Scotland boasts some top-notch chip shops all across the country. Here's a look at some of the very best, according to experts at Larder Mag. Landy's Fish and Chips, Edinburgh Old Town This retro-chic chippy brings all the charm of the coast right into the heart of the capital. The team at Landy's prides itself on serving up "proper fish and chips", made the traditional way. Their fresh, flaky fish is fried to crispy perfection in their signature beef dripping, served golden with piping hot chips. And for those fancying something different, they also offer baked, Cajun spiced and even vegan options. You can also tuck into their tapas-inspired treats, including haggis spring rolls, a black pudding Scotch egg and even deep-fried pizza crunch. Dune, St Andrews Owned by Master Chef finalist Dean Banks, Dune's menu is described as a "celebration of the sea, built around the finest local seafood and guided by what's freshest each day." It boasts a more up-market take on chippy scran - offering the likes of a scoop of oscietra caviar, octopus hotdogs and mackerel schnitzel. The Golden Fry: A Beloved Scottish Chippy Hits the Market (1) And its catch of the day is served with a variety of delicious options including seaweed tartare, curry sauce, peas and triple-cooked chips. Or for those who love something a little extra, Dune serves their lobster roll for £12. In fact, the roll, which is served from their outdoor hach, is loved so much by locals that it has become a "cult classic". Bertie's, Edinburgh Old Town Another chippy that impresses in Edinburgh is Bertie's, which is located in the Old Town. It has become a go-to among locals and visitors who love a good classic fish and chips dish. Not only is their battered haddock delicously flaky yet crunchy at the same time, but it is served with perfectly cooked chunky chips. The experts say it is a bright, bustling spot in the heart of the buzzing city, which does justice to the classic meal. The Jigger Inn, St Andrews St Andrews is one place in Scotland that is known for its high-quality fish and chip shops. The picturesque setting and being right on the harbour make it the perfect spot to enjoy a traditional fish supper. And being located near the 17th hole of the iconic Old Course, The Jigger Inn is no different. But what really makes it stand out is that they have their own recipe for their batter. It is made with their own Jigger Ale, which is their special brew that is created for the pub by Belhaven Brewery, and it's only available here. The Grahamston, Glasgow This all-day chippy brings a quirky, contemporary edge to traditional Scottish fish and chips. Their menu is served all day and includes incredibly tasty dishes like a thick-cut, crispy, battered haddock fillet. Even though it costs £18, the standout dish is served with minted peas and tartare sauce. And it's perfect for any type of visit - whether you're stopping quickly for some grub or you want to sit and dine in, this chippy has everything you need. Ochil's Arms, Dollar There's nothing better after a walk through the country than stopping in a cosy, country pub for delicious food. And there's no better place for that than Ochil's Arms, which is located at the bottom of the Ochil Hills. This welcoming pub is known for being ideal for both families looking to enjoy some classic fish and chips as well as hikers looking to fill their bellies with hearty food. It has a relaxed, rural vibe and locals and visitors alike love its fresh haddock, which has a batter that is made using their house Ochils Lager. This lager is brewed for the pub specifically for the pub and is only available in the venue.

