A coalition of political, civic, and social actors in the city of Misurata has called for the formation of a new, unified national government tasked with preparing the country for urgently needed presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a televised statement, the 'Forum of Political, Social, and National Movements' strongly criticised the performance of the Government of National Unity, accusing it of abandoning its core responsibilities — chiefly the organisation of national elections — while engaging in corruption, mismanagement of state resources, and endangering civilian lives.
The forum firmly rejected any attempts to draw Misurata into armed conflict in the capital, Tripoli, warning against efforts to destabilise the city under the guise of revolutionary slogans or political manipulation.
The statement urged the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and influential international actors to articulate a clear political roadmap leading to the establishment of a new executive authority, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2755 and under full Libyan ownership.
The group also expressed its support for a recent statement issued by the Misurata Municipal Council, describing it as representative of the city's collective position. It condemned the misuse of the February 17 Revolution as a pretext to undermine civil peace or provoke military confrontation.
Reaffirming its commitment to the revolution's original goals, the forum underscored the importance of democratic governance, peaceful transfer of power, and the rejection of military rule or any return to authoritarianism. Analyst doubts impact of Berlin talks on Libya

Hafizoglu: time-wasting won't solve Libya's crisis European powers are seeking to impose a form of guardianship over Libya's political process, according to Turkish political analyst Muhannad Hafizoglu , who has criticised what he described as superficial international engagement with the crisis. Speaking to regional media, Hafizoglu argued that European initiatives often fall short of delivering concrete outcomes. 'What we see are lofty statements and media-friendly proposals with little real-world effect,' he said. He expressed scepticism over the prospects of the upcoming Berlin conference, noting that past European efforts in Libya have frequently lacked substance and consistency. 'There's little to suggest this meeting will produce anything fundamentally new,' he added. Hafizoglu maintained that a more effective path forward lies in closer coordination between Libya, Egypt, and Turkey, alongside the involvement of key Libyan stakeholders. He described this as the only viable framework for progress, given the current international climate. Beyond that, he pointed to the complex involvement of major powers — including Russia and the United States — who remain active players in the Libyan file, but whose focus, he suggested, is currently diverted. 'With the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel dominating their attention, the bandwidth for resolving Libya's crisis is shrinking,' he observed. Looking ahead, Hafizoglu predicted a period of inertia. 'From now until the end of the year, we're likely to hear more calls for elections, new committees, and procedural steps — largely symbolic, aimed at managing public sentiment rather than delivering change.' 'The coming months,' he said, 'will likely be marked by stagnation, as key players revert to delay tactics and temporary fixes, rather than meaningful political movement.'

Iran refuses to halt uranium enrichment

BY Libyan Express Jun 21, 2025 - 03:49 Araqchi: 'We Can't Trust the Americans' Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi has once again reaffirmed Iran's unwavering right to uranium enrichment, stressing that this right is non-negotiable. An Iranian news agency reported that Araqchi stated in an interview with NBC News: 'Iran will never cease uranium enrichment.' He went on to say, 'We no longer know how to trust the Americans. Iran will never agree to a complete halt on uranium enrichment. Furthermore, Israel must end its attacks before any negotiations with the United States can take place.' When asked by the NBC presenter whether diplomacy could resolve the Iranian nuclear issue within two weeks, Araqchi responded: 'That depends entirely on the Americans — whether they demonstrate a genuine willingness to reach a negotiated settlement, or if they harbour other intentions and are planning to attack Iran.' He added, 'Perhaps they do have such a plan, and may only be using negotiations as a cover for it.' The senior Iranian nuclear negotiator concluded by emphasising, 'What they have done amounts to a betrayal of diplomacy, and we no longer know how to place our trust in them again.' Tunisia calls for stronger ties with Libya and Algeria

Tunisia eyes Libya reconstruction as investment opportunity Tunisian lawmakers have called for a more proactive governmental role in supporting Libya's reconstruction efforts and revitalising free trade zones, highlighting the need to enhance Tunisia's diplomatic initiatives in the region. During a recent consultative session with officials from Tunisia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, members of parliament stressed the importance of reinvigorating economic cooperation not only with Libya but also with neighbouring Algeria, according to an official parliamentary statement. The MPs underscored the strategic significance of activating free trade zones and advocated for a strengthened role of the Arab Parliament in facilitating coordinated regional action. Discussions also focused on Tunisia's commitment to supporting Libya's ongoing political reconciliation process, alongside efforts to boost Maghreb integration and bilateral ties with Algeria. Libya's extensive reconstruction needs—estimated by Tunisia's Export Promotion Center to reach as high as $570 billion—represent considerable investment opportunities for Tunisian companies, particularly in construction, infrastructure, and industrial equipment sectors. As Tunisia's foremost trading partner across the Arab world and Africa, Libya accounts for a substantial share of Tunisian exports, with industrial goods constituting approximately 40% of shipments. Meanwhile, Tunisia imports primarily energy resources, iron, and steel from Libya. Despite this robust trade relationship, the stalled development of the Bengardane Free Trade Zone on the Tunisia-Libya border has hampered economic exchanges. Nearly 12 years after its announcement, progress remains limited to preliminary land development and technical assessments, while other regional actors expand their commercial footprint amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. Tunisian lawmakers' renewed calls highlight the urgency of accelerating regional economic integration and capitalising on Libya's reconstruction as a catalyst for broader Maghreb cooperation.
