Head coach Steve Kerr's son, Nicholas Kerr, is officially joining the Warriors' NBA coaching staff as an assistant. After building his resume over several years in the G League and beyond, the 32-year-old Kerr is now stepping into the spotlight beside his father, a move that's generating plenty of discussion among fans and analysts alike. Some fans even pointed out that it was a clear-cut case of nepotism. Steve Kerr's son Nicholas Kerr earns NBA promotion after years of coaching grind Nicholas Kerr has steadily climbed the coaching ladder. After beginning his career as a video coordinator and player development coach with the Warriors, he spent time learning the ropes with other programs, including a stint as a graduate assistant at Cal and an internship with the San Antonio Spurs. In 2021, the Warriors brought him on as an assistant with their G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. Over the past two seasons, Nicholas led the Santa Cruz Warriors as head coach, guiding them to back-to-back 20-14 records and fourth-place finishes in the Western Conference. Now, he returns to the NBA bench in a bigger role, ready to contribute at the highest level of the game. The elder Kerr, now entering his 11th season as Golden State's head coach, remains one of the NBA's most accomplished leaders. Under his guidance, the Warriors have captured four championships and made six Finals appearances, compiling a stellar 567-308 regular-season record and 104 playoff wins. Fans react to Steve Kerr's son Nicholas Kerr joining the Golden State Warriors coaching staff NBA fans quickly moved into the nepotism discussion after the news broke on the internet. 'The clearest nepotism in the history of sports,' one fan wrote. Another fan slammed the decision of giving Nicholas the position, 'Isn't there an established black assistant coach that Steve Kerr should have given this opportunity instead of his son? What gives?' 'Shouldn't this be a black coaching position? Doing this on Juneteenth too. So disrespectful,' another fan echoed the same sentiment. One fan brought out the LeBron James and his son Bronny reference, 'We still care about nepotism now, or was this just a LeBron thing?' Another wrote, 'Nick Kerr nepotism hire, but they only mad when it's Bron. Make it make sense.' There has already been a mild outrage among fans slamming the decision to appoint the Kerr son in the team. Regardless, it remains to be seen how the father-son dynamic would go alongside the team. Steve Kerr adds son Nicholas to Warriors' coaching staff
June 19 - Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr promoted his son Nicholas to the coaching staff Thursday. Nicholas Kerr, 32, served as the Warriors G League head coach in Santa Cruz (Calif.) the past two seasons. Santa Cruz went 20-14 and finished in fourth place in the G League's Western Conference each of the past two seasons. Born in Cleveland and raised in San Diego, Nicholas Kerr played college basketball at San Diego and Cal. He served as a graduate assistant at Cal in the 2016-17 season before moving on to the San Antonio Spurs as an intern. The younger Kerr worked in the player development department for the Warriors and was a video coordinator for three seasons. In 2021 the Warriors hired him as a G League assistant coach at Santa Cruz before becoming head coach in 2023. Steve Kerr, 59, has been Golden State's head coach for 11 seasons starting in 2014-15. Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Named 'Fallback Option' For Kevin Durant Suitor
Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Named 'Fallback Option' For Kevin Durant Suitor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors have been anticipated to be going in different directions this offseason for some time now. The two sides have not enjoyed a mutually-beneficial relationship in recent memory. Advertisement Kuminga failed to take a major leap in the 2024-25 NBA season, putting a lot of doubt out there as to his overall ceiling in the NBA. The Warriors, likewise, have been questioned with regard to how healthy of an environment they have provided for his growth. With Kuminga heading for restricted free agency in the summer of 2025, many have been quick to speculate about where the new home for the athletic forward will be. Michael Scotto provided an update on which team could emerge to provide that. Mandatory Credit: David Gonzales-Imagn Images Mandatory Credit: David Gonzales-Imagn Images Scotto wrote, "Given Kuminga's fluctuating role with the Warriors following the acquisition of Jimmy Butler, his lukewarm relationship with coach Steve Kerr, and being discussed in trade talks before the deadline to land Kevin Durant that ultimately fell through, there's a belief a change of scenery could be in the cards this summer." Advertisement The NBA insider would go on to reveal the Miami Heat as one of the two major teams to watch in the Kuminga sweepstakes. The Heat are projected to go big-game hunting, but if that fails, their attention will shift to the Warriors forward. "Kuminga is looking