Chris Brown pleads not guilty in London nightclub assault case

June 20 (UPI) -- R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty Friday to assault charges related to an act of violence at a London nightclub. Brown entered the plea at Southwark Crown Court in London, and the judge then adjourned the arraignment, which moves the next step of the case to July before a trial set for October of 2026. Brown allegedly attacked music producer Abraham Diaw in February of 2023 with a bottle of tequila at Tape nightclub in London. He was arrested in May on charges related to the incident of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and was then held in custody for almost a week before being released on $6.7 million bail. Co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, who performs under the name HoodyBaby, also pleaded not guilty Friday at the court to a charge of attempted grievous bodily harm in the same case. Under conditions of his bail, Brown must reside in the United Kingdom until his trial, and had his passport confiscated by police. The bail conditions do allow him to tour and perform, meaning he can have his passport for travel to shows. The Grammy Award-winning musician is currently taking part in his Breezy Bowl XX world tour and performed Sunday night in the British city of Manchester, at which he reportedly acknowledged fans for their support before also thanking the jail where he was held. "It was really nice," he told the crowd of his time in custody. Brown is next scheduled to perform at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. Chris Brown pleads not guilty to alleged bottle attack at London nightclub

Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) after an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub in 2023. The 36-year-old singer is accused of assaulting the music producer Abraham Diaw at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023 in an incident that has been described as "unprovoked" by prosecutors. Brown also faces charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and having an offensive weapon in the form of a tequila bottle relating to the same incident and both charges were added to his indictment ahead of Friday morning's (20.06.25) hearing at Southwark Crown Court - which came just hours after he had performed at Cardiff's Principality Stadium as part of his Breezy Bowl XX World Tour. The Beautiful People hitmaker will return to court on July 11 to enter pleas to those charges before facing trial on October 26, 2026. Brown confirmed his name and date of birth at the hearing before entering his plea, stating: "Not guilty ma'am." The music star's co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu - an American national who performs under the name HoodyBaby - also entered a not guilty plea to the charge of grievous bodily harm. Brown was arrested in Manchester last month after his arrival in the UK to prepare for a series of European dates on his world tour . The R+B star was held in custody for nearly a week before he was released after agreeing to pay a £5 million security fee to the court. The security fee is a financial guarantee to ensure he returns to court and Brown could be asked to forfeit the money should he breach his bail conditions. Judge Tony Baumgartner confirmed that the singer would be allowed to continue his world tour and the UK leg started last weekend. During his gig in Manchester last Sunday (15.06.25), Brown thanked fans "for coming and supporting me". The Go Crazy singer quipped: "And thank you to the jail. It was really nice." Brown's tour - which marks the 20th anniversary of his eponymous debut album - continues with two gigs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London this weekend and his next court hearing will take place once the European dates are complete.

Chris Brown pleads not guilty to ‘bottle attack' charge

R&B singer Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to attempting to cause grievous bodily harm in an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub. The American musician, 36, is accused of attempting to unlawfully and maliciously cause grievous bodily harm with intent to Abraham Diaw at the Tape venue, a private members' club in Hanover Square, Mayfair, on February 19 2023. Brown confirmed his name and date of birth before entering his plea, saying: 'Not guilty ma'am' during the plea and trial preparation hearing at Southwark Crown Court. His co-defendant, US national Omololu Akinlolu, who turned 39 on Friday, denied the same charge. Both defendants are further charged with assaulting Mr Diaw occasioning him actual bodily harm, with Brown also facing one count of having an offensive weapon – a bottle – in a public place. They were not asked to enter pleas to those charges with a further court hearing set for July 11. Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, defending Brown, told the court it has been difficult to discuss matters with her client while he is working. Around 20 people sat in the public gallery behind the dock for Friday's hearing, many of them fans of the singer. A date for a five to seven-day trial was set for October 26 2026. Brown had arrived at around 9am to a large group of photographers outside court, and walked in silence to the building's entrance. The Go Crazy singer, who was able to continue with his scheduled international tour after he was freed on conditional bail last month, performed in Cardiff on Thursday night. He had to pay a £5 million security fee to the court as part of the bail agreement, which is a financial guarantee to ensure a defendant returns to court and may be forfeited if they breach bail conditions. Manchester Magistrates' Court heard last month that Mr Diaw was standing at the bar of the Tape nightclub when he was struck several times with a bottle, and then pursued to a separate area of the nightclub where he was punched and kicked repeatedly. Brown was arrested at Manchester's Lowry Hotel at 2am on May 15 by detectives from the Metropolitan Police. He is said to have flown into Manchester Airport on a private jet in preparation for the UK tour dates. Brown was released from HMP Forest Bank in Salford, Greater Manchester, on May 21. Shortly after being released from prison, Brown posted an Instagram story referencing his upcoming tour.
