Chris Brown pleads not guilty in London nightclub assault case
June 20 (UPI) -- R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty Friday to assault charges related to an act of violence at a London nightclub.
Brown entered the plea at Southwark Crown Court in London, and the judge then adjourned the arraignment, which moves the next step of the case to July before a trial set for October of 2026.
Brown allegedly attacked music producer Abraham Diaw in February of 2023 with a bottle of tequila at Tape nightclub in London. He was arrested in May on charges related to the incident of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and was then held in custody for almost a week before being released on $6.7 million bail.
Co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, who performs under the name HoodyBaby, also pleaded not guilty Friday at the court to a charge of attempted grievous bodily harm in the same case.
Under conditions of his bail, Brown must reside in the United Kingdom until his trial, and had his passport confiscated by police. The bail conditions do allow him to tour and perform, meaning he can have his passport for travel to shows.
The Grammy Award-winning musician is currently taking part in his Breezy Bowl XX world tour and performed Sunday night in the British city of Manchester, at which he reportedly acknowledged fans for their support before also thanking the jail where he was held.
"It was really nice," he told the crowd of his time in custody.
Brown is next scheduled to perform at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

When Lizzo sang, 'Turn up the music, let's celebrate,' Donald Trump's widely protested military birthday parade was not what she had in mind. After video of a performer singing Lizzo's Billboard Hot 100-topping hit 'About Damn Time' at the event in Washington, D.C., on Saturday (June 14) surfaced online, the hitmaker made her feelings quite clear in a TikTok posted over the weekend. Stitching the clip with a few seconds of footage of the parade singer's breathless live rendition of the self-love anthem — performed in front of a gathering on the National Mall — Lizzo then cuts to a shot of herself staring pointedly at the camera, looking perplexed and disgusted. The choice to cover the Grammy-winning hit at Trump's procession was certainly an interesting one, though, as Lizzo — who endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election — has made her disapproval of the twice-impeached POTUS very clear over the years. She's not the only one. While Trump was celebrating the U.S. Army's 250th birthday — as well as his own 79th birthday, which was also Saturday — through a grand show of military might in D.C., a slew of 'No Kings' gatherings broke out across the country in protest of his administration. Those overlapped with the ongoing protests in Los Angeles against the country's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which recently launched raids into multiple workplaces across the city in the name of alleged immigration violations. Lizzo also posted several times about the ICE raids on Bluesky a few days prior to her TikTok about the military parade. The Church Studio, an Oklahoma recording studio where Sartain's wife, Mary Jo, volunteers, announced his death Friday. Deadline said Sartain was battling an unspecified illness, but a specific cause of death was not shared. "I knew he wasn't in good health and hadn't been for a while," fellow Hee Haw alum Victoria Hallman told TMZ. "We always fool ourselves that people will hang on." In a tribute on Instagram, Church Studio said Sartain was "an extraordinary actor, artist and comedian." He began working on the variety show Hee Haw in 1972, and his other credits include Texas Ranger, Nashville, The Buddy Holly Story, The Outsiders, Fried Green Tomatoes, The Big Easy and The Hollywood Knights.
