Man accused of murdering Scottish gangsters in Spain appears in court

More info The man accused of murdering Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan in Spain appeared in court on Friday. Michael Terrence Riley from the Merseyside area, was arrested by local officers last week in connection with the deaths of Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan after an international arrest warrant was issued by Spanish cops, the Daily Record. He is charged with two counts of murder and one of possession of a firearm over the incident which saw Monaghan, 43, and Lyons, 46, killed at Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola. Riley first appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 19, but the hearing was delayed due to technical issues. During a brief hearing today, a court date for his next appearance was set. Riley, who is represented in court by specialist extradition lawyer Renata Pinter, will appear again before the same court next month, on July 18. He was remanded in custody until then. The full hearing, where Riley will challenge extradition, is scheduled for October 9 this year. The Lyons crime clan has been locked in a deadly feud with the rival Daniel mob for a quarter of a century, following the theft of drugs from a Glasgow safe house in 2001. A top Spanish cop told reporters the assassinations of Monaghan and Lyons are part of the feud, claiming that Riley is a member of the Daniel gang. Speaking at a press conference in Spain, Pedro Agudo Novo said: "The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs. "In this case we are not talking about an independent hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniels gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang." Scottish police, who have been investigating the war between the rival crime syndicates for decades, seemed to suggest the killing had nothing to do with their rivalry - or the war on the Daniel mob being waged by Lyons associate Ross McGill. Henchmen of the Dubai-based former Rangers ultra - who headed the Union Bears fan group and is nicknamed 'Miami' - have waged war on the Daniel mob and associates for the last few months. The feud has seen a number of homes, people and businesses targeted in firebombings, knife attacks and shootings, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas, and is being investigated by Police Scotland as part of Operation Portaledge.

Michael Riley, 44, appeared in court in the latest stage of the extradition proceedings. The man accused of gunning down Eddie Lyons and Ross Monaghan in Spain appeared in court today. ‘Hitman' accused of murdering gang kingpins Ross Monaghan & Eddie Lyons Junior in Spain will fight extradition
Michael Riley, 44, of Merseyside, appeared today at Westminster Magistrates Court as part of a bid to have him shipped to Spain Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AN ALLEGED hitman nicked over the murders of two Scots gangsters is to fight extradition - as he claimed he was being intimidated by onlookers in court. Michael Riley, 44, of Huyton, Liverpool, appeared today at Westminster Magistrates Court as part of a bid to have him shipped to Spain. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Eddie Lyons Jnr, left, and Ross Monaghan were shot dead in Spain on May 31 Cops there issued an international arrest warrant in connection with their probe into the May 31 murders of Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jnr, 46. Riley was apprehended by Merseyside police on June 13 under an international arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities last week. Riley was remanded in custody by magistrates on Saturday after he was deemed a flight risk. He appeared at the London court via videolink from HMP Wandsworth yesterday but due to technical difficulties the hearing could not go ahead effectively. He appeared in person wearing a grey, prison-issued tracksuit and spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. Riley was asked today by the court clerk if he wished to give consent to be extradited back to Spain, to which he said: 'No, I do not.' Riley's extradition hearing will be on October 9 at Westminster Magistrates court and is expected to last all day. Judge John Bristow said: 'As you know, Mr Riley, your extradition is sought by Spain, you have not consented to your extradition, so there is going to be a hearing on October 9. 'If you don't come to that hearing, it can proceed without you. That would mean you would not get the chance to tell your side of the story. 'You are not applying for bail today, so I am going to remand you in custody. 'Your next appearance will be on July 18, where on that occasion you will be on live television link.' Riley accused a member of the public in the public gallery of staring at him and making funny faces. He shouted: 'Stop looking at me' as he was led back to the cells. We told how the Lyons gang kingpins were drinking in Monaghans bar after watching the Champions League Cup final when they were gunned down. A hooded assassin was captured on CCTV storming the boozer and shooting both men dead in front of horrified holiday makers and staff. We told how cops in Spain and Scotland gave conflicting information over who is believed to have ordered the double assassination. Police Scotland first insisted three days after the slaughter they had 'no intelligence' to suggest the murders were connected to an ongoing turf war here. However, at a sensational press conference in Malaga their Spain counterparts said the man they want extradited over the killings was 'an internal member of the rival Daniel gang'. Malaga-based police chief Pedro Agudo Novo told reporters: "The double murder was carried out by a professional killer and member of one of the victims' rival gangs. "In this case we're not talking about an independently hired killer but an internal member of the rival Daniel gang who ends up assassinating two members of an enemy gang." That prompted the Scottish force to repeat their insistence there is no Daniel link to the slayings - a position also held by members of Monaghan's family. A relative of the murdered mob boss said earlier this month: 'The one thing people need to know is the Daniels are not behind this.' Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston said: "We are not aware of any current evidence which suggests the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge.' We told how a captured mobile phone holds the key to proving the assassinations in Spain of two Scots crime kingpins are linked to their Daniel gang rivals, sources claim. Cops are understood to have seized the mobile from an alleged hitman suspected of shooting dead the duo. Insiders say it contains data allegedly linking Riley, 44, to Daniel hoods who Spanish detectives reckon are behind the double slaying. Career criminal Monaghan – who fled Scotland for Spain after a failed attempt on his life in 2017 – was tried but acquitted over the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll at an Asda car park in 2010. In August 2017 he and Eddie Lyons Jr, both members of the Lyons Glasgow crime family, were cleared of being involved in a brutal street attack on three men outside the Campsie bar in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire. Their deaths come amid an ongoing turf war in Scotland that's resulted in 48 arrests as part of Police Scotland's Operation Portaledge. The gangland carnage in Edinburgh and Glasgow began in March amid claims Dubai-based hood Ross 'Miami' McGill, 31, of East Kilbride sought revenge after blaming associates of caged capital kingpin Mark Richardson, 38, for using fake notes in a dodgy £500,000 cocaine deal.