It is described as being 'a brekkie to be proud of' on the mornings when 'only Pure Filth will do' CHIP CHIP HOORAY Chippy famous for legendary fish suppers launches first ever breakfast supper Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A SCOTTISH fish and chip shop has launched its first-ever breakfast supper - and fans will be thrilled. Award-winning Cromars in St Andrews, Fife, has created a special morning delight for those who need a little something extra early doors. And its most recent creation is described as being "a brekkie to be proud of" on the mornings when "only Pure Filth will do". Bosses have said the new menu, dubbed the Pure Filthy Breakfast, is perfect for anyone who overdid it the night before or is just crawling home after a night out. They said it's also a tasty option for workers whose jobs require them to get up super early during the wee hours. The new breakfast menu will be served to punters between 9am and 11am almost daily. And the new headline option is the £8.95 Bigger Bites, which is a base of golden hash brown bites, topped with a fried egg, smothered in melted cheese, and loaded with your choice of sauces. A proper St Andrews chippy breakfast for anyone who knows that sometimes only something outrageously filthy will hit the spot Wendy Napthine-Frame It will also include the option of either smoked sausage bits, crispy bacon, or a veggie sausage. The choices of sauces on offer are good old-fashioned brown sauce, tomato ketchup, spicy chipotle mayo or hot creamy horseradish for anyone who fancies something a little bolder. But for those who aren't so keen on something so heavy in the morning, Cromars is also serving classic breakfast rolls. Customers can pick up a bacon, sausage or veggie roll instead if they're looking for something easy. The Golden Fry: A Beloved Scottish Chippy Hits the Market (1) Or those who're looking for something lighter, there's the new 'Boost Your Breakfast Box' for £5.95. This includes a Greek yoghurt with chocolate granola and a Monster Mango Loco yoghurt shake. Bosses say this is the "ultimate morning wake-up call", adding: "Still Cromars. Just that little bit cleaner!" Wendy Napthine-Frame, owner of Cromars, said: 'We've built our reputation on serving great-tasting food with a side of fun and banter. Flavour-packed dishes are what we're known for. Our new 'Pure Filth Breakfast' is no exception – it's big, bold and gloriously indulgent Wendy Napthine-Frame "At Cromars, we don't take ourselves too seriously – but we do take our food seriously. "Fresh fish, top-quality ingredients and flavour-packed dishes are what we're known for. "Our new 'Pure Filth Breakfast' is no exception – it's big, bold and gloriously indulgent. "A proper St Andrews chippy breakfast for locals, students, workers and visitors to St Andrews, really anyone who knows that sometimes only something outrageously filthy will hit the spot.' It's not the first time that Wendy has hit headlines because of her incredible creations. In May last year, Cromars launched a special menu for dogs to become Scotland's first canine-friendly chippy. The menu includes £2 beef sausages and £1.50 'puppucinnos' - whipped cream that is usually served in an espresso-sized cup or a small bowl. It also offers free dog biscuits, and 50 per cent of sales from the canine meals will be donated to the SSPCA. Wendy said the menu was inspired by the amount of customers who visit the eatery with their four-legged friends. The businesswoman, who also has three dogs of her own, also wanted to help owners enjoy their suppers in peace by offering pet meals. AWARD-WINNING CHIPPY Cromars was established in 2013 and is one of Scotland's best-loved fish and chip shops. It specialises in making the very best fish and chips, adhering to three key pillars of quality: fish is only ever cooked to order, only the very best 'angel cut' Haddock is used, caught from the North Sea, and locally sourced ingredients. Cromars Classic Fish and Chips in St Andrews is multi-award-winning for the quality of its fish and chips. It ws crowned 'Best Fish Supper on the East Coast of Scotland' at the 2023 Scotland's Fish & Chip Awards. Cromars' owner, Wendy Napthine-Frame, has fishing in her blood. Born and raised in Peterhead, the largest landing port for fish in the UK, with a large extended family all working in the fishing industry either on boats or in the markets, Wendy has an innate understanding of what constitutes the best quality fish, along with the connections to source the very best that Scotland has to offer. Wendy regularly takes a 'fry' around to the homes of friends and family. Forget wine, chocolate or flowers, a fry is a box of the very best fish to eat as a treat. At the time, she said: "We are a nation of dog lovers. I have three dogs myself, so I know how much people love them and want them around as part of the family. "We see so many people travelling with their dogs now, especially as we come into the summer season, when the city is teeming with tourists and visitors. 'We are blessed in St Andrews with wonderful beaches and countryside, offering perfect walks for dogs and their owners, and for years Cromars has welcomed them all afterwards for a fish supper. 'I've often thought we should create a special menu for dogs, not least so that owners can eat our award-winning fish and chips in peace. "Without the pleading eyes and the nose-nudges that as dog owners we all understand! 'So, we have done just that with the introduction of our new menu, which is catering for doggies and doing good by helping support the tremendous work that the SSPCA does in Scotland.' 5 The latest creation has been called the 'Pure Filth Breakfast' Credit: FACEBOOK: CROMARS

