Flames tear through Edinburgh flat as dozens of firefighters battle blaze

Terrifying footage shows a firefighter being elevated up to the third floor while battling the ferocious blaze which had engulfed a flat. Over 25 firefighters have battled a blaze which tore through a flat in Edinburgh late last night. Emergency crews, including police, the ambulance service and at least 25 firefighters, raced to the incident at a block of flats on Gunnet Court, Muirhouse. ‌ The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service noted that they received the call shortly before 11pm last night (Thursday June 19) and mobilised five pump appliances and a height vehicle, reports Edinburgh Live. ‌ Horror images from the scene show a firefighter battling orange flames coming from a 3rd floor flat as black smoke can be seen billowing from the building. The height vehicle was used to extinguish the blaze as the firefighter could be seen spraying water into the flat while being elevated by the appliance while the whole apartment was engulfed in flames. The area, including Muirhouse View, was taped off by emergency services as several police cars could also be seen. It is understood residents were evacuated as a group of people could be seen standing behind a cordon watching on. Hero firefighters fought the fire for three hours before leaving the area at around 2am on Friday June 20. ‌ A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received reports of a fire at a flat on Gunnet Court, at Muirhouse View, at 22.50 hours on Thursday, June 20. We mobilised five appliances and a height vehicle. "The fire on a third floor flat was extinguished and the last appliances left the scene at 2am. Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service were also in attendance." It is currently not known if there were any casualties. The Scottish Ambulance Service was approached for comment. ‌ Yesterday, in a separate incident, we reported that a major Scots motorway was closed in both directions after a pickup truck went up in flames. Traffic was drawn to a halt on Thursday afternoon after the white vehicle combusted into a blaze on M90 near Kinross. ‌ Hero firefighters raced to the scene and both lanes of the busy road were closed while the inferno was extinguished. Shocking images from the scene show giant orange flames towering from the shell of the white vehicle as thick grey smoke billows into the air. ‌ It is unknown if there were any casualties but by around 1.45pm on June 19 the fire was put out and all lanes were reopened to traffic. A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they received a number of calls at around 12.45pm regarding a pick up truck on fire, on the M90 near Kinross. Two appliances attended the fire and all lanes were closed. They have now left the scene and carriageway is fully open. Police Scotland has also been approached for comment. 'Scotland's dumbest criminal' set fire to himself while torching cars for gang

Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith also imposed an eight-month supervised release period to protect the public from serious harm once Gibb is freed from jail. A bungling gangland enforcer has been called "Scotland's dumbest criminal" by a sheriff after he set fire to himself while torching cars. Hapless hood Darren Gibb, 33 was jailed for two years after a court was shown footage of him fleeing from the scene with his hand on fire. ‌ Dundee Sheriff Court heard Gibb was acting on the orders of gangland figures to set fire to three vehicles across the city in targeted attacks. Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith also imposed an eight-month supervised release period to protect the public from serious harm once Gibb is freed from jail. ‌ The sheriff said: "He set fire to himself clearly in one of the videos. He's running with one of his hands on fire because the accelerant has gone on himself - Scotland's dumbest criminal. "You pled guilty to three charges of wilful fireraising on three dates. You intended to cause financial harm and inconvenience to the owners of the vehicles. "These acts were pre-meditated. You said you had been asked to set fire to the cars on behalf of another criminal or criminals. You attended in dark clothing and used accelerant and the crimes were pre-planned. Your blameworthiness is high and your case involves multiple victims. "There was the potentiality of serious harm or even death by your actions. Your crimes were committed solely for your financial gain. You were acting as enforcer for a drug dealer. "You were indebted to those who asked you to commit these crimes and you gained financially by having debts written off. You are not of good character generally. "In committing one of the offences you managed to set fire to yourself and were lucky not to sustain a more substantial burn injury." ‌ The court heard Gibb caused £44,300 worth of damage to a Volkswagen Golf, a Toyota Aygo, an Audi A6 and a Mercedes-Benz. Dramatic video footage played to the court showed the ferocious flames that engulfed the cars, which were started with accelerant. ‌ Residents in the Charleston Drive area overheard a loud bang in the early hours of September 19 last year. Prosecutor Stephanie Paterson said: "One of the witnesses looked out the living room window and could see the silver Volkswagen Golf to be on fire. "Two to three males in black were seen to run away. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended to extinguished the blaze and deemed it to be wilful." Plastic on the back of the nearby Toyota Aygo was damaged as a result of the fire with scene examiners later discovering the melted remains of a jerry can within a black rucksack. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Gormless Gibb also left the key fob to his partner's home at the scene of the crime. On October 24, he struck again after hiring a taxi to an address in Kirkton shortly after 4am. Ms Paterson said: "At around 5.15am, the witness was woken by a loud bang at the front door and observed the silver Audi in the driveway on fire with flames emanating from the wheel arches. ‌ "The words 'let's go Megan' were spray painted on the ground. The court was told that this was a message relating to the daughter of a neighbour. The court heard how Gibb was caught on Ring doorbell footage two days later setting fire to an Audi on the same street. He again used accelerant on the bonnet of the car, before running away in the direction of Old Glamis Road. The desperate owner used a hose to try to put out the flames before fire crews and police descended on the scene. Police arrested Gibb a short distance away and the firebug, who had burn marks on his hand, replied: "I've not done nothing at all." Gibb's clothing smelled of petrol with the court hearing how part of his jacket had been melted. Officers later searched his partner's flat, where nozzles for jerry cans were discovered in a vacuum pack. Gibb, from Dundee, pled guilty to three charges of wilful fireraising on two separate streets in Dundee. Solicitor Mike Short said Gibb "chose to follow instructions" from more serious and organised criminals after mounting up drug debts.

It comes as another car caught fire on a major Scots motorway, leaving part of it closed off. The incident happened just before 12.30pm on Sunday, June 15, on the M8 in Lanarkshire. The westbound off-slip for junction six at Newhouse has been shut to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze. One lane of the motorway has also been "restricted" on approach. ‌ Police and paramedics were also dispatched to the scene, but it is not known whether anybody was injured. Kimberley Collins, who witnessed the fire, said: "When we were travelling, from Glasgow to Edinburgh, we could see smoke and we weren't sure what side of the motorway it was coming from. "As we got closer the smoke was getting thicker and the cars were starting to slow down, traffic began to build up. "Shortly after, two police cars formed a rolling road block on the westbound carriageway where the burning car was. As we continued driving another fire engine and road recovery truck passed us on the westbound carriageway. "Not every day you see something like that! Hope everyone involved is safe and well done to the emergency services for all their hard work."

Yacht's lower deck catches fire off Shetland as lifeboat launches

The Paula Rosa had set off from Lerwick with four adult crew members on board on Tuesday at around 2pm and was bound for Norway. However, around 30 minutes after the 24-metre yacht set sail, around four nautical miles north of Bressay, a fire was detected onboard. READ MORE: Scottish pensioners to be better off than rest of UK after winter fuel changes The blaze was extinguished automatically by the onboard fire suppression system, but the vessel's hydraulics were disabled following the incident, meaning the vessel had no steering or other systems. There were no injuries as a result of the fire. With potentially toxic gases below deck, inspection of the systems at sea was not possible and the skipper of the vessel contacted HM Coastguard for assistance. The RNLI Lerwick Lifeboat was launched just before 3.30pm and the council ferry MV Filla was diverted from her route to stand by in case the stricken yacht was in need of assistance The lifeboat towed the yacht back to the safety of Lerwick Harbour at around 6.30pm. (Image: RNLI Lerwick) The yacht was taken alongside at Alexandra Quay, just north of the Bressay ferry terminal, where she was met by coastguard rescue teams and fire crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who boarded the vessel to carry out safety checks. The vessel will remain in Lerwick Harbour for inspection and repairs. Coxswain Stephen Manson said: 'We were pleased to be able to assist the crew after what must have been a distressing experience to have a fire on board.
