Woman Told To Put Down Horse, but She Refuses: 'Look at Him Now'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. A black horse is thriving after his owner refused to follow advice to have him put down. Mandy Helwege, 38, who shares updates on TikTok under the handle @todaywithgus, was devastated when her horse Gusadoo, or Gus, fell seriously ill earlier this year. Many people urged her to consider euthanasia, but she held on to hope. "I wish I could put words to how much he means to me and how connected I am to him, but there just aren't words. He is the greatest gift life has given me," Helwege told Newsweek. "I know there are some cases of sleep deprivation that end in euthanasia, and it is the right thing to do, so I did have that in the back of my mind as something I might have to face, and comments from strangers telling me that was the likely outcome were quite devastating to read. A few of them I knew meant well, while others were pretty coldhearted in their delivery, but they all brought me to my knees at the thought." Helwege said Gus is her first horse after more than 15 years away from the sport. The 13-year-old off-the-track thoroughbred began to collapse from sleep deprivation in February, prompting her to document his condition and share his progress over a three-month journey of rehabilitation. Over the course of several months, she tried numerous approaches to help Gus, ranging from alternative therapies such as an animal communicator, to extensive diagnostics and evaluations with veterinary teams. Helwege spent thousands of dollars on treatments, medications, and supplements, and said she often encountered professionals who downplayed his symptoms. Still, she refused to give up. "But look at him now," she wrote as the text overlay of his recovery. The breakthrough came when Helwege found the right team of professionals who could address Gus's physical, mental, and spiritual needs. She credits Dr. Rachel Heart Bellini of Heart Equine, Betsy Vonda of Balanced With Betsy, Martine Groeneveld of Green Animal Osteopathy, Dr. Heather Finn from Equine Performance Integrative Care, and a Reiki practitioner for playing a pivotal role in his recovery. Today, Gus is thriving. His energy has soared, his body has undergone visible changes, and Helwege said his spirit is "glowing from the inside out." While she isn't certain he is sleeping lying down yet, the signs suggest he is—and, most importantly, the collapsing episodes have stopped. "Gus has built up quite the fan club," Helwege said, describing how people from around the world have followed his recovery. "Companies who donated products without an expectation of anything in return in the hope they might help him be more comfortable. Thousands of people showed up for us and rallied behind him, gave so many suggestions, offered so much encouragement and I could never thank them enough." Helwege added: "It amazes me how they can all see the physical and emotional changes in him as well these past few weeks, and I love the way he brings joy to others." One user, Becca Ban, commented: "Thank god you've never given up on him. y'all are soulmates." Another wrote: "It's kinda scary how willing people are to take a perfectly healthy life out of convenience." User Bart shared: "Non-human animals also have the right to be sick, have disabilities, and to be cared for even without knowing what the outcome will be. I have had a similar story with my cat, we gave her time and she have beautiful years ahead of her." "I have never cried so much for something I didn't have any connection to. I'm so happy you didn't give up," another person added. Do you have funny and adorable videos or pictures of your pet you want to share? We want to see the best ones! Newport outbuilding can be used as wellness centre

The outbuilding of the property on Allt-Yr-Yn Road, Newport, will be transformed into a Reiki healing and yoga centre. The decision was made under application 25/0242, a Lawful Development Certificate for proposed use. The applicant can now officially operate the centre, which has been deemed suitable for the residential area. The outbuilding, located in the rear garden of the semi-detached property, has been in existence since at least 2006, as confirmed by aerial images. The centre will be open from Monday to Thursday, offering sessions between 9.30am and 6pm. Each session typically hosts one client and lasts for one hour and 15 minutes, with a maximum of two sessions per day. On rare occasions, up to four clients may be present at the same time. The clients are mostly local and are expected to walk to the sessions, with alternative parking areas identified for those who drive. Councillor Fouweather raised concerns about operating a business in a residential area, but no other objections were recorded. The planning consideration concluded that the proposed use of the outbuilding does not constitute a material change of use because of the limited and infrequent numbers of clients. The centre's operations are expected to have minimal noise and traffic impacts, consistent with the norms for a residential area. The proposed activities have been deemed consistent with the residential context. The decision was made under the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development)(Amendment)(Wales) Order 2013. The decision includes reference to specific documents: Building Plans V2.0, Application Form, and a confirming email received on May 8, 2025. The proposal is consistent with Newport's Well-Being Plan 2018–23 objectives.

