Ballerina Exclusive: Norman Reedus Reveals Best Part of John Wick Universe, Recalls Watching Keanu Reeves in Action for 1st Time

Norman Reedus, popularly known for playing Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead, turns into a deadly assassin in the John Wick universe in Ballerina alongside Ana de Armas. Reedus, who is a long-time fan of the Keanu Reeves-led film series, reflects on joining the cult-favorite action thriller franchise and his character, Pine, in an exclusive chat with Pinkvilla. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the much-awaited spin-off by Len Wiseman, revolves around Eve Macarro (de Armas), a deadly assassin on a quest for vengeance after her family is brutally murdered. Reedus stars as a conflicted and complex killer who seamlessly integrates into the John Wick universe. Reedus has always respected the franchise's cinematic style, from its sleek lighting and visual aesthetic to its action choreography and realistic characters. He has been a loyal follower of the series since its inception and was highly impressed by its commitment to detail and kinetic energy. "I like everything about those films, including the characters, lighting, and action. I remember the first time I saw Keanu, as Wick, flick a cartridge out of a pistol. I was like, 'Oh my god, rewind, rewind," Reedus tells Pinkvilla. "I'm honored to join the John Wick world," Reedus continues, "and I can confidently say there's nothing like it or its passionate fanbase." To prepare for the part, Reedus went back and watched the first four John Wick movies. He highlights the franchise's commitment to its internal code of honor. He says, "One of the things I really like about this universe is that nobody lies. The idea of the honest assassin is just one of the many rules that makes these movies unique." The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon star's interest in the action thriller series carried through to his performance, which integrates easily with the gritty texture of the movie. He adds, "Everything about them is cool and badass. You want to watch them repeatedly." Meanwhile, Wiseman, who has collaborated with Reedus before, had in mind for him to play this role from the beginning. Reedus's humble nature and innate charisma are the perfect qualities for the franchise's world, the director says. "Norman has a specific quality that just fits in perfectly with the John Wick world. Norman doesn't think he's cool — and that's what makes him cool," Wiseman notes.

Norman Reedus Says 'Yeah, For Sure' He'd Play Sam Bridges in the Death Stranding Movie

Norman Reedus is completely open to playing Sam Porter Bridges in the Death Stranding movie, if the opportunity arises. While promoting the film From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, IGN asked Reedus the question, to which the actor replied 'If it was an option, yeah, for sure.' But Reedus was quick to make clear that there were no plans for it whatsoever at the moment. 'I don't know what's happening with it, right?' Reedus says, 'It's so pre-pre [pre-production], but yeah.' The Death Stranding movie was announced by Hideo Kojima and A245 in December 2023, but no details were announced at the time. To this day we still don't know if the film will directly adapt the game, or rather be a separate story that ties into the game world. At the time, Hideo Kojima said ' A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years.' The latest development was in April 2024, when the film finally found its director with Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One). No other creatives or actors attached to the film are known for the moment. The world of Death Stranding is set to expand this year, of course, with the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. In the same IGN interview, Reedus talks about his experience working on the sequel. 'As far as working with him [Kojima] and understanding where his head's at, I don't think anyone can understand that, he's just that guy, and he's got great ideas,' Reedus says, 'But story-wise, I did know what was happening more. There's more action in it, there's more of a definite goal to get to. It's always a trip working on those things.' Death Stranding 2: On the Beach June 26 for PS5. The Death Stranding movie is currently in production at A24.

Norman Reedus would "for sure" star in A24's Death Stranding movie: "I don't know what's happening with it"

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Norman Reedus says he would absolutely play Sam in the upcoming Death Stranding movie if it "was an option." "If it was an option, yeah, for sure," Reedus told IGN. "I don't know what's happening with it, right? It's so [production] right now. But yeah, yeah, of course!" You can watch the clip below. Death Stranding, created by none other than Hideo Kojima, was released in 2019 and featured voice and motion capture from the likes of Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley. Taking place in an apocalyptic America, the player controls Sam Porter Bridges (Reedus), a courier who must deliver supplies to remote colonies known as Knot Cities - which make up what is known as the United Cities of America - and reconnect them via a wireless communications network. Death Stranding 2 is set to release in June, with Reedus reprising his role as Sam. Michael Sarnoski, who directed the critically acclaimed and commercially successful A Quiet Place: Day One, is set to write and direct - with some help from Kojima, of course (who won't let Sarnoski play Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 for some reason). Kojima also clarified last year that this is just one of many Death Stranding projects in the works (one being a movie that he wrote himself, but doesn't "have time" to direct). He also reportedly said that the upcoming film will be both "strange" and "unbelievable." Death Stranding does not yet have a release date.
