Judge blocks Trump plan to tie states' transportation funds to immigration enforcement
A federal judge on Thursday blocked Donald Trump's administration from forcing 20 Democratic-led states to cooperate with immigration enforcement in order to receive billions of dollars in transportation grant funding. Chief US District Judge John McConnell in Providence, Rhode Island, granted the states' request for an injunction barring the Department of Transportation's policy, saying the states were likely to succeed on the merits of some or all of their claims. The Trump administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by a group of Democratic state attorneys general who argued the administration was seeking to unlawfully hold federal funds hostage to coerce them into adhering to Trump's hardline immigration agenda. The states argued the US transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, lacked the authority to impose immigration-enforcement conditions on funding that Congress appropriated to help states sustain roads, highways, bridges and other transportation projects. Since returning to office on 20 January, Trump has signed several executive orders that have called for cutting off federal funding to so-called sanctuary jurisdictions that do not cooperate with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) as his administration has moved to conduct mass deportations. Sanctuary jurisdictions generally have laws and policies that limit or prevent local law enforcement from assisting federal officers with civil immigration arrests. The justice department has filed a series of lawsuits against such jurisdictions, including Illinois, New York and Colorado, challenging laws in those Democratic-led states that it says hinder federal immigration enforcement. The lawsuit before McConnell, who was appointed by Barack Obama, was filed after Duffy on 24 April notified states they could lose transportation funding if they do not cooperate with the enforcement of federal law, including with Ice in its efforts to enforce immigration law. The states argue that policy is improper and amounts to an unconstitutionally ambiguous condition on the states' ability to receive funding authorized by Congress as it leaves unclear what exactly would constitute adequate cooperation. The administration has argued the policy was within Duffy's discretion and that conditions should be upheld as there is nothing improper about requiring states to comply with federal law. The 20 states are separately pursuing a similar case also in Rhode Island challenging new immigration enforcement conditions that the homeland security department imposed on grant programs.

Wisconsin basketball finalizes another notable nonconference opponent
Wisconsin basketball finalizes another notable nonconference opponent Wisconsin basketball will begin the Rady Children's Invitational against the Providence Friars, according to CBSSports' Jon Rothstein. The Badgers are part of a four-team field at the 2025 'Feast Week' event in San Diego, California, along with Providence, TCU and defending national champion Florida. The tournament will take place on Nov. 27 and 28, with the semifinal games on the 27th and the championship and third place game on the 28th. Wisconsin will face a Providence team that went 12-20 (6-14 Big East) in 2024-25 and finished ranked No. 96 in KenPom. The program has struggled in its first two years under Kim English, following an impressive 12-year run under Ed Cooley. However, CBSSports believes it could be primed for a resurgent 2025-26 campaign after a transfer-heavy offseason. The Badgers' matchups against Providence and either TCU or Florida, depending on the semifinal results, add to a loaded nonconference schedule. The team will begin with an exhibition against Oklahoma in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in late October. It will then travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, in mid-November for a high-profile rematch against BYU, a projected national title contender entering the season. That game precedes the Rady Children's Invitational, as well as the annual matchup against in-state rival Marquette (date is to-be-determined) and a mid-December contest against Villanova at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Wisconsin's full nonconference schedule has yet to be finalized. But the team already has five high-profile contests, not including the exhibition against the Sooners. Wisconsin's new-look starting lineup, led by returning starters John Blackwell and Nolan Winter, plus high-profile transfer additions Nick Boyd, Andrew Rohde and Austin Rapp, will be tested from the first game of the season. The team's nonconference schedule should accurately preview what to expect when Big Ten play picks up in January 2026. If the team performs against the listed gauntlet nonconference slate like it did against then-No. 9 Arizona to start the 2024-25 season, a win that was led by a dominant 41 points from future All-American wing John Tonje, Badgers fans could brace for a special season. AI 171 lone survivor discharged, performs last rites of his brother
