. Ms Fitzgerald says she wants to once again express her "deepest concerns" about what was filmed at the two facilities, adding: "The conduct of staff and the behaviours witnessed were wholly unacceptable in any circumstance." HIQA's Chief Inspector is said to be "addressing these fundamental issues directly with the nursing homes and its parent company, Emeis Ireland, and is engaging in additional escalatory actions". Ms Fitzgerald tells TDs and Senators: "As CEO of HIQA, I met with Emeis Ireland this week with the Chief Inspector and I welcome the immediate actions that they are taking. "We have sought immediate assurances on the other 23 homes that Emeis Ireland own." On the two nursing homes which featured in RTÉ Investigates, there were four HIQA inspections in Firstcare Beneavin Manor and three in The Residence Portlaoise over an 18-month period which raised concerns. The concers raised include inadequate staffing and competence of staff; supervision and management of staff; governance and management issues; recording of key information; inadequate arrangements for meaningful activities for residents. The HIQA Chief Executive says there will also be reform at her authority. "HIQA fully accepts that we also have work to do in relation to reviewing our regulatory process," she says. "We are fully committed to examining what we can learn from recent revelations, and we have commenced work in this regard." Ms Fitzergerald concludes her statement by saying: "The recent RTÉ Investigates was incredibly distressing and I want to apologise to anyone who feels let down by HIQA as the regulator." She added: "What we witnessed in the programme should never have happened, and I hope that this can be a catalyst for change at a number of levels. "I want to assure you that we have taken a number of steps to ensure the safety of residents and will continue to do so."

‘The Residence' series review: Uzo Aduba powers this quirky mystery set in the White House

Remember Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' from Orange Is The Black? That's Primetime Emmy Award winner Uzo Aduba, now portraying Detective Cordelia Cupp in the Netflix series The Residence, produced by Shonda Rhimes. Playing a birder, quirky Cordelia investigates the murder of A.B. Wynter, the White House Chief Usher played by Giancarlo Esposito, during a State Dinner at the White House. She sketches to think and she is capable of solving the unsolvable. She does not let something go, even if it's trivial. Her memory and attention to detail is evident from the fact that she traverses seven seas just to look at one bird. Randall Park portrays Edwin Park, an FBI special agent who's assigned to help Detective Cupp on the case. The series is inspired by the book 'The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House' written by Kate Andersen Brower. With stunningly replicated sets of the White House, whose rooms, carpets and props are all integral to the story, the show was primarily shot in Los Angeles, California, at Raleigh Studios, according to Netflix. Writer Paul William Davies who wanted to pay homage to other creations of the same genre, weaved that into the show by naming each episode in reference to other famous murder mysteries. The comic relief in many instances are cleverly showcased in such a way that it may echo the inner voice of the viewer. The Residence (English) Creator: Paul William Davies Cast: Uzo Aduba, Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Ken Marino, Susan Kelechi Watson Episodes: 8 Run-time: 47-87 minutes Storyline: An avid bird watcher, detective Cordelia Cupp, tries to solve a murder with zero witnesses in the White House The White House staff get more prominence in the show, and it boasts of a diverse cast, including a number of Black actors in supporting roles. The interpersonal dynamics in the show's setting showcases the conflict of worlds between the staff and the presidential family. The peppy background score brings in a certain energy to the funny murder mystery. The twists and turns make the viewer want to keep guessing. Detective Cupp interrogates everyone at the State Dinner after the murder, and it takes forever to figure out the case, even as a Senate committee assembled to investigate. Confident of solving the murder that had zero witnesses and a lot of loose ends, Cupp pauses her questioning to go birdwatching at the WH grounds, as it's in her nature to observe them while analysing the current situation. It also helps her to take it all in when there is a little too much to assess. This whodunnit feels like it was inspired by Knives Out where everyone was a suspect and everyone had a motive to kill the deceased character. While some of the episodes run for long, I feel it was intentional, as it takes forever for a bird watcher to spot the birds. The Residence is a binge-worthy series as the viewer is unable to figure out the killer even in the last few minutes of the last episode. That's how unsolvable it is. The show ends on a high note. Uzo Aduba has stamped her mark again as Detective Cordelia Cupp. 'The Residence' is now streaming on Netflix.
