The best sunscreen of 2025 – and the two to avoid
With hot weather sweeping the UK and an amber heatwave warning in place, sunscreen is something we should all be wearing on the parts of our bodies exposed to the sun. But how can you be sure your go-to bottle is doing what it promises? To help shoppers find suncreams they can trust, consumer group Which? tested a range of high street and premium options using official British and international standards. SPF (which protects against UVB rays that cause sunburn) was checked by applying sunscreen to volunteers' skin and exposing it to controlled UVB light. UVA protection (which guards against long-term skin damage and ageing) was tested in the lab by measuring how much of the sun's rays were absorbed through the cream. This year, 13 products passed with flying colours – but two missed the mark in at least one test. This supermarket-own product passed the UVA part of the testing but fell short on SPF protection. According to Which?, lab results showed an SPF of 25.7 and then 20.7 on retest – lower than the SPF30 claim and below the threshold needed to pass. The supermarket told Which? it's "looking closely at the results" and is carrying out further independent testing with its supplier. Ultrasun met the SPF requirement in testing, but failed to hit the minimum UVA protection. Which? recorded a UVA protection factor of 9.1 and 9.5 across two tests, just below the required level of 10. Ultrasun told Which? it is "fully confident in its testing protocols and that its detailed testing processes continue to not only meet, but surpass industry standards." It also said its chosen testing protocol is one of the strictest available. Tested and approved – here are the sunscreens Which? says deliver on sun protection: Boots Soltan Protect & Moisturise Lotion, £5.50 Boots Soltan Protect & Moisturise Spray, £5.50 Nivea Sun Protect & Moisture Lotion, £7.90 Lidl Cien Sun Protect Spray SPF30, £3.79 Sainsbury's Sun Protect Moisturising Lotion, £5.50 Superdrug Solait Sun Spray, £5.50 Garnier Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced Spray SPF50+, £11 Sainsbury's Sun Protect Moisturising Spray Lotion SPF50+, £5.75 Aldi Lacura Sensitive Sun Lotion SPF50+, £2.99 Boots Soltan Protect & Moisturise Lotion SPF50+, £5.50 Nivea Sun Protect & Moisture Spray SPF50+, £7.90 Childs Farm Fragrance-Free Sun Cream SPF50+, £12 Soltan Kids Protect & Moisturise Lotion SPF50+, £5.50 When it comes to SPF, Which? and NHS guidance suggest looking for: A minimum SPF of 30 for UVB protection A UVA protection seal (a circle with 'UVA' inside) or Boots' four- or five-star UVA rating Water resistance if you're swimming or sweating Reapplication every two hours (more if swimming or towelling off) It's worth checking the expiry date too — suncream can lose its effectiveness over time. Kids' skin is around 30% thinner than adults', which means UV rays can cause damage more quickly. Their skin also produces less melanin – the pigment that helps protect against sunburn – so they need extra protection. Look for suncream with SPF 30 or higher, ideally labelled for children or sensitive skin. Water-resistant options are a good bet too, especially if they're splashing about. Wide-brimmed hats, rash vests and UV-protective sunglasses can all help keep them covered. And if you're unsure of a brand to go for before your next top up, Which? has lots of sunscreen information on its website. Suncream helps, but it's just one part of the picture. Here's what the NHS and British Skin Foundation recommend for staying protected during exposure to the sun: Stick to the shade (11am–3pm): UV is strongest midday, so take breaks under trees, parasols or cover –just remember rays can still reflect off water or sand. Cover up well: Wear loose, tightly woven clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with a CE mark, UV‑400 or 100% UV protection. Pick sun-safe fabrics: Look for clothing labelled UPF 30+ – UPF 50+ gives the best protection. Apply early, reapply often: Use sunscreen 30 minutes before heading out, then reapply every 2 hours – or sooner if you're swimming or towelling off. Use enough: Aim for 6–8 teaspoons to cover your whole body – most of us don't use enough. Check the label: Go for SPF 30+ and either 4–5 stars or a UVA-in-a-circle symbol to ensure broad protection. Don't ditch it on cloudy days: UV still gets through clouds and bounces off sand, water and snow – protection's still essential. Dieux Cofounders Launch Sun-Screener, a Tool Meant to Demystify SPF Filters for the Masses
