South Coast Repertory gets an assist after losing NEA funding for ‘The Staircase'

South Coast Repertory found itself in a bind last month, when officials learned on opening day for the final production of the 2024-25 season, 'The Staircase,' it would be losing $20,000 in promised federal funding. But with a little help from a philanthropic organization started by a Newport Beach family, whose founder heard about the loss and stepped up to replace the lost grant money, the show and the season went off without a hitch. Although the National Endowment of the Arts had initially awarded the grant to SCR in November, the agency informed the Costa Mesa theater company in a May 2 email the funding had been withdrawn, due to the updating of grant-making priorities to projects that aligned with missions prioritized by the Trump administration. A list of fundable projects, the email explained, included those that elevate historically Black colleges and universities and Hispanic-serving institutions, celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, foster AI competency, empower houses of worship to service communities, foster skilled trade jobs and support the military and veterans, among others. The loss in funding, far from the total cost of the project, helped support the work of several skilled technicians and was a 'meaningful amount of money,' SCR Managing Director Suzanne Appel told City News Service in May. So when officials learned a short time later that the OneRoot Foundation, which had never before worked with South Coast Repertory, had offered to fill the budgetary gap left by the NEA's withdrawal, they were a little stunned and deeply touched. 'It was incredibly generous and life-affirming support that says something about what they stand for,' SCR Artistic Director David Ivers said of the foundation's gift Tuesday. 'We cannot say thanks enough.' Founded in 2021 by the Pyle family of Newport Beach, the OneRoot Foundation supports a number of causes through private grantmaking and volunteerism. Trustee David A. Pyle, also founder and chief executive of American Career College, said the gift was made in honor of his father, actor Denver Pyle, who portrayed 'Uncle Jesse' Duke in the TV series 'The Dukes of Hazzard' and racked up more than 200 film and television credits throughout a 50-year career. Robert May, the executive director overseeing OneRoot Foundation's philanthropic efforts, said the organization was proud to support SCR, where he and his family have attended annual productions of 'A Christmas Carol' for more than 25 years. 'We believe in doing what is right, so seeing the NEA pull its funding the day of the opening with no warning was disappointing, to say the least,' May said in a June 11 news release. 'We wanted to make it right and assure that South Coast Repertory had the funding required to complete 'The Staircase.' We support the vision of SCR to engage and enrich our community with outstanding programs.' Just as OneRoot Foundation pledged its support, SCR filed an appeal to the National Endowment for the Arts to reinstate the withdrawn award. Officials maintain 'The Staircase' meets the administration's guidelines favoring projects that benefit skilled laborers and tribal communities. Written by native Hawaiian playwright Noa Gardner, 'The Staircase' told the story of a Hawaiian family and celebrated culture through ancestral myths, legends and music, exploring the relationship between Hawaii and the mainland U.S. Its cast and crew featured three native Hawaiian actors and music director and dramatist Mehanaoakala Hind. 'It's astonishing to me we're presenting the world premiere of a play that takes place in one of our 50 states, from a community that's been largely ignored as it relates to three-dimensional art on the stage,' Ivers said of the funding withdrawal decision. 'That's as un-American as you can get.' South Coast Repertory as of Tuesday had not yet learned whether a decision had been made on the theater company's appeal to the NEA.

