The best sunscreen of 2025 – and the two to avoid
With hot weather sweeping the UK and an amber heatwave warning in place, sunscreen is something we should all be wearing on the parts of our bodies exposed to the sun. But how can you be sure your go-to bottle is doing what it promises? To help shoppers find suncreams they can trust, consumer group Which? tested a range of high street and premium options using official British and international standards. SPF (which protects against UVB rays that cause sunburn) was checked by applying sunscreen to volunteers' skin and exposing it to controlled UVB light. UVA protection (which guards against long-term skin damage and ageing) was tested in the lab by measuring how much of the sun's rays were absorbed through the cream. This year, 13 products passed with flying colours – but two missed the mark in at least one test. This supermarket-own product passed the UVA part of the testing but fell short on SPF protection. According to Which?, lab results showed an SPF of 25.7 and then 20.7 on retest – lower than the SPF30 claim and below the threshold needed to pass. The supermarket told Which? it's "looking closely at the results" and is carrying out further independent testing with its supplier. Ultrasun met the SPF requirement in testing, but failed to hit the minimum UVA protection. Which? recorded a UVA protection factor of 9.1 and 9.5 across two tests, just below the required level of 10. Ultrasun told Which? it is "fully confident in its testing protocols and that its detailed testing processes continue to not only meet, but surpass industry standards." It also said its chosen testing protocol is one of the strictest available. Kids' skin is around 30% thinner than adults', which means UV rays can cause damage more quickly. Their skin also produces less melanin – the pigment that helps protect against sunburn – so they need extra protection. Look for suncream with SPF 30 or higher, ideally labelled for children or sensitive skin. Water-resistant options are a good bet too, especially if they're splashing about. Wide-brimmed hats, rash vests and UV-protective sunglasses can all help keep them covered. And if you're unsure of a brand to go for before your next top up, Which? has lots of sunscreen information on its website. Suncream helps, but it's just one part of the picture. Here's what the NHS and British Skin Foundation recommend for staying protected during exposure to the sun: Stick to the shade (11am–3pm): UV is strongest midday, so take breaks under trees, parasols or cover –just remember rays can still reflect off water or sand. Cover up well: Wear loose, tightly woven clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with a CE mark, UV‑400 or 100% UV protection. Pick sun-safe fabrics: Look for clothing labelled UPF 30+ – UPF 50+ gives the best protection. Apply early, reapply often: Use sunscreen 30 minutes before heading out, then reapply every 2 hours – or sooner if you're swimming or towelling off. Use enough: Aim for 6–8 teaspoons to cover your whole body – most of us don't use enough. Check the label: Go for SPF 30+ and either 4–5 stars or a UVA-in-a-circle symbol to ensure broad protection. Don't ditch it on cloudy days: UV still gets through clouds and bounces off sand, water and snow – protection's still essential. Dieux Cofounders Launch Sun-Screener, a Tool Meant to Demystify SPF Filters for the Masses
Dieux cofounders Charlotte Palermino and Joyce de Lemos are looking to tackle SPF misinformation. The duo are launching a virtual tool, called Sun-Screener, which allows users to copy-paste the ingredient list of an SPF product in order to receive confirmation of its efficacy, plus breakdowns of active UV filters in the formula, how they each work, and in which regions they are approved for use. But as the category has grown so, too, has misinformation surrounding it. 'We want to empower people with the information to make their own choices in an unbiased way — for us, that looks like stating the facts as they are, and making them easily accessible,' said de Lemos, who is also Dieux's cosmetic chemist. In recent months a movement toward beef tallow as an SPF alternative has gained momentum online, while influencer Nara Smith also took to TikTok to share how she makes her sunscreen from scratch, sparking a conversation about the viability of homemade SPF (which was quickly denounced by dermatologists). In addition, usage of product-scanning apps like Yuka, which designate ingredients as 'high-risk' or 'risk-free' without taking into account ingredient quantity or form of delivery — which are often key to determining ingredient safety — is soaring. 'We want to get people to wear sunscreen, but also to educate them in a nonjudgmental way, where we're not saying something is 'good' or something is 'bad' — that creates fear, not education,' said Palermino, who is known for creating content that makes skin care knowledge accessible to her 700,000-plus collective social media followers. Sun-Screener, developed and peer-reviewed alongside cosmetic chemists Rebecca Perry and Ava Perkins, briefs users on more than 35 different UV filters — from mineral filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to chemical filters like avobenzone, octocrylene and more. The brand will also build out a blog component addressing common SPF-related questions tied to the tool, which is accessible via Dieux's own direct-to-consumer site. 