Governor must apologise for belittling T.N.'s educational standards: TNCC chief

The Hindu04-06-2025

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai on Wednesday criticised Governor R. N. Ravi for belittling the education development and quality of education in Tamil Nadu, which is one of the States to excel in terms of education and literacy in the country. He demanded an apology from the Governor to the people of Tamil Nadu.
In a statement, he questioned about what the Governor knew about the quality of education in Tamil Nadu, further adding his comment that it was not just enough to study but that one must possess knowledge and talent was ridiculous.
'Many of the government-run universities in Tamil Nadu like Anna University, Madras University, Bharathiar University have received 'A' or 'A+' grade certificates from the National Assessment and Accreditation Agency. In the last five years, more than 35,000 doctorates have been awarded in Tamil Nadu government universities alone based on quality research. These universities conduct research under UGC guidelines,' he said.
Mr. Selvaperunthagai further pointed out that Tamil Nadu has been rated as one of the best States in the 'Quality Education' category in the NITI Aayog Sustainable Development Goals Index India list (2020-21). In the School Education Quality Index (SEQI), Tamil Nadu government is leading the way in the quality of education, role of teachers, and development of students in schools.'
'The Governor should immediately withdraw this insulting statement and apologise to the people of Tamil Nadu. Otherwise, we warn that the Opposition against him through democratic means will only grow stronger,' he said.

Lord Murugan will annihilate BJP in '26 polls: TNCC president Selvaperunthagai

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai launched a scathing attack on the BJP, accusing the party of promoting communal politics and undermining Tamil identity. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore airport on Sunday, he said, 'Tamil God Murugan will perform a 'Soorasamharam' (divine annihilation) of the BJP in the 2026 Assembly elections.' He accused the BJP of trying to manipulate religious sentiments for political gain, particularly through the recent announcement of the 'Murugan maanadu' in Madurai. 'Why is there a need for such a conference? Just like they politicised Lord Ram in Ayodhya, they are now trying to do the same with Murugan in Tamil Nadu. Even Lord Ram has distanced himself from the BJP. Lord Murugan belongs to Tamil soil and will reject those who betray Tamil values.' Selvaperunthagai also criticised the BJP-led central government for attempting to impose Hindi and a three-language policy in Tamil Nadu. 'Under Congress, we upheld the two-language policy. Now, the BJP is trying to push a third language. They won't let people worship in Tamil and want Sanskrit-only rituals. How can Tamil God Murugan accept this?' he asked.

Operation Sindoor was swift and precise, says Governor R.N. Ravi

Operation Sindoor will go down in history as a 'war' that achieved its goal, Governor R.N. Ravi said here on Sunday. The war was precise and swift, he added, calling it a watershed moment for India. 'The 88-hour 'war' could have ended earlier, but for Pakistan, which escalated it. We only wanted to teach them a lesson. We exercised restraint by attacking terror camps alone. The absolute clarity at the political, policy, and execution level was a rare combination that enabled us to achieve success,' he said, adding that India was only responding to the terror attack on innocent civilians at Pahalgam in Kashmir. By destroying Pakistan's critical air bases and making them non-operational, India had dealt a blow to Pakistan's efforts. Unlike the wars fought by Ukraine and Russia, and Iran and Israel, India's was precise and swift, he said. India had busted the claim that terrorists functioned autonomously, Mr. Ravi said, adding that there was no distinction between terrorists and Pakistan military. He said the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, which was 'unfair' to India, was a bold move. Mr. Ravi said Tamil Nadu was known for its contribution to Indian military and praised the defence industry for its efforts. The dynamics of war had changed with more unmanned vehicles being deployed. The IIT-M could use its talent to improve the number of patents they register in a year and help the country, he added. He honoured senior officers of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, and praised IIT-M for its work on defence technology. Earlier, Karanbir Singh Brar, Lieutenant-General and General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Dakshin Bharat area in Chennai, recalled his experiences as a GOC in Balakot. The success of the operation depended on the professionalism of the people behind it. The attack on Pakistan was punitive. There was a new normal after the attack, he said. 'As far as Indian Armed Forces are concerned, it is a serious matter and we don't make noise. We made sure that the war was terminated on our term,' he said. Mr. Brar said the damage to Pakistan was there for all to see, and that India did not suffer damage was clear as the allies of Pakistan had not been able to produce any proof of damage, he said. A video film of Operation Sindoor and the damages to Pakistan airbases was also screened.

T.N. Governor has not changed despite Supreme Court verdict, is sitting on Kalaignar University Bill: CM Stalin

Stating that Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi is yet to give assent to the Bill adopted by the State Assembly proposing the establishment of Kalaignar University at Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Monday (June 16, 2025) observed that Mr. Ravi has not changed even after the Supreme Court verdict (on the Governor's powers to grant assent to Bills). The decision to name the new university after the former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was taken by the elected MLAs, cutting across party lines, on the floor of the Legislative Assembly. The Bill was adopted unanimously and was sent to the Governor for his assent. But even after 40 days, the Governor has not given his assent till now, despite several reminders, Mr. Stalin said, while speaking at a government function in Thanjavur. The Chief Minister said attempts to take up the matter with the Governor through the Minister for Higher Education did not materialise as the Governor is yet to grant an appointment for the Minister. Had the Governor granted assent to the Bill, the foundation stone for the new university could have been laid today along with other new projects. 'We will wait with patience; if we run out of patience, we will force the Governor to give in,' Mr. Stalin asserted. The State government was executing its duties without fail, despite the Union government's partiality in allocation of funds, Mr. Stalin said. He announced that a new scheme, christened, Ungaludan Stalin would be launched on July 15, wherein special camps would be organised to receive petitions from the public and take government schemes and services to the doorstep of the people . While 3,768 camps would be organised in urban areas, 6,232 camps would be held in rural areas. Women eligible to avail assistance under the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai scheme can submit their applications at the camps. A team of volunteers would be visiting every household to guide the people on how to apply for the welfare and other schemes implemented by the government and guide them in filing applications and uploading documents to be submitted to avail the benefits, he added. Making a special reference to the Sarasvati Mahal Library in Thanjavur, the Chief Minister said sufficient funds would be allotted in addition to the allocation of ₹75 lakhs per annum for the upkeep of manuscripts and other treasures at the library and creation of additional infrastructure facilities apart from ensuring distribution of pension to the retired staff. The library's heritage buildings would be renovated by the Public Works Department at a cost of ₹12.50 crore. Mr. Stalin announced that the kuruvai special package scheme would be implemented in the delta districts at an outlay of ₹82.77 crore. He inaugurated 2,461 projects implemented at a cost of ₹3,25.96 crore in Thanjavur district, laid foundations for 4,127 projects worth ₹309.48 crore and distributed assistance under various welfare schemes to the tune of ₹558.43 crore to 2,25,383 beneficiaries in Thanjavur district.
