Sanitary workers clean sewer lines without safety gear in Pallipalayam municipality
NAMAKKAL: Sanitary workers were reportedly seen cleaning blocked sewer lines without wearing protective gear in Pallipalayam municipality in Salem district. After recent rain, several areas in the municipality faced issues with blocked sewer lines. Sewer-mixed rainwater overflowed in several areas. The municipality sent sanitation workers to resolve these blockages. However, sanitary workers were working under unsafe conditions without wearing gloves and other protective gear, residents said. "The Tamil Nadu govt has been advised by the courts, including the Madras high court, on multiple occasions to train sanitary workers to utilise appropriate safety gear when handling waste," said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) spokesman Dr PV Senthil. However, the recommendations were not followed, he said. 'Given the current inability to differentiate between hazardous and non-hazardous waste in public spaces, there is an increasing concern about the potential risks this poses to sanitary workers,' he added. 'People suffering from diseases are likely to spit in public areas. Sanitary workers contract diseases when they use bare hands to remove blocks," Senthil remarked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indian Stewardess Makes Headlines Worldwide medalmerit Learn More Undo Senthil urged the Pallipalayam municipality to educate its sanitary workers on the importance of using proper safety gear. The State will neither forgive nor forget ‘anti-Tamil Nadu policies' of BJP, says TNCC president Selvaperunthagai
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Monday responded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that a BJP-AIADMK government would be formed in the State in 2026, saying the State would neither forget nor forgive the 'anti-Tamil Nadu policies' of the BJP-led government at the Centre. He said a BJP government in Tamil Nadu would always remain a 'mirage'. In a statement, he termed as hypocritical Mr. Shah's remarks that he regretted he couldn't speak Tamil. '...what better proof is needed of the government's betrayal than the fact that it had allocated only ₹24 crore over three years for Classical Tamil, while granting ₹664 crore for Sanskrit, a language spoken by only 24,000 people? How will Mr. Shah answer for depriving Tamil Nadu of ₹2,152 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan as a punishment for opposing Hindi imposition through the National Education Policy? Since 1968, Tamil Nadu has followed the two-language policy of Tamil and English,' he said. As for Mr. Shah's claims about the grant of more funds to Tamil Nadu, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said, 'According to official data, in the past seven years, the BJP-led government at the Centre has collected ₹7.38 lakh crore in direct taxes, the GST, and cesses from Tamil Nadu, but returned only ₹2.56 lakh crore to the State. After exploiting Tamil Nadu financially, what evidence does Mr. Shah have to prove his claim that more funds have been given to the State?'

Centre has diverted funds due to Tamil Nadu to other states: TNCC chief
COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai on Saturday accused the BJP-led central govt of collecting taxes from Tamil Nadu without releasing the corresponding funds to the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He condemned the Centre's move to reduce Lok Sabha seats in south India under the guise of constituency delimitation. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport on Saturday, Selvaperunthagai alleged that funds due to Tamil Nadu were being withheld and diverted to other states. 'Why the BJP govt, which exploits the blood and sweat of the people of Tamil Nadu, has not released funds for school education or disaster relief,' he asked. He accused the Centre of showing a stepmotherly attitude towards the state. The TNCC chief said the proposed delimitation would adversely affect southern states and it could render southern votes and parliamentary representation insignificant if carried out as the BJP desired. He warned that northern MPs would dominate decision-making, leaving little or no voice for the south. Commenting on Union home minister Amit Shah's visit to Madurai, he alleged that it was an attempt to create confusion and gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu. However, he asserted that such efforts would fail, as the people clearly understood the BJP's intentions. He reiterated that there was no place for the BJP or the RSS in the state.

Centre deliberately denying funds to T.N., says TNCC president
The Union Government is deliberately denying funds to Tamil Nadu, said K. Selvaperunthagai, president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee here on Saturday. The Centre was acting in a partisan manner even in sanctioning disaster relief funds and all the funds are getting diverted to the BJP-ruled States. The Centre was resorting to the tactics of denying funds to opposition-ruled States and thereby diverting those funds to the BJP-ruled States, he said. Accusing the Centre of treating the non-BJP ruled States in a step-motherly manner, he said that be it GST or the ₹2,500 crore aid due to the State School Education Department, the Centre was acting with an intention. On Amit Shah taking part in Lord Muruga conference at Madurai, he wondered how is it different from the recent one that was conducted at Palani in Dindigul district and dubbed these tactics as cheap politics aimed at keeping people in constant fear. On the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats, he said that the BJP is reducing the constituencies in the South and increasing it in the North so that all the political decisions can be taken with the help of North Indian MPs.

Governor must apologise for belittling T.N.'s educational standards: TNCC chief
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai on Wednesday criticised Governor R. N. Ravi for belittling the education development and quality of education in Tamil Nadu, which is one of the States to excel in terms of education and literacy in the country. He demanded an apology from the Governor to the people of Tamil Nadu. In a statement, he questioned about what the Governor knew about the quality of education in Tamil Nadu, further adding his comment that it was not just enough to study but that one must possess knowledge and talent was ridiculous. 'Many of the government-run universities in Tamil Nadu like Anna University, Madras University, Bharathiar University have received 'A' or 'A+' grade certificates from the National Assessment and Accreditation Agency. In the last five years, more than 35,000 doctorates have been awarded in Tamil Nadu government universities alone based on quality research. These universities conduct research under UGC guidelines,' he said. Mr. Selvaperunthagai further pointed out that Tamil Nadu has been rated as one of the best States in the 'Quality Education' category in the NITI Aayog Sustainable Development Goals Index India list (2020-21). In the School Education Quality Index (SEQI), Tamil Nadu government is leading the way in the quality of education, role of teachers, and development of students in schools.' 'The Governor should immediately withdraw this insulting statement and apologise to the people of Tamil Nadu. Otherwise, we warn that the Opposition against him through democratic means will only grow stronger,' he said.