Dieux cofounders Charlotte Palermino and Joyce de Lemos are looking to tackle SPF misinformation. The duo are launching a virtual tool, called Sun-Screener, which allows users to copy-paste the ingredient list of an SPF product in order to receive confirmation of its efficacy, plus breakdowns of active UV filters in the formula, how they each work, and in which regions they are approved for use. More from WWD Sesame Oil Skin Care: The Secret to Hydrated Skin or a Recipe for Clogged Pores? Clinique Doubles Down on Growth Strategy With More Launches, First TV Ad in a Decade Melanie Grant Partners With Violet Grey for New York Studio Opening The launch comes at a time when the sun care market — propelled by TikTok, the virality of Korean and Australian SPF brands around the world, and proliferating launches — is booming. But as the category has grown so, too, has misinformation surrounding it. 'We want to empower people with the information to make their own choices in an unbiased way — for us, that looks like stating the facts as they are, and making them easily accessible,' said de Lemos, who is also Dieux's cosmetic chemist. In recent months a movement toward beef tallow as an SPF alternative has gained momentum online, while influencer Nara Smith also took to TikTok to share how she makes her sunscreen from scratch, sparking a conversation about the viability of homemade SPF (which was quickly denounced by dermatologists). In addition, usage of product-scanning apps like Yuka, which designate ingredients as 'high-risk' or 'risk-free' without taking into account ingredient quantity or form of delivery — which are often key to determining ingredient safety — is soaring. 'We want to get people to wear sunscreen, but also to educate them in a nonjudgmental way, where we're not saying something is 'good' or something is 'bad' — that creates fear, not education,' said Palermino, who is known for creating content that makes skin care knowledge accessible to her 700,000-plus collective social media followers. Sun-Screener, developed and peer-reviewed alongside cosmetic chemists Rebecca Perry and Ava Perkins, briefs users on more than 35 different UV filters — from mineral filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to chemical filters like avobenzone, octocrylene and more. The brand will also build out a blog component addressing common SPF-related questions tied to the tool, which is accessible via Dieux's own direct-to-consumer site. 'The fun thing about Sun-Screener is that there's no 'bad' answer: it's either, good news — your sunscreen has sunscreen in it — you're fine! Or, we need more information,' said Palermino. Eventually, the tool could involve a feature enabling users to contact their representatives to request action regarding long-stalled FDA approval of newer, more sophisticated chemical SPF filters, many of which are available in other countries, hence the popularity of international SPF brands. 'We want to create a zero-fear environment to help people understand what's in their products, in a way where it's clear that sunscreen is good,' Palermino said. A beach towel clip you can attach to a beach chair to stop it from blowing away while you're off gallivanting in the ocean trying to make friends with a mermaid. This conveniently sticks to the top of your microwave so you can pop it right off whenever you're looking to tear up some broccoli cheddar on a wild Tuesday night. A double-sided cutting board *and* defrosting board with enough capabilities to make your lil' brain spin. One side of the board is made with food-grade stainless steel for cutting meat while the other is made with wheat straw for cutting fruits and veggies, helping save cutting board space and preventing cross-contamination. But reviewers also note that the stainless-steel side is *excellent* for defrosting meat faster, and the built-in garlic grinder on the wheat straw side is also a handy little time saver! A set of legging organizing hangers for anyone who owns approximately [number redacted] pairs that are currently tangled in a dresser drawer like a giant athleisure nest. This will not only free up space, but give you easy access so you're not rooting through them for the One Pair That Makes Your Butt Look Good. A laundry soap station that will help organize your space *and* serve as a handy drip tray for your detergent, so you don't have to lug that jumbo container like a lumberjack every time you need to squeeze a few suds out for a load. This also helps ensure you get every last drop out of the container! A set of paint touch-up pens to quickly deal with lil' scuff and scratch marks that pop up on your walls without having to do the whole song and dance of whipping out a giant roller brush. (Ah, we love the fresh smell of "getting my deposit back" in the morning.) Birdie, an indoor carbon dioxide monitor that — bless her dramatic heart — flips over and "dies" if the air quality in your home goes down, prompting you to open a window or run an air purifier so you can breathe easier. Once Birdie is happy with the air quality again, she'll pop back up! "The Clean Ball," which is a nifty little gizmo you can stick in your purse or bag to pick up all the crumbs and debris that settle down there — now it'll be clean as a whistle whenever you go rooting through it, and you won't have to get all the "ick!!" on your belongings. A "Magic Tap" automatic drink dispenser as the ultimate parent hack — this battery-operated, spillproof system easily slides into jugs of water, milk, and juice in your fridge to make it easy for kids to serve themselves. Essentially it means a whole lot more independence for the kiddos, and a WHOLE lot more convenience for you. A set of darling reusable Swedish dishcloths that can be washed up to 50 times in the dishwasher, and are designed to replace 17 (!!) rolls of paper towels each. These are strong enough to tackle tough stains and grime, but gentle enough that they won't scratch cookware or hurt your skin.

