NHL trade rumors: Evander Kane likely on the move as Oilers explore major shake-up after Stanley Cup loss

Oilers are considering trading Evander Kane to free up cap space (Getty Images) After a crushing loss in the Stanley Cup Final, the Edmonton Oilers now face what could be their most pivotal offseason in years — and all signs point to big changes. Among them, star winger Evander Kane may soon be on the move as the franchise looks to create much-needed salary cap space. Evander Kane emerges as top trade candidate in Edmonton's reshuffle According to NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Kane's name has surfaced as a likely trade chip, just days after the Oilers' defeat to the Florida Panthers. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pagnotta reported: 'Also on Oilers, in an effort to create additional salary cap space, I wouldn't be shocked to see the names of Evander Kane (16-team trade list) and Viktor Arvidsson (full NMC) pop up in the trade market this month.' Kane, who carries a $5.125 million cap hit, has one season remaining on the four-year, $20.5 million extension he signed in 2022. With Edmonton's depth faltering during the Finals, Kane's inconsistent playoff production may have tipped the scales toward parting ways — despite his value as a physical, top-six forward. Oilers have limited cap space and major contracts to address The Oilers enter the 2025 offseason with under $12 million in available cap space and a growing list of free agents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No dark spots, 10 years younger! Meanwhile, Connor McDavid becomes eligible for an extension on July 1 — a storyline that could dominate NHL headlines for months. Keeping both McDavid and Leon Draisaitl happy and convinced they can win in Edmonton is a top priority. That likely means surrounding them with a deeper, more reliable supporting cast — even if it comes at the cost of moving on from well-known names like Kane and Arvidsson. Florida outclassed the Oilers from the start of the series, and the loss exposed serious flaws in Edmonton's depth. While stars like McDavid and Draisaitl remain untouchable, few others on the roster can say the same. This offseason isn't just about cap gymnastics — it's about saving Edmonton's championship window. East Playoff Team Expected to Take 'Massive Swing' at Signing Mitch Marner

East Playoff Team Expected to Take 'Massive Swing' at Signing Mitch Marner originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mitch Marner has spent his entire nine-year NHL career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Markham, Ontario, native was drafted fourth overall by his hometown team in 2015 and has given everything to the franchise, recording 221 goals, 520 assists and 741 points. Advertisement However, since entering the league in the 2016-17 NHL season, the Leafs have made it past the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs only twice, losing both times in the second round. A big change is needed to get over the hump. With Marner's six-year contract set to expire this summer, all signs point to him leaving the organization. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner (16).Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images With July 1 nearing quickly, The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta revealed that the Carolina Hurricanes are one team expected to take a "massive swing" at signing Marner if the Leafs officially decide to let him walk. "When/if Mitch Marner hits the open market July 1, the expectation is the Carolina Hurricanes are going to take a massive swing to try and sign him," Pagnotta said. "Sources say we shouldn't be surprised if they go above $14M on an AAV over a 7-year term. UFA market opens in 18 days." Advertisement The Hurricanes are coming off their second Eastern Conference Final appearance in the past three seasons, but it's clear they need more to reach the Stanley Cup Final. Across nine conference final games in those two playoff runs, they are 1-8. That's not going to cut it, but adding a player like Marner could be the answer. Raleigh is a much smaller market compared to Toronto, and he won't be under the microscope like he was in his hometown. NHL Trade Rumors: Teams eye Mika Zibanejad as Rangers weigh surprise trade option (Image via Getty) David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has brought a huge update regarding Mika Zibanejad. Despite Zibanejad having a no-move clause in his deal, Pagnotta states some teams might still attempt to acquire him. The New York Rangers would have to get Mika Zibanejad's permission prior to any trade. He has complete authority wherever he goes. But following another playoff defeat, some think changes might ensue. Pagnotta describes this as the potential surprise of the offseason. Mika Zibanejad's playoff performance and a contract could spark big offseason decision Mika Zibanejad is among the top performers for the New York Rangers since he arrived with them in 2016. He is a center who scores frequently. He also assists his teammates by providing assists. In the regular season, he is extremely consistent. But in the 2024 playoffs, he did not score enough. People were disappointed, and most pundits stated that top players should deliver in big games. Mika Zibanejad's deal is big and goes several more years. It also has a no-move clause. That is, he cannot be traded unless he is willing to be. But from Pagnotta, teams can still call the Rangers and inquire. If the Rangers need to clear some salary cap room, they can contact Mika Zibanejad and see if he would consider moving. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Clean Warehouses = Safe Workplaces SearchMore Learn More Undo That does not guarantee a trade will occur. But it indicates the Rangers are considering making some difficult choices. They need space in the budget to acquire young players like Alexis Lafreniere and to create improved depth in the lineup. Chris Kreider is another elite player who has a long contract. He has played for the Rangers for more than 10 years and is extremely loyal to them. But if the Rangers seek a new face, he could also be asked about a potential trade. Kaapo Kakko is another name to consider. He is still young and has not scored too many goals. His name comes up when trade rumors begin. He may be included in a trade if the Rangers want to make some new additions. Teams in need of power centers, such as the Boston Bruins or Colorado Avalanche, may be calling on Zibanejad. Despite a no-trade clause some trades occur if the player happens to agree. This is one story that will be worth following throughout the coming weeks.

