Protest planned in Kalaburagi over sexual assault on minor

The Sakal Hindu Samaj, a consortium of various organizations, has announced a mass protest in Kalaburagi on Tuesday against the sexual assault on a minor in Nandikur Tanda on the outskirts of Kalaburagi. Members of the samaj Divya Hagaragi and Ramchandra Jadhav, addressing the press here on Sunday, said that the religious heads of various mutts, community leaders and several organizations will join the protest march from Jagat Circle to Deputy Commissioner's office. Ms. Hagaragi urged citizens to unite for the 'safety of our daughters'. She said that the accused, Waseem Shaikh, sexually assaulted the minor girl from Nandikur Tanda three weeks ago. Later, the accused, along with his parents and relatives, barged into the victim's house and harassed the girl's parents using abusive language and even forced them to get their daughter married to Waseem Shaikh, she said. A case has been lodged under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (PoCSO) Act at the Gulbarga University Police Station.

Row over dismissal of Muslim workers at Shani Shingnapur temple

MUMBAI: Controversy has erupted over the dismissal of 114 workers from the Muslim community by the Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan, the trust that manages the Shani Shingnapur temple in Ahilyanagar district. The 144 workers are among a total 167 workers who have been dismissed, allegedly on disciplinary grounds, for failure to perform their duties. The temple, in Shani Shingnapur village, in Nevasa tehsil, is patronised by lakhs of devotees from all over the country. The temple trust also runs various public service institutions like hospitals, hostels and solid waste management projects. Last month, a video went viral online, showing Muslim workers performing maintenance work and painting the property. Local BJP workers along with activists of an outfit called the Sakal Hindu Samaj objected, and performed a purification ceremony at the temple. Following protests, the trust dismissed the workers, who had been employed in various departments such as maintenance, solid waste management, agriculture etc. Asked if the action amounted to discrimination based on religion, Tushar Bhosale, who heads the BJP's spiritual cell, said, 'Various organisations are registered with the charity commissioner and we have no objection to Muslims or people from any other religion working there. But the Shani Shingnapur temple is a Hindu shrine running on donations given by Hindus for religious reasons. This money should be used for Hindus only, and we will not allow non-Hindus to work in Hindu shrines.' However, Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan chief executive officer GK Darandale claimed that no one was removed for religious or caste reasons. 'The temple trust employs 2,464 workers but only 900 have been active. We removed the 167 workers for not performing their duties and irregular attendance for the last few months. Along with Muslims, there are Hindus and people from different castes in the list of 167 workers. They were working on a daily-wage basis.'

Maharashtra: After 'no non-Hindus' call, Shani temple fires 114 Muslim staff

Maharashtra: After 'no non-Hindus' call, Shani temple fires 114 Muslim staff NASHIK: The trust managing the Shani Shingnapur shrine in Maharashtra 's Ahilyanagar has recently laid off 167 staffers on "disciplinary grounds". Of them, 114 (68%) are Muslims, a temple source said. The trust, Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan, has attributed the sackings to "non-performance and long absenteeism" but not cited any specific reasons. The staffers, working for 2-10 years, were sacked in two rounds on June 8 and June 13. An outfit named Sakal Hindu Samaj had threatened a protest on June 14 demanding removal of non-Hindus working in the shrine in Shanishingnapur. This followed a viral video in May showing a man, purportedly not a Hindu, carrying out painting work at the shrine. Devasthan CEO Gorakshanath Darandale justified the removals and denied bias. "There is no question of discrimination in the action. Those removed are from different faiths. The action was strictly disciplinary in nature. Over 2,400 employees work with Devasthan. Many do not report to work. Devasthan had held back their salaries and served show-cause notices. This is the first batch against whom action has been taken," Darandale said. Another senior Devasthan official said those sacked "were engaged in agriculture, waste management and education departments of the temple trust". "Some have been absent from work for five months."

Bandh in Pune's Mulshi area after desecration of local deity

Mulshi tehsil observed a complete shutdown after a Muslim minor, 16, entered the Nageshwar temple in Paud and made obscene gestures before desecrating a Goddess Annapurna idol, triggering outrage and prompting over 2,000 locals under the banner of 'Sakal Hindu Samaj' to stage a protest march condemning the act and demanding strict action. The minor was unaware that he was being recorded. Following the incident, a large police deployment, including additional forces, was in place to maintain law and order. The protesters met guardian minister Chandrakant Patil and submitted a memorandum demanding stern legal action. Patil said, 'This act is shameful and inhuman. The accused have been arrested and charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). We are also examining ways to prevent gatherings of thousands for Friday prayers when only 10 Muslims are local residents.' Local resident Somnath Patil said that the video of the act, which has gone viral, left citizens shocked. 'The bandh was peaceful. Residents are united against such anti-social behaviour,' he said. The CCTV footage shows the juvenile entering the temple and making obscene gestures before desecrating the idol, unaware he is being recorded. The video is doing the rounds of social media, further fanning tensions. The police have detained the 16-year-old and arrested his father, Naushad Shaikh, 44. Senior inspector at Paud police station Santosh Girigosavi said that the villagers initially approached the boy's family seeking an apology but were allegedly threatened by the boy's father, forcing them to approach the police. The police said that Shaikh, a bakery worker from Bihar, and his son, a class 4 dropout, had recently moved to the area. Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Barne termed the desecration a deliberate attempt to hurt Hindu sentiments. 'We will not tolerate insults to our religion,' he said. An FIR has been registered under BNS sections 196, 298, 299, 302, 351(2) and 3(5).
