Misurata political coalition calls for urgent election roadmap
BY Libyan Express Jun 16, 2025 - 03:39 Misurata political coalition calls for urgent election roadmap amid rising tensions A coalition of political, civic, and social actors in the city of Misurata has called for the formation of a new, unified national government tasked with preparing the country for urgently needed presidential and parliamentary elections. In a televised statement, the 'Forum of Political, Social, and National Movements' strongly criticised the performance of the Government of National Unity, accusing it of abandoning its core responsibilities — chiefly the organisation of national elections — while engaging in corruption, mismanagement of state resources, and endangering civilian lives. The forum firmly rejected any attempts to draw Misurata into armed conflict in the capital, Tripoli, warning against efforts to destabilise the city under the guise of revolutionary slogans or political manipulation. The statement urged the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and influential international actors to articulate a clear political roadmap leading to the establishment of a new executive authority, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2755 and under full Libyan ownership. The group also expressed its support for a recent statement issued by the Misurata Municipal Council, describing it as representative of the city's collective position. It condemned the misuse of the February 17 Revolution as a pretext to undermine civil peace or provoke military confrontation. Reaffirming its commitment to the revolution's original goals, the forum underscored the importance of democratic governance, peaceful transfer of power, and the rejection of military rule or any return to authoritarianism. Libya's Advisory Committee Submits Final Electoral Report to UN Mission
On Tuesday, the Advisory Committee, established as part of the UN-facilitated political process in Libya, officially concluded its work and submitted its final report to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The report outlines a series of well-considered options and recommendations to resolve key disputes surrounding Libya's current electoral framework. UNSMIL expressed deep appreciation for the committee's efforts, commending the professionalism and dedication of its members. According to the Mission, the committee demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing a political settlement that reflects the aspirations of the Libyan people. The work is viewed as an essential step in paving the way toward national elections and a unified institutional structure. The Mission confirmed that it will now review and assess the committee's proposals. This will be followed by consultations with a wide range of Libyan actors to explore possible consensus-based outcomes. The aim is to develop a realistic and inclusive roadmap that can lead to a national electoral process and the reunification of key state institutions. To uphold transparency, UNSMIL announced that it plans to publish the executive summary of the report in the near future. The Mission reaffirmed its support for a Libyan-led political path and stressed that all future steps will be guided by inclusivity, coordination, and international cooperation. The Advisory Committee was formed under UN Security Council Resolution 2755 (2024) and includes 20 Libyan experts in law, constitutional affairs, and elections. Significantly, 35% of the committee's members are women. The Mission emphasized its intention to continue engaging with these experts during the next stages of the political process. UNSMIL concluded by reaffirming its full commitment to accompanying the Libyan people as they work toward stability, peace, and unity, in collaboration with domestic actors and the international community.