Suez Canal's 'Ismailia 1' Becomes Middle East's Largest Rescue Tug

The launch of Ismailia 1 marks a milestone in Egypt's maritime strategy, with eco-friendly design, high bollard pull, and plans to expand shipbuilding across national and private sectors. Jun 18, 2025 The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has introduced the Middle East's most powerful rescue tug, Ismailia 1, as part of its ongoing effort to modernise canal operations and enhance environmental sustainability. Built by Alexandria Shipyard (ASY), the vessel is the first of two tugs commissioned to support the authority's fleet. With a bollard pull capacity of 190 tons, Ismailia 1 measures 71.6 metres in length, 18.5 metres in width, has a draft of 7 metres, and can reach speeds of up to 16 knots. The tug is equipped with a Dynamic Positioning (DP) system for precision manoeuvring and a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that reduces carbon emissions — a key element of the SCA's 'Green Canal' initiative. The launch marks the most extensive expansion of the SCA's tugboat fleet in three decades. Thirty new vessels have already been added, with bollard pull capacities ranging from 9 to 190 tons, aimed at strengthening canal operations and emergency response capabilities. The project also aligns with Egypt's broader maritime strategy to enhance domestic shipbuilding capacity and foster strategic industrial partnerships. Alexandria Shipyard, founded in 1962 and operating under the Ministry of Defence, has been a central force in the country's maritime sector, responsible for a large share of Egypt's commercial fleet and the nation's only domestically built oil rig. The construction of Ismailia 1 supports the SCA's localisation goals by developing internal manufacturing capabilities in collaboration with public institutions and private sector partners. The second vessel in the series, Ismailia 2, is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2025.

ECoR writes to SCR proposing augmentation of AC Sleeper coaches on Double Decker express from Vizag to Tirupati

East Coast Railway (ECoR) has sent a proposal to the South Central Railway (SCR) for augmentation of additional AC coaches by train No. 22708/08 (Visakhapatnam-Tirupati-Visakhapatnam) Double Decker express. In a letter to the Chief Traffic Planning Manager of SCR the Chief Commercial Manager of ECoR noted that 22707/08, which is owned by SCR, is running during night time with occupancy of 122.24% from Visakhapatnam, and 114.25% from Tirupati. The train is departing from Visakhapatnam at 11 p.m. and reaching Tirupati at 12.30 p.m. In the return direction, it is leaving Tirupati at 9.50 p.m. and arriving in Visakhapatnam at 10.40 a.m. Presently, only two trains 18521/22 Tirumala daily express and 22707/08 Tri-Weekly Double Decker express are running directly from Visakhapatnam to Tirupati. Most of the passengers are travelling to Tirupati for darshan of Lord Balaji. The composition of 22707/08 is 10 coaches, including two LWLRRM (Luggage, Generator and Brake Van) coaches and eight LWSCZDAC (Chair Car) coaches. The daily average number of passengers boarding this train is 1,170 from Visakhapatnam, and 1,096 from Tirupati for the period April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025. Acting on a letter written by ZRUCC Member K. Eswar, the ECoR official wrote to the SCR CPTM that passengers like senior citizens, Divyangjan, patients, pregnant women and families with children are utilising this train. They are facing lot of difficulties due to lack of AC Sleeper coaches. As this train is running during night time, passengers expect facilities that allow them to rest properly. The existing composition of Double Decker train does not meet passenger needs, resulting in discomfort to them. The ECoR CCM proposed augmentation of AC coaches, i.e., 2 A, 3 A and 3 E class coaches either temporarily or permanently on train no. 22707/08 Tri-Weekly Double Decker Express.

SCR launches ‘Alpha Inspector' app for chief loco inspectors

South Central Railway (SCR) GM Arun Kumar Jain has launched the 'Alpha Inspector' Application - a web and mobile platform leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and GPS technologies. Designed to enhance chief loco inspectors' efficiency, the application automates movement tracking and record-keeping, reducing manual workload. It provides real-time access to loco pilot (LP) and assistant loco pilot (ALP) operational data, enabling quicker responses to anomalies at divisional and zonal levels. Earlier, he held a video conference with his divisional managers where he reiterated that safety is paramount in railway operations, emphasising strict adherence to safety protocols and the avoidance of shortcut methods. Special emphasis was placed on safety measures at road under bridges (RUBs) and level crossings, with instructions to install at least two height gauges at all RUBs to enhance track safety. Addressing recent incidents, he reviewed cattle run-over cases, stressing the necessity of pro-active measures to prevent disruptions in train movement. The status of fencing along vulnerable track sections was also examined. On Saturday, the GM had flagged off and pedalled during the 'Fit India Cyclothon' event along with other officials at Railway Sports Complex, Secunderabad. The event was organised by SCR Sports Association as part of the Khelo India Scheme's FIT INDIA initiative and with an objective of integrating fitness into the daily routine.