Best sunscreen deals on our tried and tested favourites
Sunscreen is essential, but it can be surprisingly expensive. If you're stocking up on sunscreen for a family holiday, you'll know that packing enough SPF to keep everyone safe can soon add up. The good news is that sunscreen is often available on sale. Whether you need a body sunscreen to pack in your suitcase this summer or a reliable SPF moisturiser to wear all year round, there are plenty of deals to be found on some of our favourite tried and tested formulas. We've rooted through the best deals at Boots, Amazon, Lookfantastic and more to bring you the best offers. This will ensure that you never have to pay full price for your sun protection. If you're heading off on holiday soon, don't wait until you're at the airport to buy your sunscreen. Prices are often higher airside, so if you're checking in a suitcase, stock up before you travel. You might be tempted to buy travel-sized sunscreens if you're only travelling with hand luggage. However, you'll likely end up paying more per 100ml, and if you use the recommended amount (six to eight teaspoons to cover your whole body), you may need to top up while on holiday. Our top tip is to use the Boots airside click and collect service. You'll have to pay a £4.50 fee and select a delivery date at least three days before you fly, but this gives you the chance to make full use of Boots' wide range of online sunscreen offers. Keep scrolling for the best deals on body and face sunscreens. We'll be keeping this page updated throughout the summer, so you can bookmark it and return it when you need to stock up on SPF. If you're looking for a sunscreen to take on your family holiday, you can't go wrong with our best sunscreen for kids from La Roche Posay's trusty anthelios range. Our tester found that the spray 'wasn't greasy and sank in very quickly with no ghostly white faces'. It also suited her kids' sensitive skin, causing no irritation. For a limited time, you can get 35 per cent off the kids' sunscreen at Amazon, and you won't find it cheaper elsewhere. The 200ml bottle lasted our tester a month when using it with her three children and with multiple reapplications, so it's the perfect size to pack in your suitcase. For an extra boost of hydration, we're big fans of this sunscreen lotion from Hawaiian Tropic. Thanks to the addition of cocoa and shea butter, our tester found that 'it sinks in quickly and leaves the skin feeling supple and nourished'. We named it our best budget body sunscreen, and now at Amazon, you can get it at more than half off. If you want to stock up on more Hawaiian Tropic SPF products, you can also find the range reduced by up to half price at Boots. Right now at Boots, you can save 20 per cent on selected Ultrasun sunscreens, including our best body sunscreen, the Ultrasun extreme SPF50. Our tester praised the 'lightweight' cream for absorbing quickly into the skin, which made it easy to reapply throughout the day. Boots isn't the only retailer to reduce the price of the sunscreen. You can also snap up the deal at Sephora and Amazon. This 'invisible' sunscreen spray makes reapplication a breeze, thanks to its non-sticky formula and easy-to-use nozzle. Our tester loved its classic coconut scent, too. Now at Boots, you can get it for 20 per cent off. If you miss out on this offer, head to Amazon, where you can find it for the same price. We're big fans of Sol de Janeiro's SPF range at Indybest, so we're pleased to see that its radiance body spray has 35 per cent off at Cult Beauty. The SPF spray has Sol de Janeiro's signature coconut scent and comes out as a mist, which our beauty writer, Lucy, said 'keeps the SPF targeted at your body'. She added, 'It felt light yet moisturising and left a flattering sheen.' Our best sunscreen for acne-prone skin now has more than a third off at Amazon, but as one of the online retailer's limited-time offers, the deal isn't set to be around for long. The lightweight formula was 'neither too oily nor too matte' for our tester, and she found it blended easily into her skin. The 50ml bottle is also the perfect size to fit in your hand luggage this summer. Another fantastic sunscreen for acne-prone skin is Heliocare's oil-free gel SPF, which we named our best face sunscreen. After adding it to her daily routine, our tester found that it survived 'several sweaty workouts' and layered beautifully under make-up. Right now, you can save 25 per cent on the brand at Boots and Lookfantastic, making it the perfect time to stock up. We've also spotted a 30 per cent discount on one of our favourite SPF moisturisers from Fenty. Our beauty writer, Lucy, described the SPF30 as 'creamy, lightweight and thirst-quenching for dehydrated skin' and praised its 'soothing and healing' ingredients. The savings don't stop there either. Once you've got to the end of the sunscreen, you can buy a refill, which is around £5 cheaper than buying it brand new. We've also spotted a deal on the TikTok-viral sun rice SPF50 from Beauty of Joseon, with Lookfantastic offering 20 per cent off. I've used this SPF for a few months now and can attest to its hydrating and nourishing claims. I've found that it doesn't disrupt make-up or leave a white cast on my warm skin tone. Lucy recommends this Garnier SPF50 fluid for those who don't like the feeling of a heavy sunscreen against their skin. She found that 'it doesn't pill' and that the ingredients 'work to absorb excess oil on your skin throughout the day'. Boots currently has a third off selected Garnier products, but we've got a handy tip to help you slash the price even further. If you use the discount code SUN20, you'll get an additional 20 per cent off, bringing it down to £6.93. We're big fans of CeraVe, including its SPF50 facial moisturising lotion. While lots of SPF moisturisers focus on oil-control, Lucy wrote that 'it was refreshing to see ceramides included' for dry skin types. Amazon has slashed the price of the SPF lotion by almost 45 per cent, bringing it to less than £9. You won't find it this cheap anywhere else at the moment, but as it's a limited-time offer, you don't have long to snap it up.

