Sweden Democrats to Push for Total Migration Halt in 2026 Election

The Sweden Democrats have announced they will campaign in the 2026 general election on a pledge to stop migration to the country. In an op-ed for Svenska Dagbladet published on Wednesday, party leader Jimmie Åkesson and migration policy spokesperson Ludvig Aspling said Sweden's national security must take precedence over the right to asylum, marking a hardening of the party's already tough stance on immigration. 'Sweden's safety must come first — even when it conflicts with the right of asylum,' Åkesson wrote in a Facebook post linking to the article. 'Before the 2026 election, we will therefore demand that Sweden be given the opportunity to completely stop migration.' The article itself proceeds to criticize the foundation of the European Union's asylum system, calling it flawed because it deprives individual member states of the right to determine how many asylum seekers they admit. The nationalist duo suggests that the current rights-based asylum regime, which sets no theoretical upper limit on the number of people who can be granted protection so long as they meet the legal criteria, is not fit for purpose.

Don't send nudes: Sweden bans buying online sexual services

The Swedish parliament has voted through a new law criminalising the purchase of custom-made porn videos via sites such as OnlyFans. Advertisement Under the updated prostitution law, users can still view and purchase pre-made videos and material, but it will be illegal for someone to request and pay for someone to do a specific act. "This is a new form of sex purchases and it is high time that we modernise the Sex Purchase Act, and that we also include purchases that take place remotely on digital platforms such as OnlyFans," Teresa Carvalho, a Social Democrat lawmaker, told broadcaster TV4. Sweden's law on prostitution bans only the buying, not the selling, of sex. The bill had widespread support in Sweden's parliament, but it was criticised by some of those making a living by producing content for OnlyFans, saying it will hurt their income. "It feels like the politicians don't really understand what we work with digitally or actually do," one OnlyFans creator, Sanna Zentio, told TV4 in March. "Many of us are working very independently and safely," she said. Advertisement Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer argued that the amended law was a natural extension of Sweden's prostitution regulations. "Basically, the idea is that anyone who buys sexual acts performed remotely should be penalised in the same way as those who buy sexual acts involving physical contact," Strommer told the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

Swedish diplomat spy suspect has died, his lawyer says

STOCKHOLM: A Swedish diplomat who was recently questioned by police on suspicion of espionage has died, the man's lawyer said on Friday. Sweden's SAPO security service had detained the man on Sunday and kept him for questioning until Wednesday, when he was released, although he remained subject to investigation, the country's prosecution service has said. 'I heard the tragic news this morning and my thoughts go to his family,' his lawyer, Anton Strand, told Reuters. Strand declined to comment on the cause of the man's death. Police told daily Svenska Dagbladet they had opened an investigation into the death, but 'there is no suspicion a crime has been committed'. The man had denied any wrongdoing and had made a complaint against the police over the handling of the case, Strand said. He also sought medical help after his release from custody. Public broadcaster SVT has reported that the diplomat had served at several Swedish embassies and that SAPO was investigating a potential connection to the resignation of the government's national security adviser last week. Sweden's foreign ministry confirmed that one of its employees had died but declined to comment further. 'We can regrettably confirm that an employee of the foreign service has passed away,' the ministry said in a statement to Reuters. 'Out of concern for the relatives we will refrain from giving further detail.'

Sweden to transfer air defense systems to Ukraine estimated at $113 million in new aid package

Sweden has announced a transfer of air defense systems worth 1.2 billion Swedish krona (approximately $113 million) to Ukraine, Svenska Dagbladet reported on Feb. 23. This announcement was made by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, and Minister of Education Johan Pehrson. Under this package, Stockholm will transfer Robot 70 and Tridon Mk2 systems to Ukraine. The aid package committed to providing over $1.2 billion to Ukraine, and included 16 CB90 combat boats with weapons stations, a million rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, 146 trucks, 1,500 TOW anti-tank missiles, as well as 200 AT4 anti-tank launchers. Swedish word of the day: mammakorv

Mammakorv is a compound word which literally translates as "mummy sausage" or "mum sausage". But what is it? It appears to have been coined in an article in Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) from February 2nd, 2025, by fashion writer Alice Aveshagen, who described them as 'a formless down cylinder that seems to be suffocating women of the Western world'. They are long, knee-length puffer jackets which, according to Aveshagen, seem to be particularly popular among 'new middle class mums born in the late 80s or early 90s'. She added that they are 'a type of standing bag, often in black, grey or beige, or yellow if you're feeling daring'. Aveshagen had originally dismissed them as a Stockholm phenomenon, until she moved to London and saw them everywhere. 'They're haunting me as soon as I dare step outside,' she wrote. The word can be used to describe the jackets by themselves or the people wearing them. After Aveshagen's article was published, usage of the word has, to say the least, exploded in Sweden, with strong opinions on both sides of the mammakorv divide. Author Maria Sveland, writing in Expressen, said the debate was yet another example of 'classic mammamobbning ' (another compound word meaning 'mum-bullying' or perhaps better translated as mum-shaming). In Kristianstadsbladet, Johanna Schreiber described them as 'a sign of liberation', representing the privilege mothers have of 'being able to glide between the roles of mother and woman'. Dagens Nyheter's Lisa Magnusson wrote an article with the headline 'all I want is to be an unsexy mammakorv ', before quickly adding that comfort has its limits – she could never sink so low as to wear a pair of crocs. Public radio station P4 Kronoberg counted 95 mammakorvar and even one pappakorv in an hour in central Växjö, while P4 Stockholm found 100 of the shapeless jackets in the same amount of time in the capital. Swedish media have carried out countless interviews with mammakorv -wearers (mammakorvbärare in Swedish), with most of the women praising their jackets for being cosy, practical, or warm. 'I don't want to dress like my children,' Johanna, who described herself as 'a proud mammakorv ', told P4 Stockholm. 'I want to dress like an adult.' Marie, who was the hundredth mammakorv to walk past the radio station's reporter during her count for the jackets, also praised them for their comfort. 'I love them, mammakorvar,' she said. 'Everything has to be comfortable now, I don't want anything that's tight anywhere. It's so incredibly comfortable and I'm never cold, never have to wear an extra thick skirt or thermals – it's all in one!' Example sentences: Jag älskar min mammakorv, den är så himla praktisk. I love my mammakorv, it's so practical. Jag hatar när jag får en kall rumpa när jag sitter och leker med mitt barn i sandlådan. Skaffa en mammakorv då! I hate it when I get a cold bum when I'm sitting by the sandpit playing with my child. Buy a mammakorv then!
