2025 Emmy predictions: Best TV movie

The panel's lack of enthusiasm for this category expresses itself in a drastic falloff after the first three contenders, as different from each other as TV movies can be. 'Rebel Ridge,' the intense actioner with a should-be star-making performance by Aaron Pierre, is at No. 1. Tied for second are the fourth 'Bridget Jones' movie, rom-com 'Mad About the Boy,' and 'Mountainhead,' which Lorraine Ali calls a 'billionaire satire.' 'We all gripe about this category every year,' acknowledges Tracy Brown, 'but I think the toughest thing … is the range of projects it encompasses, from the more blockbuster-skewing 'Rebel Ridge' to the more firmly indie 'Am I OK?'. And we all need to be OK with that.' Kristen Baldwin sums up the frustration on the part of some panelists: 'Suggestion: Change the name of this category to Nontheatrical Movies. The concept of a 'TV Movie,' as we once knew it, is dead.' Still, Matt Roush sees something to celebrate at the summit, saying 'Mountainhead' 'feels like a front-runner on pedigree alone,' citing its writing and direction by 'Succession's' Jesse Armstrong, and its starry cast. 'This darkest of farces is also frighteningly timely.' 1. 'Rebel Ridge'2. (tie) 'Mountainhead'2. (tie) 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy'4. 'Out of My Mind'5. 'The Gorge'6. 'G20'7. 'Am I OK?'

Green Lantern Aaron Pierre Allegedly Being Eyed for James Bond

The search for the next James Bond continues, and while he already has a new face in the upcoming game, a rumor is going around about the next big screen Bond—and he's someone expected to blow up in the DC space very soon. According to insider Daniel RPK (via @TheOscarRace) Aaron Pierre ( Lanterns, Rebel Ridge ) is currently being considered for the role of 007. Of course, nothing official has been said about the matter, but Pierre has already proven that he can do some intense action sequences; in fact, it was speculated that it was his role in Rebel Ridge that got him the Green Lantern job. The way the internet works these days, it's very possible that the casting of Pierre could be met with intense backlash from the anti-woke crowd, but based on his work, I think he would make for a fantastic Bond. Admittedly, I prefer my 007 to be on the more lighthearted side, and it's still not clear if Pierre will be able to deliver that, seeing that a lot of his roles have been pretty serious. Then again, he was able to pull off a ridiculous character named 'Mid-Sized Sedan' in an M. Night Shyamalan movie, so maybe James Bond won't be so much of a stretch. As a character that's constantly being poked fun at today for not surviving cancel culture, MGM has a huge hurdle to get through if they want to keep 007 relevant for newer audiences. Maybe Pierre is the key, but we'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, Pierre is expected to star in Lanterns which hits HBO Max sometime in 2026.

Rebel Bridge star Aaron Pierre is reportedly being eyed as the next James Bond — but fans are still asking, what about Idris Elba?

The search for the next James Bond may have come to an end. New rumours suggest Netflix's Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre is now being considered for the iconic role. While nothing's official yet, fans are already talking, and many are wondering, why not Idris Elba? The idea of Elba playing 007 has been floating around for over a decade. The actor has got the charisma, the presence, the voice – basically everything you'd want in a Bond. But despite fans' endless wishlists, the actor has repeatedly said he's not interested. That hasn't stopped the internet from bringing him up every single time new Bond rumours pop up, though. So why is Aaron Pierre being considered? Aaron Pierre could be our next James Bond, as per scooper Daniel Richtman. While Pierre has yet to comment on the development, the internet has already begun questioning his eligibility. But if you've seen him in Rebel Ridge on Netflix, you probably get it. He has serious screen presence, and more importantly, he handles action like a pro. That's the Bond starter pack right there. Plus, at 31, Pierre fits the franchise's rumoured push for a younger, long-term lead, and he's British, which still matters for the role. There's also a sense that Amazon MGM, which now holds the rights, is ready to shake things up a bit. A fresh face like Pierre, who's been on the rise but hasn't become a household name yet, might be the perfect way to relaunch Bond for a new era. But Idris Elba is still the name on everyone's wishlist Why not him? 😭 Fans have a hard time letting go of Elba, and honestly, who can blame them? The actor, 52, has been seen as the ideal Bond for so long that he feels like the people's 007. Even though in a 2023 interview he said he's not interested in playing the part anymore and producers are reportedly looking for someone younger, the conversation keeps coming back to him. Who else has been in the Bond rumour mill? The list of potential Bonds over the last few years has basically become a who's who of British acting talent. Here are a few names that have been floating around: Aaron Taylor-Johnson: The actor is rumoured to have already screen-tested for the role and, at one point, was said to have been offered it. He's still a strong contender. Rege-Jean Page: Ever since Bridgerton, fans (and some producers) can't stop picturing him in a tux with a martini. Naomie Harris even said he has 'everything it takes'. Cillian Murphy: After Oppenheimer, there was a lot of chatter about Murphy stepping into the role, but he has denied the possibility. Henry Cavill, Theo James, Tom Hardy, Paul Mescal, and James Norton – they've all been linked to the role at one point or another. So, do we finally have the next Bond? The truth is, we're probably still a while away from any official announcement. But what's clear is that the Bond team are keeping their options open. Whether it's a seasoned star like Taylor-Johnson, a fan favourite like Page, or a rising force like Aaron Pierre, the next Bond is going to signal a new chapter for the franchise. And if it's not Idris Elba (again), fans will just have to keep dreaming or maybe start eyeing him for a Bond villain role instead?

Aaron Pierre gains James Bond buzz after breakout performance in Netflix's Rebel Ridge

Speculation around the next James Bond continues to grow, and British actor Aaron Pierre has emerged as a compelling candidate. Industry insider Daniel Richtman recently reported that Pierre is among those being considered for the iconic role. Fans and critics alike point to his performance in Netflix's 2024 action thriller Rebel Ridge as a strong argument in his favor. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge follows Terry Richmond, a former marine who travels to Shelby Springs to help his cousin. Once there, he becomes entangled in a violent conflict with corrupt local police. Pierre's portrayal of Richmond earned acclaim for its balance of intensity, physicality, and charisma—traits long associated with the Bond character. In a review by Dexerto, Pierre's performance was described as 'a star-is-born moment'—'hulking, intimidating, but coolly charismatic.' The Guardian praised it as 'a real movie star arrival,' while Variety highlighted his 'restraint and precision,' calling his character both 'sympathetic' and powerful. Even The Observer, despite reservations about the film, noted that Pierre deserves his own action franchise. Pierre is also set to star as John Stewart in the upcoming DC series Lanterns, marking his entry into the superhero genre. But fans are now wondering whether his next big role could be as James Bond. With charm, intelligence, and effortless screen presence, Rebel Ridge proves that Pierre has all the right ingredients to take on the legendary 007 role.
