Sandwich residents blame drains for Kent flooding

Residents in a flood-hit Kent town fear they may have to install defences if drains are not cleared after water flowed into homes and businesses this in Sandwich and across the east of Kent saw rivers of water flowing along streets, with some likening the deluge to a "monsoon".Flood-hit homeowners now claim that issues would not have been as bad if roadside drains had been properly Collings, who woke to find his house in Breezy Corner had been hit by the flooding, said: "There were pools and filth everywhere." He added: "It very quickly turned into a complete deluge. The drains just couldn't cope with it."Unless they fix the drains, which aren't adequate at the moment, then I need to put flood defences in."Mr Collings, who has lived in Sandwich for five years, said he believed that if drains had been cleared then the flooding "would not have been quite so bad". 'Bubbling from drains' Dozens of people, including school students due to sit exams this week, were evacuated after an amber thunderstorm warning from the Met Office came with severe than 30,000 lightning strikes were recorded on Friday night, the Met Office McClory, who runs the Waiting Room Cafe and Bar in Delf Street, said she was woken by the lightning before water started "bubbling up from the drains and the road". She added: "It reminded me of the thunderstorms we would get in Australia where I'm from."The team hadn't finished closing up and were trying to push the water out with brooms and mops."Kent County Council says drains on minor roads are cleaned once every one to three years depending on risk factors including whether the areas are a known flooding on high speed roads are then checked once annually between April and Csuka, Sandwich Town Councillor for North Ward, said: "I have experienced monsoons in Asia before and Friday night was on a par with that."There are underlying issues here that need addressing by Kent County Council. Blocked drains is probably the top issue that comes to me as a councillor."Kent County Council has been approached for comment.

Southampton vs Arsenal: Prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

Arsenal wrap up their 2024/25 Premier League campaign with a game away at already-relegated Southampton this weekend. After beating Newcastle last time out, the pressure has been lifted on the Gunners ahead of their trip to the south coast as Champions League football for next season has been secured. Now, there is a scenario where Arsenal do not finish as runners-up to Liverpool. It is highly unlikely but a defeat to the Saints and Manchester City beating Fulham coupled with a nine-goal swing would result in a remarkable final day twist. Southampton did hold Man City to a goalless draw in their last home game, gaining a crucial point that prevented them from becoming the joint-worst team in Premier League history. That said, they will finish the campaign rock-bottom and have very little to play for except professional pride and a chance to claim a big scalp before exiting the top-flight. Southampton vs Arsenal is scheduled for a 4pm BST kick-off on Sunday, May 25, 2025. The match will take place at St Mary's Stadium. TV channel: In the UK, the game will not be televised live. Free highlights: The Sky Sports app and YouTube channel will show highlights shortly after the final whistle with Match of the Day broadcasting on BBC One at 10.30pm BST. Live blog: You can follow all the action on matchday via Standard Sport's live blog, with expert analysis from Simon Collings at the ground. Aaron Ramsdale is in line to face his former club for a second time this season. However, Saints trio Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are all doubtful. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber have been added to a lengthy Arsenal injury list as their absence vs Southampton was confirmed by Mikel Arteta. Gabriel Magalhaes, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Jesus are sidelined too. Riccardo Calafiori is in line to partner Jakub Kiwior in central defence, whilst Mikel Merino is available again after serving a one-match suspension last weekend. Pressure is off Arsenal for a change so that could lead to a more relaxed performance. There is a reason Southampton are going down with one of the lowest points totals in Premier League history and this is a chance to grab some goals. With David Raya in with a shout of sharing the Golden Glove award, he will be desperate to keep a clean sheet against a Saints side that hasn't scored in their last three outings. Arsenal to win, 3-0 Southampton are somewhat of Arsenal's bogey team, especially at St Mary's as they are unbeaten in three of the last four meetings on home soil. In fact, the Gunners' win in the reverse fixture earlier in the season was their first in three attempts. Southampton wins: 23 Arsenal wins: 47 Draws: 27 Southampton to win: 8/1 Arsenal to win: 1/4 Draw: 7/2 Odds via Betfair (subject to change).

Ipswich vs Arsenal: Prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

Arsenal must climb down from cloud nine to face Ipswich as they return to Premier League duties. A stunning 5-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid has booked their first Champions League semi-finals in 16 years, but the Gunners have seen their form slip domestically. Dropped points to both Everton and Brentford has effectively handed the title to Liverpool, who will clinch the league crown if the Gunners lose before they beat Leicester laster in the day. Ipswich, meanwhile, are still fighting to keep their Premier League status, being facing a losing battle. Ipswich vs Arsenal is scheduled for a 2pm BST kick-off on Sunday, April 20, 2025. The match will take place at Portman Road. TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports/TNT Sports. Live stream: Sky Sports subscribers can also catch the contest live online via the Sky Go app and website. Live blog: You can follow all the action on matchday via Standard Sport's live blog, with expert analysis from Simon Collings at the ground. Liam Delap has been struggling with a rib injury of late but expect him to start, even if he may not last the full 90 minutes, and Kalvin Phillips is in a race to be fit to face the Gunners. In less positive news, Jaden Philogene could face some weeks on the sidelines with a knee picked up against Chelsea and Omari Hutchinson has not shaken off his fitness issues in time to face his former club. Mikel Arteta will be tempted to make more changes after another full-energy display against Real Madrid. It means the likes of Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko could come in, while Leandro Trossard is pushing to start. Bukayo Saka is set to start a Premier League game since returning from injury, but should keep his place. Riccardo Calafiori is getting closer to a return, but this weekend will come too soon. Ipswich need to take points off Arsenal to keep their ever-fading survival hopes alive, so need to come out the traps and test Arsenal, and Liam Delay is more than capable of doing that. However, that will play right into Arsenal's hands and they should have little trouble breaking through a leaky defence. This could be an entertaining clash to kick off the day. Arsenal to win, 3-1. Ipswich wins: 18 Draws: 11 Arsenal wins: 31 Ipswich: 6/1 Draw: 3/1 Arsenal: 4/11 Odds via Betfair (subject to change).
