Perth teen's courageous cancer journey honoured
A Perth teen's health battle was recognised at last weekend's Perth Super 440. V8 SuperUtes driver Jimmy Vernon paid tribute to 16-year-old Rinaldo Osborne from Darch by displaying his name and photo on his helmet. Over the past 18 months, Rinaldo has been undergoing treatment for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at Perth Children's Hospital. Your local paper, whenever you want it. At the Wanneroo Raceway, Rinaldo and his family were given a special behind-the-scenes pit tour, met the drivers, and got to sit inside Vernon's race car. Rinaldo, who enjoys golf, fishing, swimming and photography in his spare time, said the experience was incredibly special. 'Meeting Jimmy on Saturday was an unforgettable honour; his story shows that anything is possible with passion and hard work, which inspires me with my journey and goals,' Rinaldo said. 'I'm so grateful to him and the Kids with Cancer Foundation for the chance to share my journey and see my name and photo on his helmet; a day I'll never forget.' Vernon has been an ambassador for the Kids with Cancer Foundation since 2020, dedicating each of his races to a child diagnosed with cancer. In November 2024, a $450,000 three-year funding commitment was made by Kids with Cancer Foundation to Perth Children's Hospital Foundation to support pioneering immunology research, which could lead to a vaccine to help beat childhood cancer. After weeks of persistent illness with little improvement despite several visits to the GP, in December 2023 Rinaldo was rushed to Perth Children's Hospital where he underwent urgent tests and received his diagnosis. Over the next several months, Rinaldo courageously endured multiple rounds of intensive chemotherapy, battling complications including blood clots, severe infections, headaches and frequent hospital stays. After suffering a seizure in April 2024, Rinaldo was placed in an induced coma and faced a challenging physical recovery, but with determination and physiotherapy he gradually regained his strength and mobility. Credit: Supplied He missed much of Year 10 but is now back at school full-time and busy with his Year 11 studies. His father Wayne described him as a respectful, gentle young man who wants to join the Royal Australian Navy one day. Mr Osborne said despite the trauma of the journey, Rinaldo had remained resilient, brave and kind throughout it all, and their family was forever grateful for the 'incredible support' they had received. 'Rinaldo lives each day to the fullest, stays focused on his dreams, and never lets go of hope. His courage lights the way not just for our family but for many others facing similar battles,' he said. 'He reminds us that no matter how hard the fight, anything is possible with heart, faith, and determination.'

Australia's Broc Feeney turned the tables on his young New Zealand title rival Matt Payne to win Sunday's feature race at the Perth Super 440 and extend his lead in the 2025 Supercars championship. Four weeks after Payne held off Feeney in a drag finish to the chequered flag to win at Symmons Plains in Tasmania, the pair traded places after an incredible finish to the 200km main race at Wanneroo Raceway. This time, the 22-year-old Feeney got his Chevrolet Camaro across the line first by half a second to remain on track to become the second youngest driver to win the Supercars title. There's still a long way to go, of course, and with a new format in place this season, no-one is taking anything for granted but so far, Feeney has established himself as the one to beat. Picture: Getty 'It was probably going to be pretty smooth sailing home (but) with the pit stops and the safety car and Matt was super quick at the end there. 'I was a bit worried in the sprint shoot out at the end. He got one off on me last one so it's good to get one back on him this time.' Following on from his victory in Saturday's second 120km sprint, Feeney has already won five races this season to stretch his lead in the championship standings to 72 points over his Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Will Brown. Payne, a 22-year-old rising Kiwi star, is currently in third spot, 123 behind Feeney. Starting from pole position, Feeney made a brilliant launch when the lights went out to take immediate control of the 16th race of the season. The only times he relinquished the lead in the 83-lap event was when he made his two mandatory pit stops but the introduction of a safety car, when Cooper Murray came to a halt because of a mechanical problem, set the stage for a nail biting 14-lap sprint to the end. Picture: Getty The lead that Feeney had built up was instantly wiped away as the field came together for the hectic dash to the finish, but he held his nerve to seal the win and celebrate in style. 'I didn't have much left in the end. My rears were pretty cooked,' Feeney said. 'I finally did a good burnout, so hopefully it was all right for the crowd. I was practising with the (NRL) Bulldogs earlier this week, doing burnouts on grass, so it was good to finally let one rip.' Payne got a lucky break when the race was yellow flagged because it enabled him to make a cheap pit stop and jump to second spot. 'I'd never given up, absolutely not. When I saw the car that was stopped down at turn six, I thought, oh my God, we've actually got a real chance. And then I came out and I was behind Broc and I thought no way we're in second,' Payne said. Feeney extended his championship lead with the win. 'I just wanted to keep pounding Broc there at the end. I was trying everything I could. but we just didn't quite have the car underneath us. 'We stayed close, but we fought right to the end, but I'm just really happy to be standing on the podium.' A tearful James Courtney also benefited from the safety car to finish third and secure his first podium in two years. 'I'm not going to lie, I did cry on the in-lap,' Courtney said. 'It's been a tough 18 months for these guys putting in so much work and to be able to finally repay them with the results has been amazing.' V8 Supercars: Supercars sophomore Ryan Wood claims maiden win at Perth Super 440, Brodie Kostecki improves
Supercars sophomore Ryan Wood has sparked emotional celebrations with his maiden race victory as local boy Brodie Kostecki showed signs he may be able to steal his first win of the year in Perth. Australia's premier motorsport championship made a well-behaved start to the Perth Super 440 at Raceway in Wanneroo, with not a single flag flown or safety car deployed. Wood barely put a foot wrong after starting second on the grid, capturing the lead 10 laps in before fending off a roaring finish from reigning champion Will Brown in the final five laps to salute in front of the West Australian faithful. Kostecki fell two places from his third-place start but showed major improvements after only managing 18th fastest in practice on Friday, a huge boost to his hopes across the weekend. Wood made the most of the outside line off the starting grid but was outmaneuvered into the first turn as pole-sitter Chaz Mostert held onto the lead. Kostecki left too much room for championship leader Broc Feeney on the inside to slip out of the podium places off the line. It forced the Perth boy to settle in behind him, and he steadily lost time in the dirty air while also fending off Will Brown and Matt Payne as they battled behind him. Mostert's lead evaporated on lap ten of 50, Wood side-by-side with him on the inside through turn seven before making the most of a better exit to capture the lead through turn one. Feeney was the first to pull the trigger on a pit stop, taking two new tyres in an impressive 3.6-second change on lap 22 and forcing Wood to react. The move worked perfectly for Feeney, Wood's rear tyres forcing a slow stop to leave the young gun on the race leader's bumper after his rejoin. The call to leave Mostert out past the halfway mark cost the Mobil1 driver; a slow pit stop dumping him out behind Kostecki in fifth. However, it was the best possible result for the fans as Mostert and the hometown hero renewed hostilities, going bumper-to-bumper and crisscrossing into and out of turns seven and one. In the end, Mostert's new set of tyres made the difference, Kostecki unable to win his spot back a second time. Red Bull teammates Feeney and Will Brown rubbed shoulders as the race reached the pointy end. And the reigning champion was given the green light to race Feeney, grabbing second with 12 laps to go before making a run at Wood that came up narrowly short.