What are the odds Iowa football goes undefeated in 2025?
What are the odds Iowa football goes undefeated in 2025? Could the 2025 season have some magic in store for the Iowa Hawkeyes? Is it possible that they could run the table and go undefeated given their slate? It isn't necessarily the most likely, but based on the odds, crazier things have happened. The Hawkeyes are the beneficiaries of getting seven of their 12 games at home inside Kinnick Stadium, two of which appear to be their most difficult games on paper. At home this year, in order, Iowa gets UAlbany, UMass, Indiana, Penn State, Minnesota, Oregon, and Michigan State. The matchups against Penn State and Oregon, two teams that made the 2024 College Football Playoff, are their toughest tests. While the slate has just five road trips, the Week 2 trip takes Iowa to Iowa State for an early-season battle. The road slate, in order, takes Iowa to Iowa State, Rutgers, Wisconsin, USC, and Nebraska. So, can Iowa run the table and go undefeated? According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Hawkeyes have the eighth-best odds to go undefeated, with odds of +6500. At the top of the odds are the usual players in the Big Ten and national championship landscape. Ohio State (+400), Oregon (+440), and Penn State (+490) are the most likely to run the table with their regular-season slates. Michigan sits with +1100 odds, and the upstart Illinois Fighting Illini, who many view as a sleeper, have +2800 odds to go undefeated. Rounding out the list before Iowa is Nebraska with +4000 odds and USC at +4800. Old clip of bikers does not show group supporting LA immigration raids
"On the way to California to back Ice Agents... and deport the criminals illegals. Lets go MAGA," text over footage of a large crowd of motorcycle riders reads in a TikTok video published June 10, 2025. The same video received hundreds more interactions on X. Image A screenshot of a TikTok post taken June 16, 2025 Protests opposing ICE raids and deportation efforts have been ongoing since June 6 in Los Angeles. Trump has pounced on sporadic violent incidents at the rallies to deploy 4,000 National Guards and 700 Marines to the city, o directed federal to ramp up deportation efforts in Democratic-led cities on June 15, doubling down on the politicized anti-immigration drive. FP debunked several out-of-context images falsely linked to the situation as the protests have attracted foreign adversaries of the United States to amplify disinformation. Similarly, the video shared does not show bikers heading to California. Instead, it depicts a charity event in Pennsylvania in November 2022, which the non-profit group that organized the ride confirmed in an email. A keyword search for the handle visible in the bottom right corner of the video found the corresponding TikTok account (archived here), where AFP retrieved the exact clip posted multiple times over the course of several years with different text overlays. The first misrepresented iteration of the clip appeared on the account on November 6, 2022 with the text, "Republicans waiting for the polls to open Nov 8th" in reference to the 2022 US midterm elections. The same clip was also misleadingly framed in other claims AFP debunked in 2024. Several visual elements in the video appeared to point to a gathering happening in the state of Pennsylvania, including blue and yellow license plates on the bikes, the logo of a Harley-Davidson store in Harrisburg embroidered on one of the bikers' jacket and a merchandise tent for a "biker dog" under the name of "Sidecar dog Riley." A keyword search on Google yielded results for a merchandise website (archived here), as well as social media accounts, under the same name in Northampton, Pennsylvania. A search on the dog's Facebook page found that the team behind "Sidecar dog Riley" (archived here) sold merchandise at Tucker's toy charity run and raffle on November 5, 2022 in Northampton organized by the non-profit Lehigh Valley Community Benefit (LVCB) a day before the clip first appeared on TikTok. LVCB's founder and president confirmed to AFP on June 17, 2025 in an email that the footage depicted "Tucker's Toy Run charity ride" in 2022. As highlighted below, identical tent displays as the one seen in the TikTok Image A screenshot of a TikTok post taken June 16, 2025 with elements highlighted by AFP Image A screenshot of a Facebook post taken June 17, 2025 with elements highlighted by AFP Motorcycle gang from 2022 A clip of another motorcade widely circulated on X on June 13, 2025, claiming to show "bikers on their way to California." Image A screenshot of an X post taken June 17, 2025 A Google reverse image search, again, revealed that the clip was taken out of its original context. AFP retrieved the clip, first posted on TikTok on July 28, 2022 (archived here). In the comments, several users mentioned Montebello in Los Angeles County as the location for the video. "Shout out to Arry's Burgers!!" a commenter wrote at the time. A Google Maps search for the restaurant confirmed that the footage showed the corner of Whittier Boulevard and Taylor Avenue in Montebello (archived here). AFP also identified the logo on the back of the bikers' vests as "Mongols California," in reference to a bikers club native to Montebello.
