Student organisations accuse corporate colleges of ‘rank scam,' demand action

Leaders of student organisations have accused certain corporate college managements of resorting to what they call the 'Ranks' scam.' At a press conference in Vijayawada on Thursday, Student Federation of India (SFI) state secretary Prasanna Kumar alleged that after the JEE (Advanced)-2025 results were announced on June 2, many corporate colleges began making false claims that the top rankers belonged to their respective coaching centre or institution. Citing examples, he said: 'Majid Hussain, who secured an all-India 3rd rank, was falsely claimed as a student of a private college, while in reality he attended coaching classes at a private academy in Madhya Pradesh. Similarly, Akshat Kumar, who secured an all-India 6th rank, did not study in a private college as claimed by them but was a student of another private academy.' He added that in the race to garner a bigger pie of the student talent for the next academic batches, these corporate colleges made false claims over successful students' ranks to deceive students and parents. He said: 'There was a sharp decline in enrolments in these colleges as a large number of students were resorting to taking the extreme step of suicide. The government must take measures to check these fraudulent practices.' The leaders of the All-India Students Federation (AISF) also made similar charges against educational institutions and have said that the practice of multiple institutions claiming credit for the success of a single candidate in entrance exams can be misleading for parents. They demanded action against Telugu film actors, who serve as brand ambassadors for these institutions.

SFI urges govt. to drop plans to privatise medical colleges

Student Federation of India's (SFI) State committee leaders have slammed the State government for its reported plans to privatise 17 newly-established government medical colleges. In a statement on Friday (May 30), the federation's State president P. Rammohan and secretary K. Prasanna Kumar said reports appearing in a section of media suggested that these medical institutions were being leased out to private entities for up to 66 years at throwaway prices. They said the government decision would deprive students from marginalised communities of medical education and affordable healthcare services to the public would become a thing of the past. They pointed out that the Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) and IT Nara Lokesh, during his 'Yuvagalam' padayatra, had promised to repeal G.O.s 107 and 108 introduced by the previous government to sell medical seats, and had assured that all seats would be filled under government quota. They demanded that the Minister keep his promise and persuade the government to drop its privatisation proposal. They warned of State-wide protests should the government overlook their demand. They also found fault with the practice of engaging private individuals and agencies to conduct exams in the SC, ST and BC residential schools across the State. They said the residential set-ups lacked basic amenities subjecting the inmates to serious hardship. Many of these residential hostels did not have wardens, cooks, helpers, watchmen and even basic health care support. Calling for immediate reforms, they said it was important to focus on revamping the teaching practices in residential schools, recruitment of adequate non-teaching staff, construction of permanent buildings for all residential schools and a ban on the practice of outsourcing the process of conducting exams to private agencies.

Kolkata: An AI-generated manipulated photograph linking a Left leader to an alleged Pakistani spy sparked controversy, leading to police complaints. CPM youth leader Srijan Bhattacharya filed a cybercrime complaint on Tuesday after an AI-altered image circulated on social media, falsely showing him with recently arrested YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who faces espionage charges. The original photograph featured Bhattacharya with a Student Federation of India member, taken at a Left Brigade rally on April 20. "This is a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation," Bhattacharya told reporters. "Our opponents are resorting to fake content when they can't challenge us with logic." The woman, whose photo was superimposed, accompanied by her mother Seema Das, attempted to file a separate police complaint at Baranagar PS. "The viral image has deeply affected my daughter," said her mother, a former CPM councillor. The manipulated image maintained identical background, clothing and shades in the original photo. - Dwaipayan Ghosh