for an expanded and consistent role moving forward, league sources told HoopsHype," Scotto said. "The Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are two teams to monitor as potential sign-and-trade candidates for Kuminga, league sources told HoopsHype." The HoopsHype insider wrote: "Miami has prioritized pursuits of Giannis Antetokounmpo (if he became available this summer) and Durant (whom they're actively trying to acquire) on their wish list ahead of Kuminga, who's viewed as a fallback option to the two superstars." If South Beach is to be the next destination for the former lottery pick, the Warriors can rest assured knowing they will receive assets in return for Kuminga's departure. After the Butler trade, these two sides have a clear history of effectively working together. Bulls Star Linked to Warriors as Jonathan Kuminga Sign-and-Trade Target
Bulls Star Linked to Warriors as Jonathan Kuminga Sign-and-Trade Target originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga could very well be on the move this offseason. Advertisement After being highly touted as one of the young centerpieces of Warriors owner Joe Lacob's supposed "two timelines" approach (along with swingman Moses Moody and now-departed center James Wiseman and now-departed shooting guard Jordan Poole), Kuminga appears to have grown frustrated with his inconsistent role on Steve Kerr's club. An injury and the Warriors' blockbuster midseason trade to acquire Jimmy Butler from the Miami Heat reduced Kuminga's minutes. By the end of the season, he was a healthy scratch for Kerr. Injuries elsewhere on the roster necessitated a return to the rotation for Kuminga, and he occasionally rewarded that decision with some big scoring nights in the playoffs. Advertisement With the Chicago Bulls rumored to be in pursuit of Kuminga in a possible sign-and-trade deal, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reports that the 6-foot-8 forward is looking for a more consistent role in the future than he's had with the veteran-laden Warriors. Chicago could provide that. So who would the Bulls surrender in such an exchange? Per Scotto, the Warriors could re-engage Chicago on talks to trade for two-time All-Star center Nikola Vucevic, for whom both sides discussed a potential deal leading up to this past season's February 8 trade deadline. Vucevic, who turns 35 in October, is about to be on an expiring $21.5 million contract next season. Advertisement Sources inform Scotto that Golden State may still opt to re-sign Kuminga and hold onto him. The 22-year-old is heading for restricted free agency when the 2025-26 season officially tips off on June 30. The size-challenged Warriors would appreciate Vucevic's long-range sniping, rebounding, and passing, although he's plodding (i.e. a nightmare on switches) and a limited rim protector. In 2024-25, the 6-foot-10 USC product averaged 18.5 points on .530/.402/.805 shooting splits, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while suiting up for 73 contests. Vucevic would join an incredibly old, incredibly talented Hall of Fame Golden State core, alongside 11-time All-Star point guard Stephen Curry (37), six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler (35), and four-time All-Star forward Draymond Green (34). While struggling with injuries to Curry and Butler, the Warriors were felled by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of this spring's playoffs. Advertisement Golden State is no doubting hoping to add more championship hardware while Curry and Butler are still All-Star-level talents. And the team's height problems can no longer be ignored. Vucevic could help there, but it would behoove the Warriors to add an athletic, rim-rolling big man as his backup. Warriors Announce Coaching Staff Move Involving Steve Kerr's Son
Warriors Announce Coaching Staff Move Involving Steve Kerr's Son originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It was a solid season for the Golden State Warriors as they were able to turn things around at the trade deadline after adding Jimmy Butler to their roster. Advertisement With their new star trio of Stephen Curry, Butler and Draymond Green, Golden State was able to make a run to the second round of the playoffs before they were eliminated in five games by the Minnesota Timberwolves. While it was not the ending that the Warriors wanted, especially with their roster not being healthy due to Curry's injury in Game 1 of the second round, it was still a successful season after it looked as though they were going to be a bottom feeder early on. While the Warriors will be looking to upgrade their roster this summer, they made a key move on their coaching staff on Wednesday. Advertisement The Warriors announced that Nicholas Kerr, son of head coach Steve Kerr, will be called up from the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State's G League affiliate, and rejoin his father's coaching staff. This is an incredible honor for Kerr as he will now rejoin his father in the NBA after being in the G League over the last few seasons.