While nothing is final yet, it looks like both sides are working toward an agreement that would keep the forward in Florida beyond next season. — nhlrumourreport (@nhlrumourreport) After being transferred from the Calgary Flames, Sam Bennett, 28, has been with the Panthers starting in 2021. Florida's playoff runs depend greatly on his powerful two-way play and physicality. If no new agreement is signed, he becomes a possible free agent when his present contract expires following the 2024-2025 season. Pagnotta said, 'It sounds like there's been some traction on a contract extension,' which suggests that talks are serious. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? NHL Insider Links Panthers to Mitch Marner in Bold Pre-Free Agency Move

NHL Insider Links Panthers to Mitch Marner in Bold Pre-Free Agency Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Speculation continues to swirl around the future of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner. An unexpected report brought a new possible destination to the table. Advertisement The 28-year-old winger is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and multiple sources have indicated that Toronto is weighing scenarios to recoup value before his departure. Among the options being discussed is a sign-and-trade arrangement, in which the Maple Leafs would sign Marner to an eight-year contract and immediately flip him to a team of his choosing. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, this outcome is unlikely but not off the table. A "plausible" scenario, in Pagnotta's words, would involve Toronto trading Marner's negotiating rights before July 1 to give another team a head start in talks. On Saturday, Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects fueled Pagnotta's beliefs with a report confirming there's "real smoke" about the Florida Panthers' interest in Marner. Advertisement Robinson reported that Florida is "gearing up to make a run" at Marner, even before he reaches free agency. "There's real smoke that the Florida Panthers could be gearing up to make a run at Marner," Robinson wrote. "Word is that Toronto has opened the door to a sign-and-trade scenario, where they ink Marner to a max-term extension (eight years) and then flip him to recoup some level of value." Toronto, having Marner's negotiating rights, is the only franchise that can add an extra year to the winger's extension, making it eight years long instead of the seven-year deal all other 31 franchises can offer him. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner (16) and Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk (19) exchange words after a 2023 Stanley Cup Playoff Hamilton-Imagn Images Marner, who posted a career-high 102 points this past season, is expected to reach the market to evaluate all options on the table, and he's not publicly committed to either leaving or returning to Toronto. Advertisement Pagnotta noted that an extension is far less likely than with fellow veteran forward and pending free agent John Tavares. Robinson confirm that belief in his report. "The Leafs know that Marner is all but assured to leave," Robinson wrote. "For the acquiring team, moving a draft pick to avoid a bidding war is a very palatable cost. Whether Marner is keen for that route is another thing." Regarding other potential offers, Robinson quoted one source close to the matter, saying, 'That Marner to LA report is pure rubbish,' with regards to the Los Angeles Kings being one of the most-linked teams to the Maple Leafs star.