British couple on Air India flight named

A British couple believed to have been aboard the crashed Air India flight posted about their 'magical experience' in the country. Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre and yoga studio, spoke of their love of India and the 'mind-blowing' experiences they had had just hours before the flight took off. Just after leaving the airport, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was engulfed in a huge fireball after plummeting into a building in the suburb of Ahmedabad, the largest city in Gujarat state. The flight, with 242 people, including 53 British nationals, on board was en route to Gatwick airport. Eleven children were among the passengers. On Tuesday, the Greenlaw-Meeks had posted on their social media accounts from their boutique hotel in the city, The House of MG, about how they planned to create a vlog documenting their time in the city and were excited to tell people about the details. Jamie said: 'We really have been on quite a journey, and then just spending the last night here in this amazing hotel, and we have just had the most delicious Tali food. It was a perfect way to round up the trip. Excited to share it all with you'. Other videos show Fiongal discussing how they were 'feeling very, very, very happy' and showing off the 'treasures' that they had bought before a final video showed them in the airport as the plane was boarding. Credit: @wellnessfoundry / Instagram The couple run The Wellness Foundry in south London and Ramsgate, Kent, which offers psychic readings, tarot, Reiki and yoga. It has collaborated with brands including Dior, Google, and Netflix, according to its website, and was due to offer readings at Ramsgate's Pride march on Saturday. In January, Fiongal appeared on ITV's This Morning to talk about people's auras and what they mean. The couple's Wellness Foundry described it on Instagram as their 'biggest gig so far', adding that it was 'very nerve-wracking' but that Fiongal was 'honoured to chat about one of his favourite topics to such a big audience'. The couple documented their professional and personal lives on social media, advertising 'psychic development' and spiritual retreats in the UK and Spain. They have been together since 2019, getting married in various ceremonies, including one in Las Vegas, in 2022. Jamie posted a series of pictures of their wedding day at Mill Farm in Gamlingay, Cambs, on Facebook, adding that they had made 'so many wonderful memories and fun to last a lifetime'. He added: 'Thank you to my wonderful husband for keeping me calm in times of stress (sunshine after the rain)... My heart is so full of love and gratitude…' Jamie has previously spoken about how he developed a passion for wellness and health when his late father was diagnosed with cancer. Meet the Owner of Ritual + Shelter, a Homewood Shop That's All About Healing

Share with your friends! Pinterest LinkedIn Email Flipboard Reddit After finding relief from pain and trauma in the metaphysical, Jennifer Dorfman has been helping others through holistic and mystical modalities ever since. In 2020, she opened Ritual + Shelter as a haven for all things magickal in Birmingham. In addition to running her shop, Jennifer is a certified Death Doula, Reiki Master Teacher, Brainspotting Practitioner, and EFT Tapping Coach. For her, spirituality is about expansion, connection, and healing. Get to know this week's FACE of Birmingham! Pin Where are you from originally, and what brought you to Birmingham? I grew up in Winchester, VA, and earned my BA in English from Campbell University. I spent a decade living in the Raleigh, NC area and mostly worked in retail management, although I never really thought of it as a 'real' job at the time. In 2010, I followed my heart and intuition and made the move to Birmingham. It was here that I met and married my incredible husband and became a stepmom to two amazing stepdaughters. Despite building a beautiful family, I found myself struggling to 'find my tribe.' I didn't feel like I fit in anywhere, and for a long time, I couldn't figure out why. Pin How did you find your way to holistic healing and the metaphysical? It's hard to put into words because it was such a complex, transformative journey. Like most people around me, I grew up in the church. But the more I read my Bible and attended services, the more I noticed a disconnect between the teachings of kindness and how the church treated diversity. I knew there had to be a better way — one that didn't hurt others or myself. One night, I was meditating — sort of praying, too, though by then I was somewhere between agnostic and atheist. I asked, 'Who or what is out there? I need help!' And I got the most profound answer: a voice, just outside my right ear, said, 'It's been you all this time.' Around that same time, I had started clearing overgrown vines from our land and could hear the trees thanking me. It made me feel dizzy with wonder. Then I tried Reiki for back pain, not even knowing what it was. That first session blew my mind. Pin Can you say more about the 'magickal' side of your work? Magic is such an expansive word — it can mean so many things. But unfortunately, pop culture has warped our perception of it. When most people hear 'magic,' they think of superpowers, hexes, or flying broomsticks. But actual magic? I think it's just a phenomenon that science hasn't explained yet. How has Birmingham responded to your shop and work? When I opened Ritual + Shelter in 2020, I had already owned my retail shop, Domicile, for five years. I'd slowly been adding tarot and oracle decks, crystals, and oddities to my inventory. When the pandemic hit, and we had to shut down temporarily, it was my metaphysical customers who kept me afloat. I was floored by their support! When the shop next to mine closed, I saw a perfect opportunity to expand — and Ritual + Shelter was born. Aside from a few isolated situations, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Birmingham has a huge spiritual community. I love saying we really are 'The Magic City'—not just in name, but in spirit. Every age, ethnicity, and gender walks through our doors, and all are welcome. Pin What is one thing you wish everyone knew about witchcraft? A huge misconception is that witches worship Satan. That's just not true. Yes, some people worship Satan, just like some people worship just about anything. But historically, the people accused of witchcraft were often healers, herbalists, midwives, spiritual leaders, and overwhelmingly, women. To me, a witch is someone who has reclaimed their own power. Someone who makes up their own mind. Someone who understands light and dark, respects the Earth, and understands the nature of energy. For newbies interested in exploring the mystical, metaphysical, and magickal, how do you recommend getting started? I try to represent a wide range of paths in my shop, so I recommend stopping by and seeing what resonates. Everyone's path looks different. For me, it led into healing. I've trained in sound bowls, guided meditation, crystal healing, trauma-informed coaching, and end-of-life care. I also taught myself tarot and a bit of astrology. Others may be drawn to herbalism, yoga, ritual, or self-transformation through ceremony. I always say that finding witchcraft and spirituality felt like opening a door to the universe. Pin What do you like to do when you're not working? I'm usually hanging with my husband, meditating, or grounding. Because Ritual + Shelter is a sanctuary, many clients come in carrying really heavy trauma — things they feel even their therapist might not understand. I love helping people heal, but I have to be diligent about letting go of that energy at the end of the day. Meditation and grounding are essential for me. I also love reading and interior design. The store never looks the same twice — we're always reimagining the space. Who or what is inspiring you right now? My stepdaughters are such an inspiration. They've both finished undergrad and are heading into grad school. They're kind, funny, and incredibly driven. They're going to do amazing things for this world, and I'm so grateful to be part of their lives. I'm also rewatching Love on the Spectrum and listening to The Telepathy Tapes podcast, which explores autism and telepathy. That's magic to me — just explained through neuroscience. I was just recently diagnosed with autism myself, at 45, and that realization has helped me understand so much more about my own gifts. It's also something I see reflected in many of my clients. What is your best piece of advice? Be authentically yourself. Be weird. Be strange. Love what you love. Aside from faith, family, and friends, name three things you can't live without. A luxurious bath, my giant fluorite crystal from Tucson, and P.F. Candle Co.'s Piñon scent. Friends star makes surprising career move as she steps away from acting

