Ab-Soul Speaks On Joey Bada$$ And West Coast Rap Feud: 'It's A Sport'
Ab-Soul has something to say. After a Red Bull Spiral freestyle cypher, which also featured Big Sean, amped up the rap beef between Joey Bada$$ and seemingly the entire West Coast, the Soul Burger performer explained that he knew what to expect from the moment. 'At the end of the day, I was going to be super cool but f**k it, man. I choreographed the whole sh*t,' explained the 38-year-old to VIBE on Sunday (May 18) ahead of the Red Bull BC One Cypher breaking competition in Denver. 'Because of the whole thing with Joey and a couple of the homies. I knew he was going to have something to say about that.' 'Me and Joey are really close, obviously. And so, we had to let the world know that we are just keeping it on wax. Hip-Hop is competitive, it's a sport. It's real healthy, but it's not…it doesn't have to be disrespectful or dangerous or anything like that…We can get busy and still shake hands.' He continued to explain, 'I also wanted to synchronize it to where if you listen, we're all kind of getting at each other. Everybody is competing against each other, but it's a sibling rivalry. It's a friendly competition… That's the point we were trying to make… And that's Hip-Hop, that's intelligent movement. It's competitive, it's a sport.' Since speaking with Ab-Soul, Joey Bada$$ has traded bars with Daylyt, AZ Chike, and Ray Vaughn with some assistance from Loaded Lux. In full, Reason, Kai Ca$h, Really Jaewon, and CJ Fly have all stepped up to the mic. 'I think when it's really love, it's really like that. If it's not love, then it's not like that,' explained Ab-Soul, of maintaining brotherhood through the noise of the industry. 'I don't walk around trying to make friends. I don't walk around trying to find love. You know what I'm saying? That got to happen organically, and it's a privilege when it does. You've got to cherish it…I don't know if you got brothers or sisters. Like you done fought with your brothers or sisters too, right? But y'all still love each other too, right? I done fist fought with a lot of my best friends, and I will fight for all them too. It's that kind of thing.' Ab-Soul Adds To Joey Bada$$ Vs. West Coast Feud On Untitled Track
Ab-Soul has responded to Joey Bada$$'s ambitious feud with multiple West Coast rappers on a song of his own. On the untitled track produced by Low the Great & Python P, the Carson-bred lyricist has some words for the Brooklyn rapper, DJ Akademiks, and teases a Black Hippy reunion. Although the song plays more like a warning shot than a full-on diss record, Ab-Soul's intent is not lost in the bar-heavy performance. He takes on Joey Bada$$ with respect for his peer and their longstanding relationship, but stands firm in knowing the power in his own skills and solidarity with the West Coast. In his upload, he repurposed an image posted on January 2018 by his close friend Armon 'Doe Burger' Stringer, who passed away in 2021. 'Come to find out STEEZ was the leader of the whole s**t/Wish we could've bust it down more 'fore he transitioned,' he rhymed, paying homage to the Pro Era crew and the late Capitol STEEZ. 'Fast forward, 4-7 on me permanently/Meanin', if you f**king with them, then you f**king with TDE/This a competitive game, ni**as better be in shape/ Catch you a friendly fade, then keep it that way.' In the two-part track, Ab-Soul also makes sure listeners 'Don't forget the dash' and sends shots outside of the rappers entangled in the drawn-out feud. 'Carson across my belly, I'll prove I won already/ Bar none, don't cross the ninety-one without a pass/You gon' need credentials and premium gas/And I'ma slap Akademiks when I see him.' The song comes after Joey Bada$$ hopped in the booth, defending himself amid disses from Ray Vaughn, Daylyt, and AZ Chike in his attempt to bait Kendrick Lamar to respond. A highlight of the entire ordeal came when the 1999 rapper joined Ab-Soul and Big Sean in a Red Bull Spiral freestyle cypher where everything was laid on the table. 'At the end of the day, I was going to be super cool but f**k it, man. I choreographed the whole sh*t,' explained the 38-year-old to VIBE. 'Because of the whole thing with Joey and a couple of the homies. I knew he was going to have something to say about that.' He continued to detail, 'Me and Joey are really close, obviously. And so, we had to let the world know that we are just keeping it on wax. Hip-Hop is competitive, it's a sport. It's real healthy, but it's not…it doesn't have to be disrespectful or dangerous or anything like that…We can get busy and still shake hands.' Watch: Joey Bada$$ Stops By ‘Sound Check With Jeremy Hecht' To Choose Between New York Legends Jay-Z & Nas
Source: Courtesy / UPROXX Studios The fire guests just keep on coming! This week, Brooklyn rapper and actor Joey Bada$$ joins host Jeremy Hecht for UPROXX's Sound Check, a new weekly interview series revealing your favorite artist's musical taste. Each high-stakes, 12-round episode features a carefully curated playlist of impossible choices, unearthing some never-before-heard stories and creative influences. This episode was recorded about an hour before Joey went into the booth and recorded his game-shaking verse during the Red Bull Spiral cypher with Ab-Soul and Big Sean at the Red Bull studios. Everyone in the hip hop community is aware of the current East coast vs. West coast battle that Joey just so happens to be in the middle of. With that being the case, it only make sense that he was forced to choose between songs from two of his favorite artists of all time – 'Changes' by Tupac ft. Talent and 'Sky's The Limit' by The Notorious B.I.G. ft. 112. Joey chose the Pac classic and said. 'I think the Tupac 'Changes' one is definitely like, that's probably number one…that's a generational classic…That joint it just do something to you…I probably listen to 'Sky's The Limit' more though, but I gotta give it to 'Changes'.' As a New York native, being a fan of both Jay-Z and Nas is almost embedded in you. Later in the episode, Joey had to pick which track he preferred from two of his favorite albums of all time – 'Dead Presidents II' by Jay-Z and 'World Is Yours' by Nas. The 30 year-old decided on the former: 'Out of the two songs that you play for me, I got to go 'Dead Presidents'…as much as I love Ilmatic, 'World is Yours' is not my favorite joint on there, you know what I'm saying. Like if you played 'It Ain't Hard to Tell' then it would have been a different conversation you know what I mean but…it's funny that 'Dead President' is not my favorite song on Reasonable Doubt either…'Friend or Foe' is probably my favorite.' In the final round, Hecht flips the script and turns the tables on himself by attempting to guess the track Joey says represents his entire life. Given two options—'Bag Lady' by Erykah Badu and 'Something About Us' by Daft Punk—Hecht correctly guessed 'Something About Us'. When asked about his song selection, Joey answers, 'That's my favorite song of all time…I can't even remember when I found that song um, that's on their Discovery album and uh I don't know bro it's just like it's so funky but it got like a hip-hop kind of R&B element to it, and then it's like when the words come it's like the perfect words bro…like me and my daughter listen to that song, it's one of her favorite songs now too.' Check out the entertaining full episode featuring Joey Bada$$ below! Stay tuned as many more guests are scheduled to visit the show in the coming weeks.