Ahmedabad: Viswashkumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the recent Air India 171 plane crash in which all the other 241 people on board were killed, performed the last rites of his younger brother Ajay at their ancestral Bucharwada village in the Diu Union territory. Life's irony and agony were writ large on Viswash's bandaged face as he, whose survival left the world awestruck, processed the death of his younger brother seated in the same row on the ill-fated flight. Viswash, a 40-year-old businessman from Leicester, was seated in seat 11A while Ajay occupied seat number 11J. By a miracle that reiterated belief in Providence, Viswash was the only passenger to walk out alive from the crash site, even as his brother was burnt to death in the plane inferno. The video of him stumbling out of residential hostel gates, even as fire raged behind him, went viral internationally since June 12. Villagers present at the cremation ceremony said that Viswash shouldered his brother's bier on his final journey and broke down multiple times. Viswash's father, Ramesh Bhalia, lit Ajay's pyre, even though the whole family remained present in grief, bidding farewell to the departed soul. "Viswash, along with the father, broke down multiple times during the final rites. Rameshbhai had four sons. Even as the family could not thank God enough for Viswash's miraculous survival, they were heartbroken at losing Ajay," said a relative of the Bhalia family. "Despite his own grief, he was seen comforting other relatives at the cremation," the relative added. A family member, Dhiru Soma, said that Viswash is deeply shaken and has not been able to accept the loss. "He is not relieved to have survived. He feels more pain over his brother's death," he said. "Viswash, including his parents and two brothers, travelled to Gujarat after the crash. His entire family was present in the funeral procession, which was taken out from Patelwadi to Koli Samaj crematorium," sarpanch Dipak Devjibai said. Before leaving the hospital, Viswash was questioned by a team from the city crime branch about the crash and his experience during the incident. Officials are looking into survivor accounts as part of the investigation. According to a family source, many relatives and community members wore white caps during the condolence gathering. The family belongs to the Koli Patel community. Prayers were offered for the departed, and they expressed gratitude for Viswash's survival. Relatives said that Viswash is under extreme mental stress and is struggling to speak or express himself. The family continues to support him as he deals with the emotional aftermath of the crash.

Outlander fans decipher episode titles ahead of Blood of My Blood premiere
The Outlander prequel series airs in August Outlander fans have been buzzing with speculation about the prequel series Blood of My Blood after Starz's official Instagram account released a post revealing the episode titles for the drama, reports the Scottish Daily Express. The post showcased a slide show featuring the episode number and the name of each instalment: Episode 101 - Providence, Episode 102 - S. W.A. K. (Sealed with a kiss), Episode 103 - School of the Moon, Episode 104 - A Soldier's Heart, Episode 105 - Needfire, Episode 106 - Birthright, Episode 107 - Luceo non uro, Episode 108 - A Virtuous Woman, Episode 109 - Braemar, Episode 110 - Something Borrowed. Alongside the image carousel, the account posted: "What do these #BloodofMyBlood episode titles mean? You'll find out starting August 8. Until then, drop your theories below..." Many fans took up the challenge and shared their theories in the comments section, with one person posting: "I'm intrigued by them all but episode 107, Luceo Non Uro- the Mackenzie motto- "I Shine, Not Burn", makes me think of Outlander episode 104, The Gathering." While another echoed their sentiments: "you took the words right out of my mouth! [sic]." The episode title could also hint at Ellen MacKenzie's (played by Harriet Slater) defiance against her brothers' wishes to marry her off for the sake of the clan. A third chimed in with: "Ooooohhh, ep 10sounds like wedding time [sic]," hinting at the possibility of either Jamie Roy's character Brian Fraser and Ellen's big day or perhaps the matrimony of Jeremy Irvine's Henry Beauchamp and Hermione Corfield's Julia Moriston. One eagle-eyed viewer remarked on the familiar title 'Providence' from an earlier Outlander episode: " title from s4 episode 12. "Brianna confronted Bonnet, Roger tried to escape the Mohawk, but returned to show mercy to Fr Alexandre" a comment which implies potential plot parallels between the new series Blood of My Blood and its progenitor due to their shared title. Another person referenced the deeper meaning behind the episode name: "Providence is the quiet hand of God moving hearts toward one another, aligning time, place, and healing in such a way that love arrives exactly when both are ready." As another put it: "the protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power. "they found their trust in divine providence to be a source of comfort" this is the definition I found. I think it's fitting! I can't wait to see the series! [sic]." Delving into the nuances of S. W.A. K., a fan expressed: "Episode 3 is the only title that makes me think about Claire's parents. Rest do sound more like about Jamie's parents," musing over the wartime love story conveyed through letters between characters Henry and Julia. On Reddit, discussions around episode nine spurred further theories, with one user pointing out: "Braemar - place where Jacobite rising 1715 started!". Meanwhile, another fan shared a snippet from Wikipedia about the Jacobite Rising of 1715, hinting that this could be a significant event in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. At present, these are merely theories, but they align with what Outlander fans already know about Brian and Ellen, as well as Henry and Julia's respective histories.