The cast of Friends became some of the most recognisable faces in showbiz when they landed on screens in 1994 - but one actor has now stepped away from the industry all together The Friends cast haven't been able to escape from their character's names since the show first aired in 1994. However, one star has moved far away from the sitcom as she reveals her surprising career change. A huge storyline in the NBC sitcom was Ross Geller's (David Schwimmer) unfortunate love life, which all started off with his first wife Carol (Jane Sibbett). The couple shared son Ben, although Carol left Ross for Susan Bunch, played by Jessica Hecht. ‌ The onscreen relationship between the two was groundbreaking, making history with the first lesbian wedding on network television in the episode "The One with the Lesbian Wedding", which aired on NBC on January 18, 1996. ‌ Jane, who appeared in 15 episodes of the NBC sitcom which aired from 1994-2001 now has a very different career - as an energy healer. The 62-year-old moved from California to Hawaii over a decade ago to pursue a career as an energy healer. Speaking about the transitioning from acting to healing and spirituality with PEOPLE, Jane said: 'When I work with the dancing hands, it's not me. It's source energy coming through me, and so I just feel nothing but bliss and joy and love when I am in this state." Before her move to Hawaii, Jane and her hosted goddess circles for women, with groups ranging from 15 to 100 people who would partake in the spiritual activity. The couple later launched a production company, although later split while living in Hawaii. I was on my knees because I was really broken hearted by everything, and part of that was my stuff that I had to deal with,' she told the publication. ‌ Jane then embraced her new career as an energy healer. 'I wouldn't call it Reiki,' she said. '[My hands] just started dancing because I was never trained in Reiki, so I wouldn't even know what that is. I believe in it, I trust it [but] it's just not what I do. This wasn't trained. This just came in fully fleshed, immediately.' In 2020, Jane opened up about the backlash she received from viewers for playing lesbian character Carol on the hit sitcom. Speaking with Now To Love, she said: "It became apparent soon after [the show premiered] there was suddenly a responsibility about being able to stand up against all of the people that were saying this was wrong, including my own father who had a really hard time with that." It came after the actress revealed she was initially poached for Jennifer Aniston 's role of Rachel Green before the show began filming. However, she was unable to take on the role as she was pregnant at the time.
