IGP turns RM5,000 court award from blogger Papagomo into welfare boost for cops

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has donated RM5,000 to the Tabung Amanah Warisan Polis (TAWP), using funds awarded by the court in his committal proceedings against blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo.
In a statement, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) said a mock cheque for the amount was presented to Bukit Aman management director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid, who is also a permanent member of TAWP, in a brief ceremony at the IGP's office here today.
This is Razarudin's second contribution to TAWP, following a RM10,000 donation made on February 24, bringing his total personal contribution to RM15,000.
'This contribution reflects my support for TAWP's welfare initiatives to assist police officers, personnel and their children in need.
'Funds like this are essential in easing the financial burden of those in need, especially within the police community,' Razarudin said in the statement.
On April 30, Papagomo issued an unconditional apology to Razarudin over defamatory statements made earlier this year.
Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong, in delivering the ruling, said the apology read out in court must also be published on YouTube, TikTok, X, and Telegram for at least seven days.
The court also ordered Papagomo to pay RM5,000 in costs.
In February, the court granted Razarudin permission to initiate committal proceedings against Papagomo for allegedly breaching a court injunction dated January 10.
The injunction prohibited Papagomo or his representatives from publishing or disseminating any defamatory statements against Razarudin on social media, whether in his official capacity as IGP or his personal capacity.
This included statements made in writing, orally, through videos, or via online platforms and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
The court was originally scheduled to hear contempt of court proceedings initiated by Razarudin against the blogger, but both parties were advised to seek a resolution, which led to Wan Muhammad Azri's apology and subsequent purging of the contempt.
On December 26 last year, Razarudin filed a RM3 million lawsuit against Papagomo for alleged defamation, which also involved the name of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. — Bernama

Court grants DNAA to Najib in RM27m SRC money laundering case as trial stalled since 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak was today granted discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) from his final criminal case involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds amounting to RM27 million after trial has stalled since 2019. The decision was delivered by High Court Judge K. Muniandy during today's hearing on whether to set new trial dates or grant a DNAA as previously applied by the defence. Muniandy said the rule of law was applicable to prevent such a detrimental situation whereby an accused person is saddled which criminal charges with no outcome for an indefinite and indeterminate period. 'The prolonged wait for trial has become a long haul for the accused person, denying him of a timely resolution,' he said. 'This court is also mindful of the prevailing fact that the preferred charges against the accused dates back to the offence being committed in the year 2014, now it is 2025, and the case has not taken off for trial. 'By the virtue of these factors, the most appropriate order is for this court to discharge accused person without acquitting him so they he's not saddle with the charges preferred against him,' he added. With today's DNAA, Najib has only the 1MDB trial still pending. He is currently serving a jail term for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International funds case. He was also previously acquitted over the removal of key information from the auditor-general's 2016 report on 1MDB; and granted a DNAA in his RM6.6 billion International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) criminal breach of trust case Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had previously suggested to court to grant his client a DNAA in the interest of justice as trial has been indefinitely postponed since 2019. A DNAA means an accused person can face trial for the same charges in the future if the prosecution decides to reinstate them. MORE TO COME

Two Singaporeans busted in Thailand for running cross-border vice ring

SINGAPORE, June 20 — Two Singaporean men believed to be key figures in a transnational vice syndicate have been arrested in Thailand following a joint operation between the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Royal Thai Police (RTP). According to Channel News Asia, a Thai national was also detained in the cross-border crackdown on June 17. Investigations into the criminal group began in 2023, after more than 70 vice workers arrested in Singapore were linked to the same network. 'Investigations against the vice workers established useful information against the vice syndicate,' SPF said in a statement. The arrests followed close cooperation between the SPF's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Technology Crime Suppression Division of Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). Shared intelligence allowed authorities to identify the three suspects. The 38-year-old Singaporean allegedly used a 'complex network of bank accounts' to transfer prostitution proceeds from Singapore to Thailand. The second Singaporean, aged 36, is believed to have supported the syndicate's cross-border operations. The men were arrested under the Thai Criminal Code. Assets worth more than 20 million baht (RM2.4 million), including cash, two condos, and various digital devices, were seized by Thai officers. In Singapore, more than S$1.26 million in suspected criminal proceeds was frozen from the older suspect's bank accounts. Investigations are ongoing.