Glastonbury bound? Here are the beauty essentials to pack
Forget complex contouring and multi-step skincare routines, if our faces survive three days of sun, rain biodegradable glitter, cider mist, dust and rogue sleeping bag zips at Glastonbury we are surely winning? But with the UK's biggest (and arguably best) festival around the corner, it's about time to start editing your beauty bag down to the real ride-or-dies - the things that will keep you going - and glowing when your bathing access is more wet-wipe than waterfall shower. If time is short, no problem. Here are my picks. Whether it's blazing hot. British drizzle or back-to-back clouds, SPF is a must. Opt for those that won't slide off by 3pm, even if you're dancing really hard. Ultra Violette Supreme Screen Hydrating Facial Skinscreen SPF50, (£34, is one of my faves; super-light, it doesn't pill under makeup. Top up as the day goes on with Garnier Vitamin C Over Makeup UV SPF50 Mist, (£12.99, Featherweight, it brightens tired skin. Kopari Sunglaze Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen SPF30, (£35, meanwhile, is a shimmering, hydrating, coconut-infused beauty that delivers supple, gleaming festival-worthy limbs. And remember nothing ruins the fun like burnt lips, so don't forget your Ultrasun Lip Protection SPF50 (£8, This year I discovered Lisa Eldridge's Seamless Skin Enhancing Tint, (£37, a self-proclaimed ' Fresh, luminous and light coverage tint in a feel-good formula made of 78% skincare ingredients.' Not only is it pocket-friendly, but it is also packed with superlative skincare, plus looks and feels like your own skin - but better. Delivering plump-ness but also support, it is supple, but not slippery. I don't even need to powder . Heaven! Clarin's Skin Illusion Tinted Moisturiser SPF25, (£45, is another trusty option. I'm more than a little captivated by Prada's Dimension Eyeshadow in Poetry, (£67, The payoff is mega and I love the metal foil effect of that pink. If you can't wear sparkle at Glastonbury, where can you? Charlotte Tilbury's new Unreal Blush Healthy Glow Sticks, (£30, are great multitaskers. I wear mine not just on my cheeks, but my lips and eyelids too. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara, (£12.99, is a total winner for festivals. Last but not least, makeup artist Francesca Abrahamovitch told me about ONE/SIZE On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Spray (£15 at and I have loved it ever since. It holds make up in place like a dream, keeping it looking fresher for longer. We're not washing our hair at Glasto are we? Typebea G5 3-in-1 Dry Shampoo (£26, refreshes roots and strands without a whiff of residue, but also incorporates a host of clever scalp-nurturing actives. Hair by Sam Mcknight Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo (£24, is another great option, and smells like a dream. When it comes to festival styling, keep things simple. Hershesons Air Dry Spray with UV Protection, (£18.00, enhances your natural texture without salt, crunch or stickiness and now comes with built-in UV protection to guard against colour fade and sun damage. Just don't forget your Tangle Teaser! (£15, Your thirsty festival skin will love hot new South Korean import Belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb, (£32, With hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, it can revitalise even the most lacklustre, dehydrated faces fast. When it's 3am and you're in a tent, wet wipes are the way to go. Waterwipes, (£2.99, are plant-based, plastic free and suitable for even the most sensitive skin. Soak them in Bioderma's mini Sensibio H2O Cleansing Micellar Water, (£6.50, to remove glitter and waterproof makeup. Between 24/7 dancing, warm pints of lager and queues for the water taps, festival dehydration is real. Hot new Aussie import Swiish Recharge Hydration + Electrolytes, (£20 for 20, is formulated for hydration and recovery, working to replenish lost electrolytes fast. Tip one of these cute little sachets into your water bottle daily and pretend it's wellness, not survival.
