CM Naidu for incentives to AP families with more kids
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh, which once amended its laws to bar people with more than two kids from contesting panchayat and municipal elections, now plans to incentivise having larger families as part of a strategy to combat dropping fertility rates and shift focus to what CM N Chandrababu Naidu terms "investment in human capital". The bigger families may get higher incentives," Naidu told TOI ahead of completing a year in office on June 12. "As part of the 'Zero Poverty P4' initiative, I have already rolled out an interesting model in which wealthier people will adopt poor families. This will not only bridge income disparities, but also ensure welfare of the entire family," he said. The four-time CM, who has been an advocate of population management, said the current demographics in the southern states require govts to revisit their strategies. "Fertility rates in AP need to increase. At the present rate, AP will face serious problems… That is why I am thinking of bigger families," he said. Naidu announced recently that female employees could avail of maternity leave any number of times. "It was limited to two times only. We have removed the restrictions," he said. The state govt also made it mandatory for every organisation to provide childcare centres at workplaces. Naidu announced financial aid of Rs 15,000 for every schoolchild. "We give this money directly to the mothers of students. Apart from this, the NDA govt in AP is planning to announce financial assistance to couples for having more kids." The two-child policy previously applicable to prospective candidates for panchayat and municipal polls has been reversed. Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin said recently that with the Centre pushing for population-based delimitation of constituencies, there was a need for people in the state to have more children.

Sikkim govt rescues stranded tourists, locals, and taxi drivers in Chaten
The helicopter sortie began this morning from the Pakyong Greenfield Airport, with the first sortie taking off towards Chaten to initiate the evacuation process ANI The Sikkim government has arranged a special helicopter sortie for their immediate air evacuation in response to requests made by stranded locals, tourist taxi drivers, and certain government officials stationed at the Chaten area. The operation comes as part of the ongoing coordinated relief and evacuation efforts being undertaken in view of recent adverse conditions that have disrupted normal road connectivity and access to the region. The helicopter sortie began this morning from the Pakyong Greenfield Airport, with the first sortie taking off towards Chaten to initiate the evacuation process. The State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens in affected regions. Rescue and relief operations were being conducted in North Sikkim, following recent floods in the region. Meanwhile, the Sikkim government is still closely monitoring the overall situation in the region and is providing all necessary support and assistance to those affected. Earlier on Friday, in a major relief operation, all stranded tourists were successfully evacuated from Chaten, one of the worst-hit areas in North Sikkim, following recent landslides and flash floods. Mangan District Collector Anant Jain confirmed the evacuation. DC Anant Jain praised the joint efforts of the district administration, military, paramilitary forces, and local communities for their swift and coordinated response. "Our priority was to ensure the safety of every stranded individual. We thank the Indian Air Force and all ground teams for their relentless service," Jain said. The final phase of the operation involved Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters airlifting the remaining 63 tourists from Chaten on Thursday, with follow-up sorties resuming on Friday morning as weather conditions improved. The operation was carried out in coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and local administration. Earlier in the week, more than 1,600 tourists were rescued by road from Lachung and Lachen valleys in a massive ground operation led by DC Jain. The tourists, including several elderly individuals and children, were safely escorted through challenging terrain and intermittent weather disturbances. Several days of heavy rainfall have triggered landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and rockfalls in many parts of the state.

North Sikkim landslide: Air Force rescues 33 people, including 2 US nationals from landslide-hit Chaten
Chaten (Sikkim): In the wake of heavy rains and devastating landslides in North Sikkim, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Wednesday carried out urgent rescue and relief operations in the remote region of Chaten and evacuated 33 stranded people, including two US nationals, from the remote and rain-battered Chaten region of North Sikkim. In a statement, the Indian Air Force said, "In response to the devastating landslides in Sikkim, Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters rapidly launched Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Ops -- dropping relief supplies, inserting NDRF teams, and evacuating 33 stranded individuals, including two US nationals, from the remote Chaten region." However, a prior operation to evacuate 113 stranded tourists from Lachen during the early hours had to be called off due to bad weather. An Mi-17 helicopter carrying nine National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel took off from Pakyong Airport around 6 am, but was forced to return mid-air because of poor visibility near Mangan and Chaten. The tourists have been stranded in Lachen for over a day after multiple landslides blocked key roads, cutting off access to the area. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for North Sikkim, warning of continued heavy rainfall over the next three days. Meanwhile, the Indian Army has reached Lachen village on foot, navigating through dangerous terrain and extreme weather. The troops were able to locate all 113 stranded tourists. "In the wake of a devastating landslide in North Sikkim, the #IndianArmy is leading relentless search and rescue operations under extreme weather and hazardous terrain. Lachen village, completely cut off, has been reached on foot, with 113 stranded tourists located -- 30 of them, including foreign nationals, airlifted on 3 June," the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a post on X. The Army is also searching for six missing persons in the region. Specialised teams equipped with advanced tools are working in unstable and high-altitude conditions to find them. "Search efforts continue for six missing individuals. Despite unstable ground and high-altitude challenges, specialised teams and equipment are on the ground. The Army stands resolute: every life matters, and every effort continues. #IndianArmy #SikkimLandslide," the MoD added. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has also been responding swiftly to landslides, road blockages, and communication blackouts across Sikkim, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of Bhutan. The MoD stated, "Incessant rains across Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Eastern Bhutan have triggered landslides, road blockages, and communication blackouts. BRO India has responded with unmatched urgency -- clearing debris in Mizoram, restoring access in Sikkim, keeping the Koloriang-Lee-Sarli-Huri lifeline operational in Arunachal's Kurung Kumey, and swiftly reopening the Darranga-Trashigang Highway in Bhutan after a massive landslide on 30 May." "Working around the clock in hostile terrain, BRO ensures connectivity, relief, and critical support. A testament to resilience and India's enduring regional partnership," it added. The Government of Mizoram had earlier issued an advisory asking dignitaries and officials to postpone their visits to the state due to severe weather conditions. The advisory comes after several days of intense rainfall that have triggered landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and rockfalls in various districts.
