Pusha T Calls Travis Scott 'A Whore' Over His Lack of Loyalty, Social Media Piles On
Brothers Terrence and Gene Thornton — better known as Pusha T and No Malice— are reuniting for a full-length Clipse album for the first time in 15 years, and the hype around it continues to rise. Fans are excited to hear the duo trade bars on the forthcoming album Let God Sort Em Out , but have recently been on the edge of their seats after Push broke down his involvement in the Drake/Kendrick Lamar beef and his strained relationship with Kanye West. He spoke at length about it in a recent GQ interview, so fans immediately attributed lyrics from newly released single 'So Be It' to be squarely aimed at West, when he rapped ' You cried in front of me/ You died in front of me/ Calabasas took your b-tch and your pride in front of me.' But further lyrics like ' Heard Utopia had moved right up the street, And her lip gloss was poppin', she ain't need you to eat, ' proved it was another rapper in the beef's orbit: Travis Scott. In a previously removed part of his interview with GQ, Push says his issue with Scott began when he was in the middle of recording his album in Paris, and the Houston rapper interrupted the session to play Pharrell tracks from what would later become Utopia . The Virginia natives weren't feeling as Pusha remembers Scott was 'smiling, laughing, jumping around, doing his f-cking monkey dance.' Then, when he released the album days later, there was a Drake verse on 'Meltdown' dissing Pharrell where he vowed to 'melt down the chains that I bought from your boss, give a f-ck about all of that heritage sh-t.' Push feels like Scott's move was two-faced for not being transparent, also mentioning the time he hyped up Metro Boomin at Rolling Loud to play 'Like That' and fanned the flames of the beef. 'So, that's where my issue comes in—like, dawg, don't even come over here with that, because at the end of the day, I don't play how y'all play. To me, that really was just like…he's a whore. He's a whore,' he told GQ . Push adds that he doesn't hold Scott to any standard, but 'it's the principle of what I'm saying. That filthy quality that they have about themselves, that lack of loyalty. Travis really has that. He's proven.' LGSOE drops July 11, and it is said to also have a bulletproof verse from Kendrick Lamar. However, as we await the project, take a look at how social media is reacting to Pusha throwing shots at Scott below. Pusha T Fires Shots at Travis Scott in New Clipse Single "So Be It"
Summary Pusha Ttakes aim atTravis Scottin the latestClipsesingle, 'So Be It.' The track hears Push andMaliceglide over production work fromPharrell, with the former directly calling out La Flame in a fiery verse. 'You cried in front of me, you died in front of me/Calabasas took your b*tch and your pride in front of me/HeardUTOPIAhad moved right up the street/And her lip gloss was poppin', she ain't need you to eat,' he raps, namedropping theCactus Jackartist's latest album and even alluding to Scott's breakup withKylie Jenner, with whom he shares two kids with. The Clipse member confirmed that he has a bone to pick with Scott. He toldGQthat it began when the latter playedUTOPIAfor Pharrell atLouis VuittonHQ, when Clipse was also present and working. Push explained that the version of 'Meltdown' — a track that featured a verse fromDrakedissing P — that was played that day didn't include Drizzy. Pusha T wasn't a fan of the fact that Drake's verse was included after Scott played the track for Pharrell. He alleged that Scott lacks loyalty, and takes sides when it's convenient for him. 'He's done this a lot. He has no picks. He'll do this with anybody. He did it with 'Sicko Mode'… He was on the [Rolling Loud] stage like, 'Play that, play that,'' he continued, referring to the Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar's 'Like That' — the diss track that elevated Drake and Dot's feud. 'He don't have no picks, no loyalty to nobody. He'll jump around whatever he feels is hot or cling onto whatever he feels is hot.' He added, 'So, that's where my issue comes in — like, dawg, don't even come over here with that, because at the end of the day, I don't play how y'all play. To me, that really was just like … He's a wh*re. He's a wh*re.' In addition to the release of 'So Be It,' Clipse also unveiled an alternateVerdycover for their upcoming albumLet God Sort Em Out. The reveal includes a merch lineup featuring branded T-shirts in the style of Verdy, graphics with Vick, a vinyl LP, CD and cassette. Clipse Release Sleek, Cinematic Video for ‘So Be It'
The Clipse are taking us back to the blog era of the aughts during the rollout for their Let God Sort Em Out project. Today, the Virginia duo dropped the video for 'So Be It,' the second single from their upcoming album, dropping July 11. The black-and-white, Hannan Hussain-directed video showcases the brothers rapping on the site of a mansion, with classic luxury cars strewn about in lieu of the modern vehicles that artists typically boast alongside. The sleek visual aesthetic fits their slick bars and the beguiling violin sample Pharrell employs alongside sparse, thumping drums. Yes, he threw shots at Travis Scott on the record (because of Drake's Pharrell diss on Scott's 'Meltdown'), but that's not what makes 'So Be It' special. From the music video's cinematic visuals to the sound design, the moment exemplifies the intentionality that makes the Clipse so respected and beloved. Clipse debuted the song last night with DJs Funkmaster Flex and DJ Hed, who played it on Hot 97 and Instagram Live, respectively. As of press time, it's still not available via digital service providers (DSP). Last night, fans clamored to hear a clear, studio-quality version of the track. Some older fans even referenced wanting a 'CDQ,' a.k.a. CD quality, version of the song last night. That phrase is a holdover from the blog era, when an artist would send a song to a radio DJ, and fans would listen to a low-quality rip on the radio airing while indefinitely waiting for the pristine version to drop on a blog. X user @Raw_SPK spoke for a generation of fans when he posted, 'If this was back in the day, that new Clipse CDQ would be on InFlexWeTrust and 2DopeBoyz within the hour,' referring to two blog era mainstays that posted new music on the daily. The Clipse, more than many acts, are intent on creative choices that appeal specifically to their fans, even if it alienates others. Layered drug references are a key part of their artistry, often translated from those who get their insular references to the rest of the masses. Pusha T made 'IYKYK' a go-to slogan for people only talking to others of a certain cloth. 'Ace Trumpets,' the title of the first Let God Sort Em Out single, is a term you'd probably only know if you identified with the flashy lifestyle the song depicts. And it feels like the rollout for 'So Be It,' with a radio premiere and no immediate DSP release, was a gift for the blog-era fans who grew up with them and weathered MP3s that were staticky and DJ-tagged to death just to listen to their favorites. Their decision to delay a DSP release and house 'So Be It' on Instagram stirs that much more anticipation among new-age rap fans accustomed to being spoon-fed everything immediately. In tandem with their recent editorial profiles, Clipse are giving us an intentional, music-focused album rollout that feels like yesteryear, before Instagram Live sessions, tweetstorms, and interviews with streamers became the promotional norm.