'The fun thing about Sun-Screener is that there's no 'bad' answer: it's either, good news — your sunscreen has sunscreen in it — you're fine! Or, we need more information,' said Palermino. Sunscreen is essential, but it can be surprisingly expensive. If you're stocking up on sunscreen for a family holiday, you'll know that packing enough SPF to keep everyone safe can soon add up. The good news is that sunscreen is often available on sale. Whether you need a body sunscreen to pack in your suitcase this summer or a reliable SPF moisturiser to wear all year round, there are plenty of deals to be found on some of our favourite tried and tested formulas. We've rooted through the best deals at Boots, Amazon, Lookfantastic and more to bring you the best offers. This will ensure that you never have to pay full price for your sun protection. If you're heading off on holiday soon, don't wait until you're at the airport to buy your sunscreen. Prices are often higher airside, so if you're checking in a suitcase, stock up before you travel. You might be tempted to buy travel-sized sunscreens if you're only travelling with hand luggage. However, you'll likely end up paying more per 100ml, and if you use the recommended amount (six to eight teaspoons to cover your whole body), you may need to top up while on holiday. Our top tip is to use the Boots airside click and collect service. Right now at Boots, you can save 20 per cent on selected Ultrasun sunscreens, including our best body sunscreen, the Ultrasun extreme SPF50. Our tester praised the 'lightweight' cream for absorbing quickly into the skin, which made it easy to reapply throughout the day. Boots isn't the only retailer to reduce the price of the sunscreen. You can also snap up the deal at Sephora and Amazon. This 'invisible' sunscreen spray makes reapplication a breeze, thanks to its non-sticky formula and easy-to-use nozzle. Our tester loved its classic coconut scent, too. Now at Boots, you can get it for 20 per cent off. If you miss out on this offer, head to Amazon, where you can find it for the same price. We're big fans of Sol de Janeiro's SPF range at Indybest, so we're pleased to see that its radiance body spray has 35 per cent off at Cult Beauty. The SPF spray has Sol de Janeiro's signature coconut scent and comes out as a mist, which our beauty writer, Lucy, said 'keeps the SPF targeted at your body'. She added, 'It felt light yet moisturising and left a flattering sheen.' Our best sunscreen for acne-prone skin now has more than a third off at Amazon, but as one of the online retailer's limited-time offers, the deal isn't set to be around for long. The lightweight formula was 'neither too oily nor too matte' for our tester, and she found it blended easily into her skin. The 50ml bottle is also the perfect size to fit in your hand luggage this summer. Another fantastic sunscreen for acne-prone skin is Heliocare's oil-free gel SPF, which we named our best face sunscreen. After adding it to her daily routine, our tester found that it survived 'several sweaty workouts' and layered beautifully under make-up. Right now, you can save 25 per cent on the brand at Boots and Lookfantastic, making it the perfect time to stock up. We've also spotted a 30 per cent discount on one of our favourite SPF moisturisers from Fenty. Our beauty writer, Lucy, described the SPF30 as 'creamy, lightweight and thirst-quenching for dehydrated skin' and praised its 'soothing and healing' ingredients. The savings don't stop there either. Once you've got to the end of the sunscreen, you can buy a refill, which is around £5 cheaper than buying it brand new. We've also spotted a deal on the TikTok-viral sun rice SPF50 from Beauty of Joseon, with Lookfantastic offering 20 per cent off. I've used this SPF for a few months now and can attest to its hydrating and nourishing claims. I've found that it doesn't disrupt make-up or leave a white cast on my warm skin tone. Lucy recommends this Garnier SPF50 fluid for those who don't like the feeling of a heavy sunscreen against their skin. She found that 'it doesn't pill' and that the ingredients 'work to absorb excess oil on your skin throughout the day'. Boots currently has a third off selected Garnier products, but we've got a handy tip to help you slash the price even further. If you use the discount code SUN20, you'll get an additional 20 per cent off, bringing it down to £6.93. We're big fans of CeraVe, including its SPF50 facial moisturising lotion. While lots of SPF moisturisers focus on oil-control, Lucy wrote that 'it was refreshing to see ceramides included' for dry skin types. Amazon has slashed the price of the SPF lotion by almost 45 per cent, bringing it to less than £9. You won't find it this cheap anywhere else at the moment, but as it's a limited-time offer, you don't have long to snap it up.
