Firm fined RO2,200 for failing to provide services: CPA

Muscat – The Primary Court in the wilayat of Barka has ruled against a commercial establishment, convicting two of its representatives for violating the Consumer Protection Law. The court imposed a fine of RO2,200 and ordered a refund of RO470 to a consumer. The case followed a complaint by a customer who had purchased a refrigerator for RO470 and later discovered it was defective, failing to cool properly. Despite repeated attempts to contact the establishment for inspection or replacement, the consumer received no response. The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) intervened and referred the matter to the Public Prosecution, which forwarded it to the court. After reviewing the case, the court found the two representatives guilty of failing to provide the service properly and of issuing an invoice not written in Arabic, both violations of the Consumer Protection Law issued under Royal Decree No 66/2014. Each representative was fined RO600 for the first offence and RO500 for the second. The court ruled that the fines would be suspended if the consumer was refunded within one month. The defendants were also ordered to pay legal expenses. In civil terms, the contract between the parties was rescinded, and the court ordered the defendants to return the full purchase amount of RO470. The CPA reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to protecting consumer rights and urged all businesses to comply with relevant laws and regulations.

Pilgrims without valid haj permits to face penalties, warns Oman

By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – The Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs (MERA) has urged citizens and residents planning to perform haj this year to secure a valid permit, warning of strict penalties for violations in line with regulations set by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In a statement, MERA emphasised the importance of complying with licensing rules issued by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Haj and Umrah. 'A permit is essential for performing the pilgrimage,' the ministry stated, warning that unauthorised travel or promotion of unlicensed haj services could lead to significant fines. According to the Oman Haj Mission, individuals travelling without a valid permit may face fines ranging from RO1,000 to RO2,000. Those found advertising or organising unauthorised haj transport could be fined between RO500 and RO1,000. Authorities also called on the public to rely on official communication channels for accurate information and cautioned against misinformation from unofficial sources. Earlier this year, Oman signed a bilateral agreement with Saudi Arabia concerning arrangements for the 1446 AH haj season. The agreement aims to streamline the pilgrimage process for Omani pilgrims.

Oman: CPA cracks down on sale of used tyres

Muscat: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) in North Sharqiyah has seized 1,104 used vehicle tyres from commercial establishments involved in their storage, repair, and resale. The action was taken in line with the Consumer Protection Law, which prohibits the sale of used tyres due to the risks they pose to consumers. The seized tyres were impounded, and legal measures have been initiated against the violators. The CPA stated that the ban on used tyres is aimed at ensuring public safety. As part of the recent amendments to the Consumer Protection Law, penalties for violating tyre sale regulations have been increased. The fine, previously set at RO500, has been doubled to RO1,000. For repeat offenders, the penalty will be doubled again, with an additional fine of RO50 per day for continued violations, up to a maximum of RO2,000. The amended regulations, which took effect on August 19, 2024, reinforce an existing ruling (No 257/2015) that bans the sale of used tyres in Oman. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