No seaside towns make the cut for the cheapest chippies BEST PLAICE Scotland's cheapest area for a chippy revealed with fish and chips costing less than £10 Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SCOTLAND'S cheapest area for a chippy has been revealed - where fish and chips cost less than £10. Ahead of National Fish & Chip Day on June 6, WDW Bingo crunched the numbers to uncover the UK's cheapest - and most expensive -places to enjoy this beloved British classic. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Scotland's cheapest area for a chippy has been revealed Credit: Alamy Researchers analysed thousands of menus for traditional fish and chip shops in over 50 locations across the UK. Their data reveals where your money goes furthest for a portion of fish and chips. Manchester tops the list as the most budget-friendly spot for a portion of fish and chips, averaging just £8.94. Walsall (£9.17) and Dundee (£9.47) round out the top three, coming in second and third place, respectively. Other affordable spots include Derby (£9.70), Bradford (£9.87) and Stoke-on-Trent (£9.88), all offering classic chippy fare for under a tenner. Scotland's second city, Glasgow, makes the list at number 10 with an average price of £10.37. Close behind Glasgow is Aberdeen (£10.67) and Edinburgh (£10.93). Harrison Score, Head of WDW Bingo, said: "Fish and chips are more than just a meal – they're a national institution. Whether you're paying under a tenner in Manchester or splashing out in Exeter, it's a dish enjoyed by generations across the UK. "At WDW Bingo, we know all about chasing the best odds – and when it comes to value for your fish supper, it pays to know where your chances are highest of bagging a low-cost meal. "The data shows that the North dominates the top 10 cheap eat locations for this iconic dish. It's also interesting that no seaside towns make the cut for cheaper chippies." The Golden Fry: A Beloved Scottish Chippy Hits the Market (1) It comes days after Scotland's best fish and chip shop was crowned in this year's annual takeaway awards. Coming out top in the chippy category was Sea Salt and Sole in Aberdeen. The takeaway, which has four locations in the city and surrounding area, commits to sourcing its haddock daily to provide customers with a fresh, delicious fish supper from sustainable suppliers.

A portion of hot fish and chips from your local chippy, or enjoyed by the seaside, is an absolute must for a weekend treat or while on a staycation. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 People are only just realising that fish & chip shop vinegar ISN'T vinegar Credit: Alamy And for most people, the experience wouldn't be complete without jazzing up their chips with a sprinkle of salt and a splash of vinegar. However, people are only just discovering that the vinegar used at fish and chip shops isn't actually vinegar, and the revelation has left many minds blown. Instead, these shops use a cheaper alternative that legally cannot be called vinegar. This substitute is known as a 'non-brewed condiment' and is made from acetic acid, water, and colouring. And before you start thinking fish and chip shops are ripping you off, it's worth knowing that there are some practical benefits to using this alternative. The non-brewed condiment is halal, as it doesn't contain any alcohol since there's no malt involved in its production. It's also gluten-free, making it suitable for those with dietary restrictions. Additionally, it can often be purchased in concentrate form, which makes it easier to store and transport, reducing costs for shops. There are also strict rules in place to ensure customers aren't misled. Legally, the non-brewed condiment cannot be labelled as vinegar, nor can it be poured into bottles labelled as vinegar to avoid any deception. The Golden Fry: A Beloved Scottish Chippy Hits the Market (1) This debate was ignited after LadBible shared an Instagram post explaining the difference. They wrote: 'What you're usually getting is something called non-brewed condiment, which is a cheaper, vinegar-flavoured alternative made from acetic acid, water, and colouring. 'It looks and tastes like the real deal, but it's not legally allowed to be called vinegar because it isn't brewed from alcohol.' The post quickly sparked a lively discussion, with many people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts on the revelation. Another added: 'Sorry but chippy 'vinegar' is the best, even if my whole life has been a lie.' Meanwhile, someone else commented: 'That's why you never ask for salt and vinegar and put the proper stuff on at home!'
