Channel 10's Perth to east coast move ‘tip of the iceberg' warns expert Rob McKnight

Plans to move some off-air roles at Channel 10's Perth newsroom to the east coast are 'the tip of the iceberg' and will ultimately mean less local coverage, leading TV commentator and experienced producer Rob McKnight has warned. Mr McKnight, co-creator of industry news website TV Blackbox, said although viewers may not immediately notice the difference, it would have an effect on local stories. He also suggested further consolidation by the network's foreign owner Paramount was likely, after plans to move editors in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane to Melbourne and Sydney were revealed this week. 'An editor in Sydney or Melbourne is just not going to give a local Perth story the kind of energy they give to a story in their own market,' he said. The West Australian understands that Perth's Channel 10 newsroom was told on Monday that as many as four editor roles would be moved to Sydney and Melbourne by the end of the month. Similar roles in Adelaide and Brisbane have also been affected. It is understood about 10 staff will be offered redeployment to the Eastern States. Channel 10 declined to comment or answer questions, including whether it could commit to having a locally-presented news bulletin. In an email from Paramount's vice president of news Martin White, staff were told of a change to editing workflow to ensure 'greater efficiency' at a challenging time for the media industry. 'No local news gathering, journalism or presentation is impacted by this move in any way,' he said. 'A small number of (operations) roles will be redeployed to Sydney and Melbourne, and those impacted have already been spoken to.' Mr McKnight, a former executive producer of Channel 10's now defunct breakfast panel show, Studio 10, said he thought the changes would be the 'tip of the iceberg' at Channel 10, which recently axed news program The Project. 'I think we are going to see centralisation of Channel 10 continue,' he said. 'You start with editors, then it's graphics, then 'oh we can have our producers in Sydney or Melbourne.' 'You will end up with people in Melbourne or Sydney having a very big say on a story from Perth.' He said there was a big difference in having a local story produced and edited locally. A lack of local knowledge could lead to 'silly mistakes.' It is not the first time Channel 10 has faced questions about its commitment to news in Perth. In 2000 it moved the studio production of the local bulletin to Sydney, before ultimately returning its weekday bulletin to Perth three years later. In September 2020, the Perth bulletin production was again transferred to Sydney, leading to redundancies among local staff. Narelda Jacobs, pictured, started in Perth and moved to Sydney in 2020 to co-host Studio 10 present News from the east coast. Jacobs now presents the national lunchtime and afternoon news bulletins.

Heartbreaking new detail about TV presenter Jesse Baird after alleged murder of couple by Beau Lamarre-Condon

Heartbreaking new details have emerged about the promising life and career of TV presenter Jesse Baird, who was allegedly murdered alongside his partner Luke Davies by his ex-boyfriend, former NSW Police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon. The tragedy unfolded in February 2024, when Jesse Baird and Luke Davies were allegedly shot dead at Mr Baird's home in Paddington in Sydney's eastern suburbs. The case quickly became a media sensation, not only due to the high-profile nature of the victims but also because the accused, Beau Lamarre-Condon, was a serving NSW Police officer at the time of the alleged crimes. Police were alerted to the possibility of foul play after possessions belonging to Jesse and Luke were discovered in a skip bin in Cronulla, prompting a search that led investigators to Baird's blood-stained terrace in Paddington. The discovery sent shockwaves through Sydney's close-knit entertainment and LGBTQ+ communities, where Jesse was well known and highly regarded. Before his death, Baird, 26, had just accepted a coveted role as a producer on the reality series The Real Housewives of Sydney ahead of its third season and was due to start in March 2024, according to The Daily Mail. 'He had just signed on in January,' said Baird's close friend and former colleague, showbiz reporter Craig Bennett. 'He was ever so excited about it because he loved the show.' Baird's television career included presenting and reporting roles on Network 10's Studio 10, Totally Wild, and Gamify, as well as work as an AFL goal umpire. 'He'd been let go by Network 10 when Studio 10 was axed in November 2023, but Jesse was great on camera and an accomplished producer,' Bennett explained. 'He was immeasurably excited about this new frontier on Housewives. He never got to see that dream realised. He would have gone a long way in reality television.' Friends recalled Baird's warmth and professionalism, with Bennett joking that after working with stars like Denise Drysdale, handling the cast of The Real Housewives of Sydney would have been a breeze. Former NSW Police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon was charged with two counts of murder and one count of break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence. Lamarre-Condon was dismissed from the NSW Police Force in March 2024 and has spent more than a year in custody awaiting trial. Lamarre-Condon became a police officer in 2019 after running a celebrity blog, where he was photographed with numerous high-profile stars such as Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Harry Styles. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance via audiovisual link on June 17.

‘It's time for me to take a breath': The Project star Sarah Harris jokes about possible gig on OnlyFans after series axed

Sarah Harris has broken her silence for the first time since Channel 10 confirmed The Project has been axed. A Ten spokesperson confirmed to that The Project wound end its run after 'almost 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes'. "The Project will air for the last time on Friday, June 27, ending an incredible run of almost 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes,' the network said in a statement. "The impact that The Project has had on the media and entertainment industry, countless careers, as well as on Australian society and culture, cannot be overstated.' It is unclear whether the series' high profile hosts, including Waleed Aly and Sarah Harris, will be deployed to other projects at Ten or leave the network entirely. In a tongue-in-cheek statement, Harris teased that fans should 'keep an eye out' for when she starts a page on adult subscription content website OnlyFans. 'I've had a blast, but it's time for me to take a breath and spend some time with my boys… keep an eye out for my OnlyFans page,' she said in a statement shared via the program's official Instagram page. Harris, a Channel 10 veteran who previously co-anchored the canned daytime series Studio 10, joined The Project in 2022. 'Our supportive Queen, Sarah Harris, has spoken following the news that we are finishing up on June 27 and her boys are going to have the best time with their Mum over the next few months,' the channel said in a statement. The Melbourne-based program features a rotating line up of regular presenters including Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton, and Georgie Tunny from Sunday through Friday. The series' original panel consisted of Carrie Bickmore, Charlie Pickering and Dave Hughes, but its most well-known line up was arguably Bickmore, Peter Helliar, Waleed Aly, and Hamish McDonald. It was this era that saw The Project and its hosts pick up a trophy case of Logie wins, including Gold Logies for Bickmore in 2015 and Aly in 2016. Bickmore and Helliar left the Melbourne-based show in 2022 amid reported budget cuts and declining viewership at the free-to-air broadcaster. A new half hour news program called Behind the Lines, hosted by high-profile journalist Denholm Hitchcock, is set air in July or August. It is understood Ten will be broadcasting the new show from Sydney to save on costs and already broadcasts The Project from Sydney on Sundays.

INSIDE MEDIA: Why Channel 10's The Project is facing the axe

You can watch a video version of this column in the player above. Ouch. While the budget has been reduced over the years, it is still one of 10's most expensive shows and delivers only a fraction of the audience compared to Nine and Seven. Sarah Harris has been a welcome addition to the show – I'm a big fan (in fact I'm such a big fan I was the one who convinced her to leave Channel 9 and move across to host Studio 10). Sarah has added some much-needed balance to the show but even her charm and insights aren't enough to garner bigger audiences. When you consider how much free publicity the show gets on news websites each and every day, the fact it can only draw in a few hundred-thousand viewers every night proves the show is failing to resonate. It's left-leaning, patronising, woke agenda isn't even connecting with the younger audiences the network craves. Literally just plucking a date at random, I've gone and had a look at the ratings for the show last Tuesday (21 May 2025). In total people The Project averaged 353,000, beaten by Sunrise on 406,000. In the 25-54 demo, the show attracted 143,000, easily beaten by The Chase and Tipping Point which air earlier in the day with less available audience. Tipping Point also beat The Project in the 16-39 demo. The Project is the pet project (no pun intended) of 10's big boss Bev McGarvey. She has been a big supporter of the show since the very first pitch from Roving Enterprises around doing 'news differently'. In 2017 CBS took over ownership of 10, after it went into administration, and when top brass went through the books they were shocked at the deal with Roving Enterprises. The company couldn't believe all of the news gathered by 10NEWS was freely given over to a separate company along with resources to put the show to air. That was almost the nail in the coffin for the show, but it was saved by McGarvey. Now, 10 is facing a major cost crisis. As I exclusively reported last week, I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of here will be pre-recorded next year in order to reduce costs. Production crew will work through without days off to get the series in the can as soon as possible without lost time over weekends. There's no doubt on any other network The Project would have been axed years ago, but when you've got no other content it's much easier to stick with what you've got. IN DEFENCE OF ITA The esteemed Ita Buttrose has come under attack recently over travel-related expenses at the ABC. At issue is the $3625.79 she spent on luxury car hire in the 12 months between January 2023 and January 2024. To be honest I would have thought the Chair of the ABC would have spent a lot more than that. I actually can't work out what all the outrage is about. Now, I have become friends with Ita since I was her boss at Studio 10, but I would make this exact same commentary about new Chair Kim Williams. I can't understand why staff and media don't think it's appropriate for the Chair to be taken to events in a car. No, she shouldn't be taking a taxi or an Uber – she is the chair of the ABC and that position comes with certain privileges. I would bet stars at the ABC (and even some producers) would have spent more on taxis in the same 12 months. Having a reliable vehicle to take you to events is a must for someone in Ita's position. Not to mention the fact she has serious back issues that require her to use a walking stick and wheelchair. While the ABC has to endure transparency commercial broadcasters don't, this just seems to be low hanging fruit on the part of media trying to bash the ABC. As someone who often holds the organisation to account, I recommend we hold the outrage for a real story – not 3 grand's worth of travel. KILLER TV How does a TV show make me want to see a serial killer succeed? I've been watching Dexter New Blood on Paramount+ this past week and it always amazes me when I sit there on the edge of my seat hoping he doesn't get caught being a serial killer. That's some good writing when you consider it goes against everything we believe in as a society. And that's the power of good writing, acting and producing. Creators can take a concept like a serial killer and make him the hero of the piece – someone we want to see succeed. Amazing stuff. And I'm going to throw this one in while I'm at it. I've only just discovered Welcome to Wrexham on Disney+ recently. It's been a long time since I've watched a show with a smile on my face the whole way through. There have also been moments where I've been in tears. The story of Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds buying a Welsh football team. I'm not that into sports but this is way more than a sporting documentary – it's emotionally compelling. While Rob comes across as the more genuine of the two, there's no doubt they have made a huge difference to the local community and helped Wrexham climb up the league table. It's an amazing story and one that will hook you.
